📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
- Let the engine cool completely.
- Locate the coolant reservoir (also called the degas bottle—it’s the plastic tank where you add coolant).
- Set your drain pan under the front of the car before you loosen any hoses.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Depressurize the cooling system
- Slowly loosen the coolant reservoir cap by hand (only when cold), then remove it fully.
Step 2: Raise the front (for the lower hose)
- Use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift the front of your Focus at the correct front jacking point.
- Place jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) and lower the car onto them.
Step 3: Remove the lower splash shield (if equipped)
- Use a 7mm socket with a 1/4" ratchet and 3" extension to remove the small screws.
- If your screws are 8mm, use an 8mm socket instead.
- Use a trim clip tool (specialty) to pop any plastic clips without breaking them.
Step 4: Drain enough coolant for a hose swap
- Position the drain pan (at least 2-gallon) under the lower radiator area.
- If your radiator has a drain cock (small plastic drain valve), open it carefully by hand or with a flat-blade screwdriver if needed.
- If there is no drain cock (or it’s stuck), you can drain by loosening the lower hose clamp instead (next step). Expect a fast spill.
Step 5: Remove the lower radiator hose
- Use hose clamp pliers (specialty) to compress the spring clamp and slide it back on the hose.
- Twist the hose by hand to break it loose from the fitting.
- If it’s stuck, use a pick tool (small) (specialty) to gently lift the hose edge to let air in, then twist again.
- Pull the hose off and aim it into the drain pan.
Step 6: Remove the upper radiator hose
- From the top of the engine bay, place the drain pan under the front of the engine area (coolant will still drip).
- Use hose clamp pliers (specialty) to move the spring clamps back from each end of the upper hose.
- Twist the hose to free it, then pull it off both fittings.
Step 7: Prep the fittings and compare parts
- Use shop towels to wipe the radiator neck and engine-side fittings clean.
- Compare the new hose to the old hose for matching bends and end shapes.
- If your spring clamps feel weak or rusty, replace them. Good clamps prevent comebacks.
Step 8: Install the new hoses
- Slide the clamps onto the new hose first.
- Push the hose fully onto each fitting until it seats against the stop/bead.
- Use hose clamp pliers (specialty) to position the spring clamp in the same spot as original (behind the raised bead on the fitting).
- If you are using screw-type clamps instead of spring clamps, tighten with a flat-blade screwdriver or the correct socket and stop when snug; do not crush the plastic radiator neck.
Step 9: Reinstall the splash shield and lower the car
- Reinstall the shield using the 7mm socket (or 8mm socket as needed) and any clips with the trim clip tool (specialty).
- Use the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift slightly, remove jack stands, then lower the car.
Step 10: Refill coolant and bleed air
- Mix coolant 50/50: use Motorcraft Orange concentrate with distilled water (unless you bought pre-mix).
- Use a funnel to fill the coolant reservoir to the MAX line.
- Start the engine and set the heater to HOT (this opens the heater circuit).
- Let it idle until the temperature gauge reaches normal operating range; watch for leaks.
- Shut the engine off, let it cool, then recheck and top off to MAX.
✅ After Repair
- Check for leaks at both ends of each hose while the engine is running and after a test drive.
- Verify the heater blows hot air (a sign coolant is circulating).
- Recheck coolant level the next morning when fully cold; top off if needed.
- Dispose of old coolant properly at a recycling center or parts store that accepts fluids.
