- Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
- Let the engine cool completely.
- Open the hood and remove the key from the vehicle.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket.
- A serpentine belt is the long belt that drives engine accessories such as the alternator and water pump.
- A spill-free funnel is a funnel that locks onto the radiator or reservoir neck to help remove trapped air from the cooling system.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Raise and Support the Front
- Use the floor jack to lift the front of your Civic at the front center jacking point.
- Place jack stands under the correct front support points.
- Lower the vehicle gently onto the jack stands.
- Keep the floor jack lightly touching the jacking point as backup support.
Step 2: Remove the Lower Splash Shield

Step 6: Remove the Water Pump Pulley Bolts
- Use the 10mm socket to loosen the water pump pulley bolts.
- If the pulley turns, press the old serpentine belt against the pulley by hand for grip while loosening.
- Remove the pulley bolts and set the pulley aside.
Step 7: Remove the Water Pump
- Place the drain pan under the water pump area.
- Use the 10mm socket and 12mm socket to remove the water pump mounting bolts.

- Do not use a metal scraper, sandpaper, or power tool on the aluminum surface.
- The sealing surface must be clean and smooth before the new pump is installed.
Step 9: Install the New Water Pump
- Place the new gasket or O-ring onto the new water pump.
- Hold the water pump squarely against the engine.
- Start all mounting bolts by hand to avoid cross-threading.
- Use the torque wrench with the correct socket to tighten the water pump bolts evenly in a crisscross pattern.
- Torque to 12 Nm (9 ft-lbs)
Step 10: Reinstall the Water Pump Pulley
- Set the pulley onto the new water pump by hand.
- Start the pulley bolts by hand.
- Use the 10mm socket to snug the bolts evenly.
- Use the torque wrench with the 10mm socket to tighten the pulley bolts.
- Torque to 12 Nm (9 ft-lbs)
Step 11: Install the Serpentine Belt
- Route the new serpentine belt around the pulleys using your photo as a guide.
- Use the 19mm wrench to rotate the belt tensioner and release tension.
- Slide the belt over the final pulley.
- Slowly release the tensioner.
- Use the flashlight to confirm the belt ribs sit correctly in every pulley groove.
Step 12: Refill the Cooling System
- Install the spill-free coolant funnel onto the coolant fill point.
- Pour Honda-compatible blue coolant premix slowly into the funnel.
- Fill until the coolant level stays steady.
- Fill the coolant reservoir to the MAX mark.
Step 13: Bleed Air from the Cooling System
- Reconnect the negative battery cable using the 10mm socket.
- Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs)
- Start the engine and set the cabin heater to full hot with the fan on low.
- Let the engine idle while watching the coolant level in the spill-free funnel.
- Add coolant as the level drops.
- Wait for warm air from the vents and for the radiator fan to cycle on.
- Shut the engine OFF and let it cool.
- Remove the spill-free funnel and install the cap securely by hand.
Step 14: Reinstall the Lower Splash Shield
- Raise the splash shield into position by hand.
- Use your hands to reinstall the plastic push clips.
- Use the 10mm socket to reinstall any 10mm bolts.
- Torque to 9 Nm (80 in-lbs)
Step 15: Lower the Vehicle
- Use the floor jack to raise your Civic slightly off the jack stands.
