🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove Engine Cover and Intake Duct
- Use a 10mm socket to remove any intake duct fasteners near the front of the engine.
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver to loosen the air duct clamps.
- Lift the duct out of the way to create room around the fan shroud.
- Take photos before removing parts.
Step 2: Drain the Coolant
- Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
- Place a 3-gallon drain pan under the radiator drain area.
- Slowly remove the radiator cap only after the engine is cold.
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver or fingers to open the radiator drain plug if equipped.
- If the drain plug is difficult to access, use hose clamp pliers to remove the lower radiator hose and drain coolant into the pan.
- Close the radiator drain or reinstall the lower hose once draining slows.
Step 3: Remove the Fan Shroud
- Use a plastic trim clip remover to release the upper shroud clips.
- Use a 10mm socket to remove the fan shroud bolts.
- Move the shroud rearward slightly to access the fan clutch.
- Do not force the shroud against the radiator fins.
Step 4: Remove the Cooling Fan and Clutch
- Use the fan clutch wrench set to loosen the large fan clutch nut from the water pump hub.
- Turn the nut counterclockwise when viewed from the front of the vehicle.
- Once loose, spin the fan clutch off by hand while supporting the fan.
- Lift the fan and shroud out together if clearance is tight.
- Do not lay the fan clutch flat.
Step 5: Remove the Serpentine Belt
- Use the serpentine belt tool or 1/2-inch breaker bar on the belt tensioner.
- Rotate the tensioner to release belt tension.
- Slide the belt off the water pump pulley first.
- Slowly release the tensioner back to its resting position.
- Draw a belt routing picture before fully removing the belt.
Step 6: Remove the Water Pump Pulley
- Use a 10mm or 12mm socket, depending on pulley bolt head size, to remove the water pump pulley bolts.
- If the pulley spins, use the belt to hold light tension on the pulley while loosening the bolts.
- Remove the pulley and set it aside.
- During installation, tighten the pulley bolts evenly to Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).
Step 7: Remove Hoses or Brackets Blocking the Pump
- Use hose clamp pliers to move any spring clamps away from the pump hose connections.
- Twist hoses gently by hand to break them loose before pulling.
- Use a 10mm or 12mm socket to remove any small brackets blocking pump access.
- Mark hose positions with tape if needed.
Step 8: Remove the Old Water Pump
- Use a 12mm socket to remove the water pump mounting bolts.
- Keep track of bolt locations if lengths differ.
- Tap the pump lightly by hand to break the gasket seal.
- Pull the pump straight away from the engine.
- Expect leftover coolant to spill into the drain pan.
Step 9: Clean the Sealing Surface
- Use a plastic gasket scraper to clean the engine sealing surface.
- Use shop towels to wipe away old gasket material and coolant residue.
- Do not gouge the aluminum surface.
- Do not let debris fall into the coolant passages.
- Clean metal seals better.
Step 10: Install the New Water Pump
- Install the new water pump gasket or O-ring seal onto the new pump.
- If the seal is an O-ring, lightly wet it with fresh coolant.
- Position the pump squarely against the engine by hand.
- Start all bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Use a 12mm socket to snug the bolts in a crisscross pattern.
- Use a torque wrench to tighten the water pump bolts to Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).
Step 11: Reinstall Pulley, Belt, Fan, and Shroud
- Use a 10mm or 12mm socket to reinstall the water pump pulley bolts.
- Tighten pulley bolts evenly to Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).
- Use the serpentine belt tool to rotate the tensioner.
- Route the belt exactly as it was before removal.
- Make sure the belt ribs sit fully in every pulley groove.
- Use the fan clutch wrench set to reinstall the fan clutch onto the water pump hub.
- Tighten the fan clutch nut securely to Torque to 59 Nm (44 ft-lbs).
- Use a 10mm socket to reinstall the fan shroud bolts.
Step 12: Refill the Cooling System
- Install a spill-free coolant funnel at the radiator fill neck.
- Fill with Nissan-compatible coolant until the radiator stays full.
- Fill the coolant reservoir to the MAX line.
- Use a 10mm socket to reconnect the negative battery cable.
Step 13: Bleed Air from the Cooling System
- Start the engine and set the heater to full hot with the blower on low.
- Let the engine idle while watching the coolant level in the funnel.
- Add coolant as air bubbles come out.
- When the upper radiator hose gets hot, the thermostat has opened.
- Continue until bubbles stop and the heater blows hot air.
- Install the radiator cap once the coolant level stabilizes.
