📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park your Pilot on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • ❄️ Wait until the engine is fully cold before draining coolant.
  • 🔋 Use a 10mm socket to disconnect the negative battery cable.
  • 🛞 Raise the front passenger side with a floor jack and support it with jack stands.
  • 🧠 A timing belt keeps the crankshaft and camshafts synchronized. If it is installed wrong, the engine can be damaged.
  • 🧰 A torque wrench tightens bolts to an exact specification. This prevents loose bolts or stripped threads.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Drain the Coolant

  • Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
  • Place a 2-gallon drain pan under the radiator drain area.
  • Use pliers if needed to open the radiator drain plug slowly.
  • Remove the radiator cap by hand only after the engine is cold.
  • Let the coolant drain fully, then close the drain plug gently.

Step 2: Remove the Passenger Front Wheel and Splash Shield

  • Use a 19mm socket to loosen the passenger front wheel lug nuts.
  • Raise the vehicle with a 3-ton floor jack and support it with 3-ton jack stands.
  • Use a 19mm socket to remove the lug nuts and wheel.
  • Use a trim clip removal tool and Phillips screwdriver to remove the inner splash shield clips and screws.

Step 3: Remove the Serpentine Belt

  • Use a 14mm serpentine belt tool on the belt tensioner.
  • Rotate the tensioner to release belt tension.
  • Slide the belt off the pulleys by hand.
  • Take a belt routing photo first.

Step 4: Support the Engine

  • Place a floor jack with a wood block under the engine oil pan.
  • Lift only until the wood block lightly supports the engine.
  • Do not crush or dent the oil pan.

Step 5: Remove the Right Engine Mount

  • Use 14mm and 17mm sockets to remove the right-side engine mount fasteners.
  • Remove the mount from the engine bay.
  • Keep bolts organized by location.
  • During installation, torque typical right mount fasteners to Torque to 54 Nm (40 ft-lbs) unless your replacement hardware specifies otherwise.

Step 6: Remove the Crankshaft Pulley Bolt

  • Install the Honda 50mm crankshaft pulley holding tool onto the crankshaft pulley.
  • Use a 19mm high-mass crankshaft pulley bolt socket with a 1/2-inch breaker bar.
  • Loosen and remove the crankshaft pulley bolt.
  • Slide the crankshaft pulley off by hand.
  • This bolt is extremely tight.

Step 7: Remove the Timing Belt Covers

  • Use a 10mm socket to remove the upper and lower timing belt cover bolts.
  • Remove the covers carefully.
  • Inspect for oil or coolant contamination inside the covers.

Step 8: Set Engine to Top Dead Center

  • Use a 19mm socket on the crankshaft bolt area to rotate the engine clockwise only.
  • Line up the crankshaft timing mark with its pointer.
  • Line up both camshaft pulley marks with their timing reference marks.
  • Use a paint marker to mark the belt-to-pulley positions before removal.
  • Top Dead Center means cylinder #1 is positioned at the correct timing reference point.

Step 9: Remove the Timing Belt Tension

  • Use a 12mm socket to remove the hydraulic tensioner bolts.
  • Remove the hydraulic tensioner from the engine.
  • Use a 14mm socket to loosen the tensioner pulley bolt if needed.
  • Slide the timing belt off the pulleys by hand.
  • Do not turn the camshaft pulleys after the belt is removed.

Step 10: Remove the Old Water Pump

  • Place the drain pan under the water pump area.
  • Use a 10mm socket to remove the water pump bolts.
  • Pull the water pump straight off the engine.
  • Use a plastic scraper to clean the sealing surface.
  • Do not gouge the aluminum engine surface.

Step 11: Install the New Water Pump

  • Install the new water pump gasket onto the new pump.
  • Place the water pump against the engine by hand.
  • Use a 10mm socket to install the bolts finger-tight first.
  • Tighten the bolts evenly in a crisscross pattern.
  • Torque the water pump bolts to Torque to 12 Nm (9 ft-lbs).

Step 12: Install New Timing Components

  • Use a 14mm socket to install the new idler pulley and tensioner pulley.
  • Torque timing pulley bolts to Torque to 44 Nm (33 ft-lbs).
  • Install the new timing belt, keeping the timing marks aligned.
  • Route the belt tightly on the non-tensioned side first.
  • Install the new hydraulic tensioner with a 12mm socket.
  • Torque hydraulic tensioner bolts to Torque to 22 Nm (16 ft-lbs).

Step 13: Release the Hydraulic Tensioner

  • Double-check all camshaft and crankshaft timing marks.
  • Pull the retaining pin from the hydraulic tensioner by hand or with pliers.
  • Wait a few minutes for the tensioner to apply belt tension.

Step 14: Verify Timing by Hand

  • Use a 19mm socket and breaker bar to rotate the crankshaft clockwise two full turns.
  • Stop at Top Dead Center again.
  • Confirm the crankshaft and both camshaft timing marks still line up exactly.
  • If the marks do not line up, remove the belt and correct timing before continuing.

Step 15: Reinstall Timing Covers and Crankshaft Pulley

  • Use a 10mm socket to reinstall the timing belt covers.
  • Slide the crankshaft pulley onto the crankshaft by hand.
  • Install a new crankshaft pulley bolt.
  • Use the Honda 50mm holding tool and 19mm high-mass socket to tighten the bolt.
  • Torque the crankshaft pulley bolt to Torque to 245 Nm (181 ft-lbs).

Step 16: Reinstall the Engine Mount

  • Use the floor jack with wood block to align the engine mount holes.
  • Install the right engine mount and bolts by hand first.
  • Use 14mm and 17mm sockets to tighten the fasteners.
  • Torque typical right mount fasteners to Torque to 54 Nm (40 ft-lbs).

Step 17: Install the Serpentine Belt

  • Route the new serpentine belt over the pulleys using your photo as a guide.
  • Use the 14mm serpentine belt tool to rotate the tensioner.
  • Slide the belt over the final pulley by hand.
  • Release the tensioner slowly.
  • Check that the belt ribs sit fully in every pulley groove.

Step 18: Reinstall Splash Shield and Wheel

  • Use the trim clip removal tool and Phillips screwdriver to reinstall the splash shield clips and screws.
  • Install the passenger front wheel by hand.
  • Use a 19mm socket to snug the lug nuts.
  • Lower the vehicle with the floor jack.
  • Torque the wheel lug nuts to Torque to 127 Nm (94 ft-lbs).

Step 19: Refill the Cooling System

  • Use a funnel to fill the radiator with Honda Type 2-compatible coolant.
  • Fill the coolant reservoir to the MAX line.
  • Reconnect the negative battery cable with a 10mm socket.
  • Start the engine and set the cabin heat to HOT with the fan on low.
  • Let the engine warm up while watching the temperature gauge.
  • Add coolant as air bubbles come out and the level drops.

  • ✅ Check around the water pump and radiator hoses for leaks.
  • ✅ Confirm the heater blows warm air after the engine warms up.
  • ✅ Make sure the temperature gauge stays normal during idle and a short road test.
  • ✅ After the first full heat cycle, let the engine cool and recheck coolant level.
  • ✅ Recheck the passenger front lug nut torque after a short drive.
  • ✅ If the engine runs rough, makes abnormal belt noise, or the timing marks were uncertain, do not drive it.
