Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Raise and Secure the Front
- Use a floor jack rated 2-ton minimum to lift the front of your Civic at the front center jacking point.
- Place jack stands rated 2-ton minimum under the front side pinch welds.
- Lower the Civic gently onto the jack stands and lightly shake the vehicle to confirm it is stable.
- Never work under only a jack.
Step 2: Remove the Lower Splash Shield

- Wipe the area with shop towels until clean and dry.
- Do not use a metal scraper because it can gouge the aluminum surface and cause leaks.
- Check that no old O-ring or gasket pieces remain in the groove.
Step 9: Install the New Water Pump
- Install the new water pump gasket or O-ring seal onto the new engine water pump.
- Position the pump squarely against the engine by hand.
- Start all mounting bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Use a 10mm socket and 12mm socket to snug the bolts evenly in a crisscross pattern.
- Use a 3/8-inch torque wrench to tighten the water pump bolts to Torque to 12 Nm (9 ft-lbs) unless the replacement pump instructions specify otherwise.
- Even tightening prevents leaks.
Step 10: Reinstall the Water Pump Pulley
- Place the pulley back onto the water pump hub.
- Start the pulley bolts by hand.
- Use a 10mm socket to snug the bolts evenly.
- Use a 3/8-inch torque wrench to tighten the pulley bolts to Torque to 12 Nm (9 ft-lbs).
Step 11: Install the Serpentine Belt
- Route the new serpentine drive belt around the pulleys using your belt-routing photo.
- Use the 19mm socket and long-handled serpentine belt tool to rotate the tensioner again.
- Slip the belt over the final pulley, then slowly release the tensioner.
- Check that the belt ribs sit fully in every pulley groove.
- Misrouted belts can shred quickly.
Step 12: Reinstall Removed Covers and Shields
- Use a 10mm socket to reinstall any upper ducting or covers.

- Use a 10mm socket to reinstall splash shield bolts.
- Tighten small splash shield bolts to Torque to 9 Nm (80 in-lbs).
