📋 Before You Begin
- Park your RAV4 on level ground and let the engine cool fully.
- Set the parking brake and place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
- Open the hood and remove the engine cover if it blocks access.
- Use a phone to take a picture of the serpentine belt routing before removal.
- A serpentine belt is the single long belt that runs the alternator, water pump pulley area, A/C compressor, and other accessories.
- A torque wrench is a tool that tightens bolts to an exact tightness so parts are not damaged.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Disconnect the Battery
- Use a 10mm socket to loosen the negative battery terminal clamp.
- Move the negative cable away from the battery post so it cannot spring back.
- Black cable comes off first.
Step 2: Raise and Secure the Front
- Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
- Use a floor jack rated 3-ton minimum at the front center jacking point.
- Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the proper front support points.
- Lower your RAV4 gently onto the stands and lightly shake the vehicle to confirm it is stable.
Step 3: Remove the Lower Engine Shield
- Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
- Use a 10mm socket to remove the lower splash shield bolts.
- Use a trim clip removal tool to release plastic push clips without breaking them.
- Set the shield and fasteners aside in order.
Step 4: Drain the Coolant
- Place a drain pan 2-gallon minimum under the radiator drain area.
- Slowly remove the coolant reservoir cap by hand only after the engine is cold.
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver by hand if needed to open the radiator drain cock.
- Drain the coolant until flow slows to a drip.
- Close the radiator drain cock by hand. Do not overtighten it.
Step 5: Remove the Right Front Wheel Area Access if Needed
- If access is tight, use a 19mm socket and 1/2-inch breaker bar to loosen the right front wheel lug nuts before lifting more.
- Remove the wheel with the 19mm socket.
- Use a 10mm socket and trim clip removal tool to remove the right-side inner splash shield fasteners as needed.
- When reinstalling the wheel later, Torque to 103 Nm (76 ft-lbs).
Step 6: Release the Serpentine Belt Tension
- Locate the belt tensioner. The tensioner is a spring-loaded pulley arm that keeps the belt tight.
- Use a serpentine belt tool or 14mm socket with a 1/2-inch breaker bar on the tensioner bolt.
- Rotate the tensioner slowly to relieve belt tension.
- Slide the belt off the water pump pulley or easiest upper pulley.
- Slowly release the tensioner back to its resting position.
- Remove the belt if replacing it, or move it aside if reusing it.
- Take a belt photo first.
Step 7: Remove the Water Pump Pulley if Equipped Separately
- If the pulley blocks water pump bolts, use a 10mm socket or 12mm socket to loosen the pulley bolts.
- Hold the pulley carefully by hand while loosening the bolts.
- Remove the pulley and set it aside.
- On reassembly, tighten small pulley bolts evenly. Typical Toyota small pulley bolt torque is about Torque to 21 Nm (15 ft-lbs).
Step 8: Remove the Water Pump
- Place shop towels below the pump area to catch remaining coolant.
- Use a 10mm socket and 6-inch socket extension to remove the water pump mounting bolts.
- Use a 12mm socket if any larger bracket or pump fastener is fitted.
- Gently pull the water pump away from the engine.
- If it is stuck, tap lightly by hand or carefully work it loose. Do not pry hard against aluminum sealing surfaces.
Step 9: Clean the Sealing Surface
- Use a plastic gasket scraper to remove old gasket material from the engine side.
- Wipe the surface clean with shop towels.
- Do not use a metal scraper, power sanding disc, or anything that can gouge aluminum.
- Clean surfaces stop leaks.
Step 10: Install the New Water Pump
- Install the new water pump gasket or O-ring onto the new pump.
- Position the new engine water pump squarely against the engine.
- Start all bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to snug the bolts in a crisscross pattern.
- Use a 3/8-inch torque wrench to tighten the water pump bolts evenly. Typical Toyota small water pump bolt torque is about Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).
- If your replacement pump includes different instructions, follow the pump manufacturer’s supplied torque value.
Step 11: Reinstall the Pulley and Serpentine Belt
- If removed, place the pulley back onto the pump hub.
- Use a 10mm socket or 12mm socket to install the pulley bolts by hand first.
- Use a 3/8-inch torque wrench to tighten the pulley bolts evenly to Torque to 21 Nm (15 ft-lbs).
- Route the serpentine belt using your photo.
- Use the serpentine belt tool or 14mm socket with 1/2-inch breaker bar to rotate the tensioner.
- Slip the belt fully onto the last pulley, then slowly release the tensioner.
- Check every pulley groove by hand and sight. The belt must sit straight in each groove.
Step 12: Reinstall Shields and Wheel
- Use a trim clip removal tool by hand to line up plastic clips.
- Use a 10mm socket to reinstall splash shield bolts.
- If the wheel was removed, install it with a 19mm socket and snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.
- Lower your RAV4 using the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum.
- Use a 1/2-inch torque wrench and 19mm socket to tighten lug nuts to Torque to 103 Nm (76 ft-lbs).
Step 13: Refill the Cooling System
- Install a coolant funnel spill-free kit at the coolant reservoir or radiator fill point as applicable.
- Pour in Toyota Super Long Life Coolant or equivalent pink premixed coolant slowly.
- Fill to the proper level mark.
- Squeeze the upper radiator hose by hand several times to help move trapped air.
- Do not mix green universal coolant with Toyota pink coolant.
Step 14: Reconnect the Battery and Bleed Air
- Use a 10mm socket to reconnect the negative battery cable.
- Start the engine and set the heater to full hot with the blower on low.
- Let the engine idle while watching the coolant level in the coolant funnel spill-free kit.
- Add coolant as the level drops.
- Watch for steady cabin heat and stable temperature gauge behavior.
- Install the cap once bubbles stop and coolant level stabilizes.
Step 15: Check for Leaks
- Use safety glasses and inspect around the new water pump with a light.
- Look for coolant dripping or wetness around the gasket edge.
- Use shop towels to wipe any old coolant residue so new leaks are easier to spot.
- Shut the engine off and let it cool completely.
- Recheck the coolant level and top off if needed.
