🔧 Water Pump - Replacement
Replacing the water pump on your Tacoma means draining the coolant, removing the fan/shroud assembly, taking off the drive belt, and swapping the pump and gasket. This repair is important because a failing pump can cause coolant leaks, overheating, and engine damage.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 3-5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Let the engine cool completely before opening the cooling system. Hot coolant can cause serious burns.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable before working near the fan and belt area.
- The mechanical fan and shroud have sharp edges. Keep hands clear while removing them.
- Use the parking brake and work on level ground.
- Dispose of used coolant properly. It is toxic to people and pets.

📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Let the engine cool fully.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable.
- If the coolant is dirty or old, plan to refill with fresh Toyota-compatible pink coolant.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Drain the coolant
- Place a drain pan under the radiator drain area.
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver or pliers to open the radiator drain cock and drain the coolant.
- If equipped and needed for extra access, open the engine block drain as well.
- Close the drain once flow stops.
Step 2: Remove the fan shroud and fan assembly
- Use a 10mm socket to remove the shroud fasteners.
- Use pliers to release any hose clips or retainers attached to the shroud.
- Carefully lift the shroud upward and remove it with the fan assembly.
- Keep the radiator fins protected.
Step 3: Remove the serpentine belt
- Use a breaker bar on the belt tensioner to relieve tension.
- Slide the serpentine belt off the pulleys and remove it.
- If the belt is cracked or glazed, replace it now.
Step 4: Remove the fan and pulley hardware
- Use the correct metric socket to remove the fan clutch and pulley fasteners.
- Separate the fan/clutch assembly from the water pump area.
- Set the assembly aside carefully.
Step 5: Remove the water pump
- Use a 12mm socket to remove the water pump bolts.
- Break the pump loose gently if it is stuck.
- Remove the old pump and gasket from the engine.
- Clean the mating surface with a gasket scraper until it is smooth and dry.
- Do not scratch the aluminum surface.
Step 6: Install the new water pump
- Position the new gasket on the new pump.
- Install the new water pump by hand first so the bolts do not cross-thread.
- Use a 12mm socket to tighten the bolts evenly in a crisscross pattern.
- Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).
Step 7: Reinstall the fan assembly and belt
- Reinstall the fan/clutch assembly and secure it with the correct socket.
- Route the serpentine belt according to the belt diagram.
- Use the breaker bar on the tensioner again to slip the belt into place.
- Make sure the belt sits fully in every pulley groove.
Step 8: Reinstall the shroud and refill coolant
- Reinstall the fan shroud and tighten the 10mm fasteners.
- Use a funnel or spill-free coolant funnel to refill the cooling system.
- Fill with the correct coolant mix to the proper level.
- Reconnect the negative battery cable.
✅ After Repair
- Start the engine and let it idle with the radiator cap off if applicable.
- Watch for coolant leaks around the water pump and hose connections.
- Check that the heater blows warm air once the engine reaches operating temperature.
- Top off the coolant after the engine cools again.
- Recheck the belt for correct routing and alignment.
