🔧 CR-V - Power Steering Pump Replacement

Your CR-V does not have a power steering pump to replace. It uses Electric Power Steering, called EPS, which uses an electric motor instead of power steering fluid and a hydraulic pump.

If the steering is hard, noisy, or the steering warning light is on, the correct repair is EPS diagnosis, not pump replacement.

  • ⚠️ Do not add power steering fluid. Your CR-V has no power steering fluid reservoir.
  • ⚠️ Do not remove a “power steering pump” from the belt area. There is no belt-driven pump on this system.
  • ⚠️ Keep hands clear of steering linkage while the vehicle is powered on.
  • ⚠️ A weak 12-volt battery can cause EPS warning lights and heavy steering.
  • ⚠️ Disconnect the 12-volt battery before unplugging steering electrical connectors.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Confirm the System Type

  • Use a flashlight and look around the engine belt area.
  • Your CR-V will not have a hydraulic power steering pump, pump pulley, fluid reservoir, or power steering hoses.
  • This confirms there is no pump replacement procedure for your CR-V.
  • No fluid, no pump, no belt service.

Step 2: Inspect the Battery Terminals

  • Put on safety glasses and mechanic gloves.
  • Use a 10mm socket and ratchet 3/8-inch drive to check that the battery terminal clamps are snug.
  • If corrosion is present, loosen the negative terminal first with the 10mm socket.
  • Use a battery terminal brush to clean the battery post and cable clamp.
  • Reconnect the terminal and tighten with the 10mm socket.
  • Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).

Step 3: Check Battery Voltage

  • Use a digital multimeter set to DC volts.
  • Touch the red lead to the positive battery post and the black lead to the negative battery post.
  • With the engine off, a healthy battery should be around 12.6 volts.
  • Start the engine and check again. Charging voltage should usually be about 13.5-14.8 volts.
  • If voltage is low, repair the battery or charging issue before replacing steering parts.

Step 4: Scan the Electric Power Steering System

  • Use an OBD-II scan tool with Honda EPS capability (specialty).
  • Plug it into the diagnostic port under the driver side dashboard.
  • Select Honda > CR-V > Electric Power Steering / EPS > Read Codes.
  • Write down all EPS codes before clearing them.
  • Do not clear codes yet. Codes are clues that point to the failed circuit or component.

Step 5: Inspect EPS Wiring and Connectors

  • Turn the ignition off.
  • If a lower dash panel blocks access, use a trim clip removal tool to gently release the clips.
  • Use a flashlight to inspect wiring near the steering column and under-dash area.
  • Look for loose connectors, damaged wires, water marks, or rodent damage.
  • If you must unplug an EPS connector, disconnect the negative battery terminal first using a 10mm socket.

Step 6: Match the Repair to the Fault

  • If the scan tool shows low-voltage or power-supply faults, fix the battery, terminals, grounds, or charging system first.
  • If the scan tool shows steering torque sensor, EPS motor, or internal rack faults, the electric power steering rack may need replacement.
  • If there are no EPS codes but steering feels stiff, inspect tires, front suspension, tie rod ends, and strut mounts before replacing EPS parts.
  • Use the OBD-II scan tool with Honda EPS capability (specialty) after any EPS component replacement to perform required calibration.

Step 7: Clear Codes After the Correct Repair

  • Use the OBD-II scan tool with Honda EPS capability (specialty).
  • Select Honda > CR-V > Electric Power Steering / EPS > Clear Codes.
  • Start the engine.
  • Turn the steering wheel slowly left and right while parked to verify smooth assist.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Confirm the EPS warning light stays off.
  • ✅ Test drive slowly in a safe open area first.
  • ✅ Make sure steering assist feels even left and right.
  • ✅ If the steering rack was replaced, perform EPS calibration with a Honda-capable scan tool.
  • ✅ If the steering wheel is off-center, get a four-wheel alignment.
