Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Raise and Secure the Front

- Use a floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift the front of your Forester at the front center jacking point.
- Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the front side support points.
- Lower the vehicle gently onto the stands and shake the vehicle lightly to confirm it is stable.
- Never trust the jack alone.
Step 2: Disconnect the Battery
- Use a 10mm socket to loosen the negative battery terminal nut.
- Lift the negative cable off the battery post and move it aside so it cannot spring back.

Step 5: Remove the Engine Air Intake Ducting

Step 6: Remove the Serpentine Drive Belt

- Remove the water pump and old gasket.
- Expect more coolant to spill. Keep the drain pan underneath.
Step 10: Clean the Mounting Surface

- Use shop towels to wipe the surface clean and dry.
- Do not use a metal scraper. The aluminum surface scratches easily and can leak afterward.
- Make sure no gasket pieces fall into the coolant passages.
Step 11: Install the New Water Pump
- Place the new water pump gasket onto the new water pump.
- Position the new water pump squarely against the engine by hand.
- Start all bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Use a 10mm socket and 12mm socket to snug the bolts in a crisscross pattern.
- Use a 3/8-inch torque wrench to tighten the water pump bolts evenly to Torque to 8 Nm (71 in-lbs) unless the pump manufacturer specifies a different value.
- Even tightening prevents leaks.
Step 12: Reconnect Coolant Hoses
- Slide each hose fully onto its fitting by hand.
- Use hose clamp pliers to move each spring clamp back to its original position.
- Replace weak, rusty, or distorted clamps with new spring hose clamps.
- Make sure the hoses are not kinked or rubbing the belt path.
Step 13: Reinstall the Cooling Fan Assembly
- Lower the fan assembly carefully into position.
- Use a 10mm socket to install the fan mounting bolts.
- Use a 3/8-inch torque wrench to tighten the fan mounting bolts to Torque to 7.5 Nm (66 in-lbs).
- Reconnect the fan electrical connectors until each lock clicks.

Step 16: Refill the Cooling System

- Preferred method: use a cooling system vacuum fill tool to pull vacuum, then draw Subaru-compatible blue super coolant premix into the system.
- Beginner method: install a coolant funnel kit at the radiator fill neck and slowly add Subaru-compatible blue super coolant premix.
- Fill until coolant stays visible in the funnel.
- Fill the overflow reservoir to the “FULL” mark.
Step 17: Reconnect the Battery
- Place the negative battery cable back onto the battery post.
- Use a 10mm socket to tighten the terminal nut snugly.
- Do not overtighten the battery terminal.
Step 18: Bleed Air from the Cooling System
- Keep the coolant funnel kit installed and partly filled.
- Start the engine and set the climate control to full hot with the fan on low.
- Let the engine idle while watching for bubbles in the funnel.
- As the thermostat opens, the coolant level may drop. Add more Subaru-compatible blue super coolant premix as needed.
- When the upper radiator hose becomes hot and cabin heat is steady, most air is out.
- Install the radiator cap by hand once bubbling stops and the level is correct.

Step 19: Check for Leaks
- Use a flashlight to inspect around the water pump, hoses, radiator drain plug, and lower engine area.
- Let the engine reach normal operating temperature.
- Confirm the cooling fans cycle on and off.
- Shut the engine off and let it cool completely.
- Recheck the radiator and reservoir levels after cooling.
