📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Civic on level ground, set the parking brake, and let the engine cool fully.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket.
  • Raise the front of the vehicle with a floor jack rated 2-ton minimum and support it with jack stands rated 2-ton minimum.
  • A timing chain keeps the crankshaft and camshafts synchronized so the valves and pistons move at the right time.
  • If you only meant the outside accessory belt, that is the serpentine belt, not the timing belt.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Confirm the Service Needed

  • Use a flashlight to inspect the front of the engine.
  • Your Civic does not have a rubber timing belt to replace.
  • Only continue if you are servicing the internal timing chain, tensioner, guides, or front timing cover.
  • No timing belt exists on this engine.

Step 2: Disconnect the Battery

  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to loosen the negative battery terminal.
  • Remove the negative cable and position it away from the battery post.

Step 3: Raise and Support the Vehicle

  • Use a floor jack rated 2-ton minimum to lift the front of your Civic at the approved front jacking point.
  • Place jack stands rated 2-ton minimum under the approved support points.
  • Gently lower the vehicle onto the stands and shake the vehicle lightly to confirm it is stable.

Step 4: Remove Splash Shields and Access Covers

  • Use a trim clip remover to remove plastic clips from the lower splash shield.
  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove shield bolts.
  • Set the splash shield aside.

Step 5: Remove the Serpentine Belt

  • Use the serpentine belt tool with 14mm adapter to rotate the belt tensioner and release tension.
  • Slide the belt off one smooth pulley, then slowly release the tensioner.
  • Remove the belt from the remaining pulleys by hand.
  • Take a routing photo first.

Step 6: Support the Engine

  • Install the engine support bar across the upper body structure as directed by the tool instructions.
  • Apply light upward support to the engine.
  • Use a floor jack rated 2-ton minimum with a wood block under the oil pan only as backup support, not as the main support.

Step 7: Remove Engine Mount Components

  • Use 14mm socket, 17mm socket, and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the passenger-side engine mount brackets blocking the timing cover.
  • Keep bolts organized by location.
  • Reinstallation torque varies by mount fastener location, so use service data for the exact bolt position.

Step 8: Remove the Crankshaft Pulley Bolt

  • Install the Honda crankshaft pulley holder tool into the crank pulley.
  • Use a 19mm socket with a 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen the crankshaft pulley bolt.
  • The bolt is very tight. Keep the tool square so it does not slip.
  • Remove the crankshaft pulley after the bolt is removed.

Step 9: Remove Valve Cover and Timing Cover

  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove valve cover bolts.
  • Lift the valve cover off carefully.
  • Use 10mm socket, 12mm socket, and 14mm socket to remove timing cover bolts.
  • Use a plastic scraper to gently separate the cover. Do not gouge the aluminum sealing surface.

Step 10: Set Engine to Top Dead Center

  • Use a 19mm socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar on the crankshaft bolt area to rotate the engine clockwise only.
  • Align the crankshaft and camshaft timing marks to their correct top dead center positions.
  • Use a paint marker to mark the chain and sprocket locations before removal.
  • Top dead center means cylinder 1 is at the top of its compression stroke.

Step 11: Remove Chain Tensioner, Guides, and Chain

  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the timing chain tensioner bolts.
  • Use a 10mm socket or 12mm socket as needed to remove timing chain guide bolts.
  • Remove the chain carefully without turning the crankshaft or camshafts.
  • If any shaft moves, stop and realign timing marks before continuing.

Step 12: Install New Timing Chain Components

  • Install the new timing chain guides using a 10mm socket or 12mm socket.
  • Route the new timing chain kit over the crankshaft and camshaft sprockets with the timing marks aligned.
  • Install the new timing chain tensioner using a 10mm socket.
  • Release the tensioner only after the chain is fully seated and all timing marks are aligned.
  • Torque timing chain guide/tensioner bolts to OEM specification for the exact bolt location.

Step 13: Verify Timing by Hand

  • Use a 19mm socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to rotate the crankshaft clockwise two full turns.
  • Stop if you feel hard resistance. Do not force it.
  • After two turns, recheck that the timing marks return to their correct positions.
  • Hand-turning prevents costly mistakes.

Step 14: Clean and Reseal the Timing Cover

  • Use a plastic scraper and gasket scraper to clean old sealant from the timing cover and engine block.
  • Install the new front crankshaft seal.
  • Apply timing cover sealant in the correct bead pattern around the cover sealing surface.
  • Install the timing cover before the sealant skins over.
  • Torque timing cover bolts to OEM specification by bolt size and location.

Step 15: Reinstall Valve Cover

  • Install the new valve cover gasket set into the valve cover.
  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive torque wrench to tighten valve cover bolts evenly.
  • Torque valve cover bolts to OEM specification.

Step 16: Reinstall Crankshaft Pulley and Engine Mount

  • Install the crankshaft pulley by hand.
  • Use the Honda crankshaft pulley holder tool, 19mm socket, and 1/2-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the crankshaft pulley bolt.
  • Torque crankshaft pulley bolt to OEM specification.
  • Use 14mm socket, 17mm socket, and 3/8-inch drive torque wrench to reinstall engine mount components.
  • Torque engine mount bolts to OEM specification for each bolt location.

Step 17: Reinstall Serpentine Belt and Covers

  • Use the serpentine belt tool with 14mm adapter to move the tensioner and reinstall the serpentine belt.
  • Use a flashlight to confirm the belt ribs are fully seated in every pulley groove.
  • Use a 10mm socket and trim clip remover to reinstall the lower splash shield and covers.

Step 18: Reconnect Battery and Refill Fluids

  • Use a 10mm socket to reconnect the negative battery cable.
  • Check and top off engine oil if any was drained or lost.
  • Check and top off engine coolant if any coolant hoses or components were disturbed.

  • Before starting, verify all tools are removed from the engine bay.
  • Start your Civic and listen for abnormal rattling, knocking, or scraping.
  • Let the engine idle while checking around the timing cover for oil leaks.
  • Watch the serpentine belt from a safe distance to confirm it runs straight.
  • If the check engine light comes on, scan for codes before driving.
