🔧 RAV4 - Engine Water Pump Replacement

This repair replaces the engine coolant water pump on your RAV4. The water pump moves coolant through the gasoline engine to prevent overheating, and replacement is usually needed if it leaks, makes bearing noise, or causes cooling system faults.

Assumption: This procedure is for the gasoline engine coolant water pump, not the hybrid inverter/electric coolant pump.


⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Your RAV4 is a hybrid. Do not touch orange high-voltage cables or hybrid components.
  • ⚠️ Let the engine cool completely before opening the cooling system. Hot coolant can cause serious burns.
  • ⚠️ Disconnect the 12V negative battery cable before working near the engine drive belt area.
  • ⚠️ Use jack stands if raising the vehicle. Never rely on a floor jack alone.
  • ⚠️ Coolant is toxic. Keep it away from pets and children, and recycle it properly.

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your RAV4 on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • Turn the vehicle fully OFF and keep the key fob away from the vehicle.
  • Let the engine cool for at least 2 hours before opening the coolant system.
  • Open the hood and remove the engine cover by lifting it straight up by hand.
  • Disconnect the 12V negative battery cable using a 10mm wrench. The 12V battery powers normal vehicle electronics, not the orange high-voltage system.
  • If using a cooling system vacuum fill tool, read its instructions first. A vacuum fill tool pulls air out of the cooling system so coolant can fill without trapped air pockets.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise and Secure the Front

  • Use a floor jack rated 2-ton minimum at the front center jacking point.
  • Place jack stands rated 2-ton minimum under the front side support points.
  • Gently lower the vehicle onto the stands and lightly shake the vehicle to confirm it is stable.
  • Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.

Step 2: Remove the Lower Engine Cover

  • Use a 10mm socket to remove the lower splash shield bolts.
  • Use a trim clip removal tool to remove plastic clips without breaking them.
  • Set the shield and fasteners aside in order.
  • Take a quick photo first.

Step 3: Drain the Engine Coolant

  • Place a drain pan rated 2-gallon minimum under the radiator drain area.
  • Slowly loosen the radiator drain cock by hand or with a flat-blade screwdriver if needed.
  • Open the coolant reservoir cap slowly by hand to help coolant drain.
  • Let coolant drain until flow slows to a drip.
  • Close the radiator drain cock snugly by hand. Do not overtighten plastic parts.

Step 4: Remove the Right Front Wheel-Area Access Panels if Needed

  • Use a 10mm socket to remove bolts from the right-side lower splash panel.
  • Use a trim clip removal tool to remove any plastic clips.
  • Move the panel aside to improve access to the belt and water pump area.

Step 5: Release Tension from the Serpentine Belt

  • Locate the belt tensioner. The tensioner is a spring-loaded arm that keeps the belt tight.
  • Use a serpentine belt tool or suitable 14mm wrench on the tensioner hex.
  • Rotate the tensioner slowly to release belt tension.
  • Slide the belt off the water pump pulley by hand.
  • Release the tensioner slowly. Do not let it snap back.
  • Draw the belt route first.

Step 6: Remove the Water Pump Pulley

  • Use a 10mm socket or 12mm socket as fitted to loosen the water pump pulley bolts.
  • If the pulley spins, hold the pulley carefully with a gloved hand while loosening the bolts.
  • Remove the pulley and set it aside.

Step 7: Remove the Engine Water Pump

  • Place the drain pan rated 2-gallon minimum under the water pump area because more coolant will spill.
  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch extension set to remove the water pump mounting bolts.
  • Use a 12mm socket if any bracket bolts block access.
  • Pull the water pump straight away from the engine by hand.
  • If it sticks, gently tap the pump housing by hand. Do not pry hard against the aluminum engine cover.

Step 8: Clean the Mounting Surface

  • Use shop towels to wipe coolant from the mounting area.
  • Make sure the old gasket or O-ring is fully removed by hand.
  • Do not gouge the aluminum surface with metal tools.
  • Clean surface equals leak-free seal.

Step 9: Install the New Water Pump

  • Install the new engine water pump gasket/O-ring onto the new pump.
  • Position the new engine water pump assembly against the engine by hand.
  • Start all mounting bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a 10mm socket to snug the bolts evenly in a crisscross pattern.
  • Use a torque wrench rated 5-50 Nm to tighten the water pump bolts to Torque to 11 Nm (97 in-lbs).

Step 10: Reinstall the Water Pump Pulley

  • Place the pulley onto the new water pump by hand.
  • Start the pulley bolts by hand.
  • Use a 10mm socket or 12mm socket to snug the pulley bolts evenly.
  • Use a torque wrench rated 5-50 Nm to tighten the pulley bolts to Torque to 21 Nm (15 ft-lbs).

Step 11: Install the Serpentine Belt

  • Route the belt around the pulleys using your belt routing photo or diagram.
  • Use a serpentine belt tool or 14mm wrench to rotate the tensioner.
  • Slide the belt over the final pulley by hand.
  • Release the tensioner slowly.
  • Check that the belt ribs sit fully in every pulley groove.

Step 12: Reinstall Splash Shields and Access Panels

  • Use a trim clip removal tool to guide plastic clips back into place.
  • Use a 10mm socket to reinstall lower shield bolts.
  • Tighten small splash shield bolts snugly by hand with the ratchet. Do not overtighten plastic panels.

Step 13: Refill the Cooling System

  • Lower the vehicle using the floor jack rated 2-ton minimum after removing the jack stands rated 2-ton minimum.
  • Use a long-neck funnel to fill the coolant reservoir with Toyota Super Long Life Coolant premixed 50/50.
  • For best results, use a cooling system vacuum fill tool to refill the system and reduce trapped air.
  • If filling without the vacuum tool, fill slowly and pause often to let air escape.

Step 14: Reconnect the 12V Battery

  • Use a 10mm wrench to reconnect the 12V negative battery cable.
  • Tighten the terminal until it does not rotate by hand.
  • Do not touch orange high-voltage cables.

Step 15: Bleed Air from the Cooling System

  • Keep the coolant reservoir cap loose or off during the initial warm-up.
  • Start your RAV4 and set cabin heat to maximum temperature with the fan on low.
  • Let the engine warm up while watching the coolant level.
  • Add Toyota Super Long Life Coolant premixed 50/50 through the reservoir as the level drops.
  • Watch for steady heat from the vents and no warning lights.
  • Install the coolant reservoir cap once the level stabilizes.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Inspect the water pump area with a flashlight for leaks while the engine is warm.
  • ✅ Confirm the serpentine belt runs straight and does not wobble or squeal.
  • ✅ Road test gently for 10-15 minutes while watching the temperature gauge and warning lights.
  • ✅ Let the engine cool fully, then recheck coolant level and top off if needed.
  • ✅ Recheck for leaks again the next day.
  • ✅ If the engine overheats, the heater blows cold, or coolant level keeps dropping, stop driving and recheck for trapped air or leaks.
