📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park your Forester on level ground, set the parking brake, and place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • ❄️ Make sure the engine is completely cold before removing the radiator cap or opening any hoses.
  • 🔋 Use a 10mm socket to disconnect the negative battery cable. A negative cable is the black cable marked “minus.”
  • 📸 Take photos before removing parts. This helps you route the belt and hoses correctly during reassembly.
  • 🧰 A vacuum fill tool pulls air out of the cooling system before adding coolant. It helps prevent trapped air pockets.
  • 💧 If you do not have a vacuum fill tool, use a spill-free coolant funnel kit and bleed the system carefully after repair.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise and Secure the Front

  • Use wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • Use a floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift the front of your Forester at the front center jacking point.
  • Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the front side support points.
  • Lower the vehicle gently onto the stands and shake the vehicle lightly to confirm it is stable.
  • Never trust the jack alone.

Step 2: Disconnect the Battery

  • Use a 10mm socket to loosen the negative battery terminal nut.
  • Lift the negative cable off the battery post and move it aside so it cannot spring back.
  • This prevents the electric cooling fans from turning on while your hands are nearby.

Step 3: Remove the Lower Engine Cover

  • Use a trim clip removal tool to remove the plastic push clips from the lower splash shield.
  • Use a 10mm socket to remove any small bolts holding the lower engine cover.
  • Set the shield and clips aside in order.
  • A trim clip tool is a small fork-shaped tool that removes plastic clips without breaking them.

Step 4: Drain the Coolant

  • Place a drain pan 2-gallon minimum under the radiator drain area.
  • Slowly remove the radiator cap by hand only after the engine is cold.
  • Use a flat-blade screwdriver if needed to open the radiator drain plug carefully.
  • Allow the coolant to drain fully into the pan.
  • Remove the old radiator drain plug gasket if it stays on the plug.
  • Open slowly to control splash.

Step 5: Remove the Engine Air Intake Ducting

  • Use a Phillips screwdriver or 10mm socket to loosen the intake duct clamps.
  • Use a trim clip removal tool to remove any intake snorkel clips.
  • Lift the ducting out of the way to create working space at the front of the engine.

Step 6: Remove the Serpentine Drive Belt

  • Draw or photograph the belt routing before removal.
  • Use a serpentine belt tool on the belt tensioner to rotate the tensioner and release belt tension.
  • Slide the belt off the pulleys by hand.
  • Inspect the old belt. Replace it if cracked, shiny, swollen, or oil-soaked.
  • A tensioner is a spring-loaded pulley that keeps the belt tight.

Step 7: Remove the Cooling Fan Assembly if Needed

  • Use a 10mm socket to remove the upper cooling fan mounting bolts.
  • Unplug the fan electrical connectors by pressing the lock tab with your fingers or a flat-blade screwdriver.
  • Lift the fan assembly upward carefully and remove it from the engine bay.
  • Keep the fan upright to avoid damaging the plastic shroud.

Step 8: Remove Hoses from the Water Pump Area

  • Use hose clamp pliers to compress the spring clamps on the coolant hoses near the water pump.
  • Slide the clamps back along the hoses.
  • Twist the hoses gently by hand to break them loose, then pull them off.
  • Use a flat-blade screwdriver only to gently help loosen stuck hoses. Do not gouge the metal fittings.
  • Twist first, then pull.

Step 9: Remove the Water Pump

  • Use a 10mm socket and 12mm socket to remove the water pump mounting bolts.
  • Note each bolt location because lengths may differ.
  • Tap the water pump lightly by hand if it is stuck. Do not pry hard against the aluminum engine surface.
  • Remove the water pump and old gasket.
  • Expect more coolant to spill. Keep the drain pan underneath.

Step 10: Clean the Mounting Surface

  • Use a plastic gasket scraper to remove old gasket material from the engine mounting surface.
  • Use shop towels to wipe the surface clean and dry.
  • Do not use a metal scraper. The aluminum surface scratches easily and can leak afterward.
  • Make sure no gasket pieces fall into the coolant passages.

Step 11: Install the New Water Pump

  • Place the new water pump gasket onto the new water pump.
  • Position the new water pump squarely against the engine by hand.
  • Start all bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a 10mm socket and 12mm socket to snug the bolts in a crisscross pattern.
  • Use a 3/8-inch torque wrench to tighten the water pump bolts evenly to Torque to 8 Nm (71 in-lbs) unless the pump manufacturer specifies a different value.
  • Even tightening prevents leaks.

Step 12: Reconnect Coolant Hoses

  • Slide each hose fully onto its fitting by hand.
  • Use hose clamp pliers to move each spring clamp back to its original position.
  • Replace weak, rusty, or distorted clamps with new spring hose clamps.
  • Make sure the hoses are not kinked or rubbing the belt path.

Step 13: Reinstall the Cooling Fan Assembly

  • Lower the fan assembly carefully into position.
  • Use a 10mm socket to install the fan mounting bolts.
  • Use a 3/8-inch torque wrench to tighten the fan mounting bolts to Torque to 7.5 Nm (66 in-lbs).
  • Reconnect the fan electrical connectors until each lock clicks.

Step 14: Install the Serpentine Drive Belt

  • Route the new serpentine drive belt around the pulleys using your photo or belt routing diagram.
  • Use a serpentine belt tool to rotate the tensioner.
  • Slide the belt over the final pulley, then slowly release the tensioner.
  • Check that the belt ribs sit correctly in every pulley groove.
  • Use a 17mm socket on the crankshaft pulley bolt to turn the engine clockwise by hand one full turn if extra belt seating confirmation is needed.

Step 15: Reinstall Intake Ducting and Lower Cover

  • Use a Phillips screwdriver or 10mm socket to reinstall the air intake ducting and tighten the clamps.
  • Use a trim clip removal tool by hand to reinstall the splash shield clips.
  • Use a 10mm socket to reinstall the lower engine cover bolts.

Step 16: Refill the Cooling System

  • Install a new radiator drain plug gasket and close the drain plug by hand. Snug it gently with a flat-blade screwdriver if needed.
  • Preferred method: use a cooling system vacuum fill tool to pull vacuum, then draw Subaru-compatible blue super coolant premix into the system.
  • Beginner method: install a coolant funnel kit at the radiator fill neck and slowly add Subaru-compatible blue super coolant premix.
  • Fill until coolant stays visible in the funnel.
  • Fill the overflow reservoir to the “FULL” mark.

Step 17: Reconnect the Battery

  • Place the negative battery cable back onto the battery post.
  • Use a 10mm socket to tighten the terminal nut snugly.
  • Do not overtighten the battery terminal.

Step 18: Bleed Air from the Cooling System

  • Keep the coolant funnel kit installed and partly filled.
  • Start the engine and set the climate control to full hot with the fan on low.
  • Let the engine idle while watching for bubbles in the funnel.
  • As the thermostat opens, the coolant level may drop. Add more Subaru-compatible blue super coolant premix as needed.
  • When the upper radiator hose becomes hot and cabin heat is steady, most air is out.
  • Install the radiator cap by hand once bubbling stops and the level is correct.
  • A thermostat is a temperature-controlled valve that opens when the engine warms up.

Step 19: Check for Leaks

  • Use a flashlight to inspect around the water pump, hoses, radiator drain plug, and lower engine area.
  • Let the engine reach normal operating temperature.
  • Confirm the cooling fans cycle on and off.
  • Shut the engine off and let it cool completely.
  • Recheck the radiator and reservoir levels after cooling.

  • ✅ Road test your Forester for 10-15 minutes while watching the temperature gauge.
  • ✅ After the engine cools, recheck the coolant level in the radiator and overflow reservoir.
  • ✅ Look underneath for drips after the road test.
  • ✅ Check belt tracking. The belt should run centered and quiet on all pulleys.
  • ✅ Dispose of old coolant at a proper recycling or hazardous-waste facility. Do not pour it on the ground or into drains.
  • ✅ If overheating continues, stop driving and check for trapped air, thermostat issues, radiator restriction, or head gasket problems.
