📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Tucson on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Let the engine cool completely. Hot coolant and oil can burn you badly.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket.
  • Use a floor jack rated 3-ton minimum and jack stands rated 3-ton minimum if raising the vehicle.
  • An engine support bar is a tool that holds the engine from above when an engine mount is removed.
  • A harmonic balancer puller is a specialty puller used to remove the crankshaft pulley without damaging it.
  • If your goal was normal maintenance, stop here: your Tucson does not have a serviceable timing belt interval.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Confirm the timing chain repair is needed

  • Use a scan tool to check for camshaft/crankshaft timing codes such as P0016, P0017, P0018, or P0019.
  • Listen for a sharp rattle from the front of the engine during cold start.
  • If there are no symptoms or codes, do not replace the timing chain as maintenance.
  • Timing chains are not routine service parts.

Step 2: Disconnect the battery

  • Use a 10mm socket to loosen the negative battery terminal nut.
  • Move the negative cable away from the battery post so it cannot spring back.

Step 3: Raise and support the front of the vehicle

  • Use a floor jack rated 3-ton minimum at the front center jacking point.
  • Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the proper front support points.
  • Gently lower your Tucson onto the stands and shake the vehicle lightly to confirm it is stable.

Step 4: Remove lower shields and right splash shield

  • Use a 10mm socket and plastic trim clip remover to remove the lower engine shield fasteners and clips.
  • Remove the right front inner splash shield for access to the crankshaft pulley.

Step 5: Drain engine oil and coolant as needed

  • Place a drain pan 10-quart minimum under the engine.
  • Use a 17mm socket to remove the engine oil drain plug.
  • Use a 3/8-inch torque wrench when reinstalling the oil drain plug and Torque to 35-45 Nm (26-33 ft-lbs).
  • Drain coolant only if front cover components or hoses require removal.

Step 6: Remove the serpentine belt

  • Use a serpentine belt tool to rotate the belt tensioner and relieve belt tension.
  • Slide the belt off the pulleys and note the routing before removal.
  • Take a photo before removing the belt.

Step 7: Support the engine

  • Install the engine support bar across the upper body structure.
  • Attach the support hook to a safe engine lifting point.
  • Apply light tension only. Do not lift the engine hard.

Step 8: Remove the right engine mount

  • Use a 14mm socket and 17mm socket to remove the right engine mount fasteners.
  • Keep the bolts organized by location because lengths may differ.
  • On reassembly, use a 1/2-inch torque wrench and tighten engine mount fasteners to the factory specification for your exact bolt location.

Step 9: Remove the crankshaft pulley

  • Use a 22mm socket with a 1/2-inch breaker bar to loosen the crankshaft pulley bolt.
  • Use a harmonic balancer puller (specialty) to remove the pulley from the crankshaft.
  • Do not pry against the timing cover. It can crack or bend.

Step 10: Remove the valve cover

  • Use a 10mm socket to remove ignition coil fasteners and valve cover bolts.
  • Lift the valve cover carefully so the sealing surface is not scratched.
  • Use a gasket scraper plastic to remove old gasket material.

Step 11: Remove the front timing cover

  • Use a 10mm socket, 12mm socket, and 14mm socket to remove front cover bolts.
  • Note bolt locations carefully because timing cover bolts can be different lengths.
  • Separate the cover gently. Do not gouge the aluminum mating surfaces.

Step 12: Set the engine to Top Dead Center

  • Top Dead Center means cylinder 1 is at the top of its compression stroke and the timing marks line up.
  • Use a 22mm socket on the crankshaft bolt area to rotate the engine clockwise only.
  • Align the crankshaft and camshaft timing marks before removing the chain.
  • Do not rotate the crankshaft or camshafts independently once the chain is removed.

Step 13: Remove the timing chain tensioner, guides, and chain

  • Use a 10mm socket and 12mm socket to remove the timing chain guide and tensioner bolts.
  • Remove the timing chain only after confirming all timing marks are aligned.
  • Compare the old chain and new chain before installation.

Step 14: Install the new timing chain kit

  • Install the new guides using a 10mm socket or 12mm socket as required.
  • Install the chain with colored links aligned to the camshaft and crankshaft timing marks.
  • Install the new tensioner and release it only after all guides and chain marks are correctly positioned.
  • Use a 3/8-inch torque wrench and tighten timing guide and tensioner bolts to the factory specification for the exact bolt size.

Step 15: Rotate the engine by hand

  • Use a 22mm socket and 1/2-inch breaker bar to rotate the crankshaft clockwise two full turns.
  • Stop immediately if you feel hard resistance.
  • Recheck that the timing marks return to their correct positions.

Step 16: Reinstall the timing cover

  • Use a gasket scraper plastic and shop towels to clean the sealing surfaces.
  • Apply front timing cover sealant in the correct bead pattern.
  • Install the cover within the sealant working time.
  • Use a 10mm socket, 12mm socket, and 14mm socket to install bolts by hand first.
  • Use a 3/8-inch torque wrench and tighten cover bolts in stages to the factory specification for each bolt size.

Step 17: Reinstall crankshaft pulley and engine mount

  • Install the crankshaft pulley by hand, then install the center bolt using a 22mm socket.
  • Use a 1/2-inch torque wrench and tighten the crankshaft pulley bolt to the factory specification.
  • Reinstall the right engine mount using a 14mm socket and 17mm socket.
  • Use a 1/2-inch torque wrench and tighten engine mount fasteners to the factory specification for each fastener location.

Step 18: Reinstall valve cover and serpentine belt

  • Install the new valve cover gasket.
  • Use a 10mm socket to reinstall the valve cover bolts.
  • Use a 3/8-inch torque wrench and tighten valve cover bolts evenly to the factory specification.
  • Use a serpentine belt tool to route the new belt over the pulleys.

Step 19: Refill fluids and reconnect battery

  • Install the oil drain plug using a 17mm socket.
  • Refill the engine with 5W-20 synthetic engine oil.
  • Refill coolant if it was drained.
  • Use a 10mm socket to reconnect the negative battery cable.

Step 20: Start and inspect

  • Start the engine and let it idle.
  • Watch for oil leaks, coolant leaks, warning lights, or abnormal rattling.
  • Shut the engine off immediately if the engine runs rough or makes loud mechanical noise.

  • Check engine oil level after the first warm-up and top off if needed.
  • Check coolant level after the engine cools completely.
  • Use a scan tool to clear any timing-related codes only after confirming proper operation.
