  • 🔋 Use a 10mm socket to disconnect the negative battery cable. Move it aside so it cannot touch the battery post.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise the Front of the Vehicle

  • Use a floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift the front of your CX-5 at the front center jacking point.
  • Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the front side pinch welds.
  • Lower the vehicle gently onto the jack stands.
  • Use wheel chocks to keep the rear wheels from moving.
  • Never work under only a jack.

Step 2: Remove the Lower Engine Cover

  • Use an 8mm socket to remove the lower splash shield bolts.
  • Use a trim clip removal tool to remove the plastic push clips.
  • Set the lower engine cover aside.
  • Keep the clips and bolts grouped together.

Step 3: Remove the Right Front Wheel and Inner Shield Access

  • Use a 21mm lug wrench or socket if available to loosen the right front wheel lug nuts before lifting, if the wheel is still installed.
  • Use the floor jack and jack stands if not already raised.
  • Remove the right front wheel.
  • Use an 8mm socket and trim clip removal tool to loosen the front section of the right inner fender liner.
  • Pull the liner back enough to access the belt and pulley area.

Step 4: Drain the Coolant

  • Place a drain pan 2-gallon minimum under the radiator drain area.
  • Slowly remove the coolant reservoir cap by hand only after the engine is fully cool.
  • Use pliers or your hand, depending on access, to open the radiator drain plug.
  • Allow the coolant to drain fully into the pan.
  • If needed, use a flat-blade screwdriver carefully on the drain plug, but do not force it.
  • Coolant is poisonous. Clean spills fast.

Step 5: Remove the Accessory Drive Belt

  • Draw the belt routing on paper or take a clear photo with your phone.
  • Use a serpentine belt tool on the belt tensioner. The tensioner is a spring-loaded arm that keeps the belt tight.
  • Rotate the tensioner to release belt tension.
  • Slide the belt off the pulleys by hand.
  • Slowly release the tensioner with the serpentine belt tool.
  • Inspect the old belt. Replace it now if cracked, glazed, oil-soaked, or noisy.

Step 6: Remove Components Blocking Water Pump Access

  • Use a 10mm socket to remove any small brackets, harness clips, or splash shields blocking the water pump area.
  • Use pliers to release hose clamps if a coolant hose blocks access.
  • Twist the hose gently by hand before pulling it off. This helps break the seal without tearing the hose.
  • Use shop towels to catch leftover coolant.
  • Label hoses before removal.

Step 7: Remove the Water Pump Pulley if Equipped

  • If the pulley blocks the pump bolts, use a 10mm socket to loosen the pulley bolts.
  • If the pulley spins, hold it carefully with a gloved hand or use the belt briefly for resistance before fully removing the belt.
  • Remove the pulley bolts with the 10mm socket.
  • Remove the pulley by hand and set it aside.
  • On installation, tighten water pump pulley bolts evenly to Torque to 8-10 Nm (71-89 in-lbs).

Step 8: Remove the Old Water Pump

  • Place the drain pan under the pump area because more coolant will spill.
  • Use a 10mm socket or 12mm socket, depending on bolt location, to remove the water pump mounting bolts.
  • Note the position of any different-length bolts.
  • Gently tap the pump body by hand or with a plastic-handled tool if it is stuck.
  • Remove the old water pump from the engine.
  • Do not pry hard against the aluminum engine surface.

Step 9: Clean the Sealing Surface

  • Use a plastic gasket scraper to clean the engine-side sealing surface.
  • Use shop towels to wipe away old coolant and gasket residue.
  • Do not use a metal scraper because it can scratch the aluminum and cause leaks.
  • Make sure no old gasket material falls into the coolant passage.
  • Clean surface equals good seal.

Step 10: Install the New Water Pump

  • Install the new water pump gasket or O-ring onto the new water pump.
  • If the gasket design requires it, hold it in place with a very light film of clean coolant. Do not use sealant unless the replacement pump instructions specifically require it.
  • Position the new water pump against the engine by hand.
  • Start all bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a 10mm socket or 12mm socket to snug the bolts evenly in a crisscross pattern.
  • Use a torque wrench to tighten the water pump bolts to Torque to 19-25 Nm (14-18 ft-lbs).

Step 11: Reinstall the Pulley, Hoses, and Brackets

  • Use a 10mm socket to reinstall the water pump pulley if removed.
  • Tighten pulley bolts evenly to Torque to 8-10 Nm (71-89 in-lbs).
  • Use hose clamp pliers to reinstall coolant hoses and clamps in their original positions.
  • Use a 10mm socket to reinstall any brackets or harness retainers removed earlier.
  • Make sure hoses are fully seated past the raised lip on each fitting.

Step 12: Install the Accessory Drive Belt

  • Route the belt around the pulleys using your photo or belt routing diagram.
  • Use the serpentine belt tool to rotate the tensioner.
  • Slide the belt onto the final pulley by hand.
  • Slowly release the tensioner with the serpentine belt tool.
  • Check that the belt ribs sit fully inside every pulley groove.
  • Misrouted belts can shred quickly.

Step 13: Reinstall the Fender Liner and Lower Cover

  • Use the trim clip removal tool by hand to reinstall the inner fender liner clips.
  • Use an 8mm socket to reinstall the inner liner screws.
  • Use an 8mm socket to reinstall the lower engine cover bolts.
  • Reinstall all plastic clips by pressing them in by hand.

Step 14: Reinstall the Wheel and Lower the Vehicle

  • Install the right front wheel by hand-starting all lug nuts.
  • Use a 21mm lug wrench or socket if available to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.
  • Use the floor jack to raise the vehicle slightly and remove the jack stands.
  • Lower your CX-5 to the ground.
  • Use a torque wrench to tighten the wheel lug nuts to Torque to 108-147 Nm (80-108 ft-lbs).

Step 15: Refill the Cooling System

  • Close the radiator drain plug by hand, then snug it gently. Do not overtighten plastic drain parts.
  • Install a cooling system spill-free funnel kit on the coolant reservoir or radiator fill point, depending on access.
  • Use a funnel with narrow spout to add Mazda-compatible FL22 premixed engine coolant slowly.
  • Fill until the coolant level reaches the proper mark.
  • Squeeze the upper radiator hose by hand several times to help move air out.

Step 16: Bleed Air from the Cooling System

  • Reconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket.
  • Start the engine and set the climate control to maximum heat and low fan speed.
  • Let the engine idle while watching the coolant level in the spill-free funnel.
  • Add coolant as the level drops.
  • Watch for steady heat from the vents. This helps confirm coolant is moving through the heater core.
  • Allow the engine to reach normal operating temperature.
  • Check for leaks around the water pump, hoses, and drain plug using a flashlight.
  • When air bubbles stop, shut the engine off and allow it to cool.
  • Remove the spill-free funnel kit and install the cap securely by hand.

  • ✅ Recheck the coolant level after the engine cools completely. Top off to the correct mark if needed.
