🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Release Cooling System Pressure
- Make sure the engine is fully cold before touching the coolant cap.
- Use a shop towel and your hand to slowly loosen the coolant reservoir cap.
- If you hear pressure escaping, stop and wait longer before continuing.
- Never rush a hot cooling system.
Step 2: Raise and Support the Vehicle
- Use a floor jack to lift the front of your CR-V at the front jacking point.
- Place jack stands under the front support points.
- Lower your CR-V gently onto the jack stands.
- Leave the floor jack nearby, but do not use it as the only support.
Step 3: Remove the Lower Splash Shield
- Use a plastic trim removal tool to remove the plastic splash shield clips.
- Use a 10mm socket with a 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove any 10mm splash shield fasteners.
- Remove the splash shield and set the hardware aside in order.
- For reinstallation later, tighten splash shield bolts to Torque to 9 Nm (80 in-lbs).
Step 4: Drain the Coolant
- Place a 2-gallon drain pan under the radiator drain area.
- Use your hand or a flat-blade screwdriver to open the radiator drain plug if accessible.
- Drain the coolant until the radiator and engine water pump area are below coolant level.
- Close the radiator drain plug by hand. Do not overtighten it.
- If the drain plug is not accessible, use the drain pan and remove the lower radiator hose carefully.
Step 5: Loosen the Water Pump Pulley Bolts
- Before removing the belt, use a pulley holding tool to keep the water pump pulley from turning.
- Use a 10mm socket with a 3/8-inch drive ratchet to loosen the water pump pulley bolts about one turn.
- Do not remove the pulley bolts yet.
- Loosen pulley bolts before belt removal.
Step 6: Remove the Serpentine Drive Belt
- Use a serpentine belt tool or 3/8-inch drive breaker bar on the belt tensioner.
- Rotate the tensioner to release belt tension.
- Slide the belt off the water pump pulley by hand.
- Slowly release the tensioner. Do not let it snap back.

Step 7: Remove the Water Pump Pulley
- Use the pulley holding tool again to hold the pulley steady.
- Use a 10mm socket with a 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the loosened water pump pulley bolts.
- Remove the water pump pulley by hand.
- Set the pulley on a clean surface.
Step 8: Remove the Water Pump
- Place shop towels below the pump to catch leftover coolant.
- Use a 10mm socket or 12mm socket with a 3/8-inch drive ratchet and 6-inch extension to remove the water pump mounting bolts.
- Remove the bolts evenly and keep track of their positions.
- Pull the water pump straight off by hand.
- If it is stuck, use a plastic gasket scraper gently at the edge. Do not pry hard on aluminum.
Step 9: Clean the Mounting Surface
- Use a plastic gasket scraper to remove old gasket material from the engine-side surface.
- Use shop towels to wipe the surface clean and dry.
- Use a pick tool set only for small stuck pieces near corners.
- Do not scratch or gouge the aluminum sealing surface.
- The surface must be smooth so the new gasket can seal.
Step 10: Install the New Water Pump
- Install the new water pump gasket or O-ring onto the new pump by hand.
- Position the new water pump against the engine carefully.
- Start all mounting bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Use a 10mm socket or 12mm socket with a 3/8-inch drive ratchet to snug the bolts evenly in a crisscross pattern.
- Use a torque wrench inch-pound to tighten the water pump mounting bolts to Torque to 12 Nm (106 in-lbs).
Step 11: Reinstall the Water Pump Pulley
- Place the water pump pulley onto the new pump by hand.
- Start all pulley bolts by hand.
- Use a 10mm socket with a 3/8-inch drive ratchet to snug the pulley bolts lightly.
- Final torque will happen after the belt is installed.
Step 12: Reinstall the Serpentine Drive Belt
- Use your belt routing photo to route the belt around the pulleys.
- Use the serpentine belt tool or 3/8-inch drive breaker bar to rotate the tensioner.
- Slide the belt over the final pulley by hand.
- Slowly release the tensioner.
- Check that the belt ribs sit fully in every pulley groove.
Step 13: Torque the Water Pump Pulley Bolts
- Use the pulley holding tool to hold the water pump pulley steady.
- Use a 10mm socket with a torque wrench foot-pound to tighten the pulley bolts evenly.
- Tighten the water pump pulley bolts to Torque to 12 Nm (106 in-lbs).
- Double-check that the pulley spins straight and does not wobble.
Step 14: Refill the Cooling System
- Install a coolant funnel kit with radiator adapter at the fill point if the adapter fits.
- Slowly add Honda Type 2 coolant or equivalent blue premixed coolant.
- Fill the coolant reservoir to the correct level mark.
- Squeeze the upper radiator hose by hand several times to help move trapped air.
Step 15: Bleed Air from the Cooling System
- Leave the coolant funnel partly filled.
- Start the engine and let it idle.
- Set the heater temperature to full hot and the blower to low.
- Add coolant as the level drops.

- Use a 10mm socket with a 3/8-inch drive ratchet to reinstall the 10mm splash shield fasteners.
- Tighten splash shield bolts to Torque to 9 Nm (80 in-lbs).
Step 18: Lower the Vehicle
- Use the floor jack to lift your CR-V slightly off the jack stands.
- Remove the jack stands.
- Lower the vehicle slowly with the floor jack.
- Remove the wheel chocks after the vehicle is safely on the ground.
