Replacing the water pump on your Accord means draining the coolant, removing the accessory belt, replacing the pump and seal, then refilling and bleeding the cooling system. This pump is external on the 1.5L turbo engine and is driven by the serpentine belt, not the timing chain.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise and Secure the Front

  • Use wheel chocks behind both rear wheels.
  • Use a floor jack, 2-ton minimum to lift the front of your Accord at the front center jacking point.
  • Place jack stands, 2-ton minimum under the front side support points.
  • Lower the car gently onto the jack stands and confirm it feels stable.

Step 2: Remove the Lower Splash Shield

  • Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
  • Use a trim clip removal tool to remove the plastic push clips from the lower engine splash shield.
  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the splash shield bolts.
  • Lower the shield and set it aside.
  • Save clips in a cup.

Step 3: Drain the Coolant

  • Place a drain pan, 2-gallon minimum under the radiator drain area.
  • Confirm the engine is cold, then slowly remove the coolant reservoir cap by hand.
  • Use a flat-blade screwdriver if needed to carefully open the radiator drain plug.
  • Drain the coolant until the flow slows to a drip.
  • Close the radiator drain plug by hand. Do not overtighten it.

Step 4: Remove the Right Front Wheel for Access

  • Use a 19mm socket and 3/8-inch breaker bar to loosen the right front wheel lug nuts slightly before lifting higher if needed.
  • With the vehicle safely supported, use a 19mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the lug nuts.
  • Remove the right front wheel and set it flat on the ground.
  • Use a trim clip removal tool and 10mm socket to remove the inner fender access splash panel if it blocks the belt area.

Step 5: Remove the Serpentine Belt

  • Use a serpentine belt tool (specialty) or 3/8-inch breaker bar on the belt tensioner.
  • Rotate the tensioner slowly to release belt tension. The tensioner is the spring-loaded pulley that keeps the belt tight.
  • Slide the belt off one pulley by hand, then slowly let the tensioner return.
  • Remove the belt from the remaining pulleys.
  • Do not let tensioner snap back.

Step 6: Move Obstructions Near the Water Pump

  • Use hose clamp pliers to slide back any coolant hose clamp blocking pump access.
  • Twist the hose gently by hand to loosen it, then pull it off only if needed.
  • Use a 10mm socket or 12mm socket with a 3/8-inch ratchet to remove small brackets in the way.
  • Take a quick photo before removing each bracket so it goes back correctly.

Step 7: Remove the Water Pump

  • Place shop towels below the water pump to catch leftover coolant.
  • Use a 10mm socket, 12mm socket, 3/8-inch extension set, and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the water pump mounting bolts.
  • Keep the bolts arranged in the same pattern they came out. Some may be different lengths.
  • Pull the water pump straight off by hand.
  • If it is stuck, wiggle it gently. Do not gouge the aluminum mounting surface.

Step 8: Clean the Sealing Surface

  • Use a plastic gasket scraper to remove old gasket material from the engine mounting surface.
  • Use shop towels to wipe the surface clean and dry.
  • Make sure no old seal pieces fall into the coolant passage.
  • Do not use sandpaper discs or metal scrapers.
  • Clean surfaces stop leaks.

Step 9: Install the New Water Pump

  • Install the new water pump gasket/O-ring on the new pump.
  • Hold the new pump flat against the engine.
  • Start every mounting bolt by hand first to prevent cross-threading.
  • Use a 10mm socket, 12mm socket, 3/8-inch extension set, and torque wrench, 5-50 Nm range to tighten bolts evenly in a crisscross pattern.
  • Torque water pump bolts to 12 Nm (9 ft-lbs).

Step 10: Reinstall Hoses and Brackets

  • Use a 10mm socket or 12mm socket with the torque wrench, 5-50 Nm range to reinstall any removed brackets.
  • Torque small bracket bolts to 12 Nm (9 ft-lbs).
  • Push coolant hoses fully onto their fittings by hand.
  • Use hose clamp pliers to move each clamp back to its original position.

Step 11: Install the Serpentine Belt

  • Route the new serpentine belt around the pulleys using your photo as a guide.
  • Use the serpentine belt tool (specialty) or 3/8-inch breaker bar to rotate the tensioner.
  • Slide the belt over the final pulley by hand.
  • Slowly release the tensioner.
  • Look closely at every pulley. The belt ribs must sit inside the grooves.

Step 12: Reinstall the Wheel and Splash Panels

  • Use a trim clip removal tool or your fingers to reinstall inner fender clips.
  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to reinstall splash panel bolts.
  • Torque splash panel bolts to 9 Nm (80 in-lbs).
  • Install the right front wheel by hand.
  • Use a 19mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.

Step 13: Lower the Vehicle and Torque the Wheel

  • Use the floor jack, 2-ton minimum to lift the front slightly off the jack stands.
  • Remove the jack stands, 2-ton minimum.
  • Lower your Accord until the tire just touches the ground.
  • Use a 19mm socket and torque wrench, 5-50 Nm range if suitable, or a higher-range torque wrench if available, to tighten lug nuts in a star pattern.
  • Torque wheel lug nuts to 108 Nm (80 ft-lbs).
  • Lower the vehicle fully.

Step 14: Refill the Cooling System

  • Install the coolant funnel kit with spill-free adapter on the coolant fill point.
  • Slowly add Honda-compatible blue premixed coolant until the level stays steady.
  • Squeeze the upper and lower radiator hoses by hand several times to help push air out.
  • Set the climate control to maximum heat and low fan speed.

Step 15: Bleed Air from the Cooling System

  • Start the engine and let it idle with the coolant funnel kit with spill-free adapter installed.
  • Watch for bubbles coming up through the funnel.
  • Add Honda-compatible blue premixed coolant as needed to keep the funnel from running empty.
  • Let the engine warm up until the radiator fan turns on at least once.
  • Keep clear of the belt and fan while the engine is running.
  • When bubbles stop and the heater blows steady hot air, shut the engine off.

Step 16: Final Leak Check

  • Use safety glasses and inspect the water pump area, hose connections, and radiator drain plug.
  • Use shop towels to dry any wet spots, then watch for fresh coolant.
  • Remove the coolant funnel kit with spill-free adapter and install the coolant cap by hand.
  • Make sure the coolant reservoir level is between the MIN and MAX marks.

  • ✅ Test drive your Accord for 10-15 minutes while watching the temperature gauge.
  • ✅ Confirm the heater blows hot air at idle and while driving.
  • ✅ After the engine cools fully, recheck coolant level and top off if needed.
  • ✅ Recheck the new water pump area for leaks after 1-2 heat cycles.
  • ✅ Listen for belt squeal or chirping. If heard, shut the engine off and recheck belt routing.
