📋 Before You Begin
- 🚗 Park your Canyon on level ground, set the parking brake, and chock the rear wheels.
- ❄️ Let the engine cool fully before opening the cooling system.
- 🔋 Use a 10mm socket to disconnect the negative battery cable and move it away from the battery post.
- 🧰 A serpentine belt tool is a long, low-profile handle used to rotate the belt tensioner so the belt can be removed safely.
- 🧼 A plastic gasket scraper removes old gasket material without gouging the aluminum sealing surface.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Raise and Secure the Front
- Use wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
- Use a floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift the front of your Canyon at the front frame crossmember.
- Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the frame rails, then lower the truck onto the stands.
- Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
Step 2: Remove the Lower Splash Shield
- Use a trim clip removal tool to remove the plastic push clips from the lower splash shield.
- Use a 10mm socket to remove any lower shield bolts.
- Lower the splash shield and set it aside.
- Keep clips in a cup.
Step 3: Drain the Coolant
- Place a drain pan 2-gallon minimum under the radiator drain area.
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver to open the radiator drain if equipped.
- If the drain is not accessible, use hose clamp pliers to loosen the lower radiator hose clamp and carefully slide the hose back enough to drain coolant.
- Remove the coolant reservoir cap slowly by hand to help the system drain.
- After draining, close the radiator drain or reinstall the lower radiator hose using hose clamp pliers.
Step 4: Remove the Intake Air Duct if Needed
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver to loosen the air duct clamps.
- Use a 10mm socket to remove any air duct retaining fasteners.
- Lift the duct out to improve access to the front of the engine.
Step 5: Remove the Serpentine Belt
- Take a quick photo of the belt routing before removal.
- Install the serpentine belt tool 3/8-inch drive into the belt tensioner.
- Rotate the tensioner to release belt tension.
- Slide the belt off one pulley, then slowly release the tensioner.
- Remove the belt from the engine.
- Do not let the tensioner snap back.
Step 6: Disconnect Hoses at the Water Pump
- Use hose clamp pliers to compress the hose clamps at the water pump hoses.
- Slide the clamps back on the hoses.
- Twist the hoses gently by hand to break them loose, then pull them off the water pump.
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver carefully only if needed to help loosen a stuck hose.
- Do not cut into the hose.
Step 7: Remove the Water Pump
- Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the water pump mounting bolts.
- Use a 3/8-inch drive extension set where extra reach is needed.
- Support the water pump by hand as the last bolt is removed.
- Pull the water pump straight off the engine.
- Remove and discard the old water pump gasket.
Step 8: Clean the Sealing Surface
- Use a plastic gasket scraper to remove old gasket material from the engine sealing surface.
- Wipe the area clean with a lint-free shop towel.
- Do not use a metal scraper or abrasive disc on the aluminum surface.
- Smooth and clean prevents leaks.
Step 9: Install the New Water Pump
- Place the new water pump gasket onto the new water pump.
- Position the water pump squarely against the engine.
- Start all bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Use a 10mm socket to snug the bolts evenly in a crisscross pattern.
- Use a 3/8-inch drive inch-pound torque wrench to tighten the water pump bolts to Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).
Step 10: Reconnect the Water Pump Hoses
- Push each coolant hose fully onto its water pump fitting by hand.
- Use hose clamp pliers to move each clamp back to its original position.
- Make sure each clamp sits behind the raised bead on the fitting.
Step 11: Install the Serpentine Belt
- Route the serpentine belt around the pulleys using your photo as a guide.
- Use the serpentine belt tool 3/8-inch drive to rotate the tensioner.
- Slip the belt over the final pulley, then slowly release the tensioner.
- Check that the belt ribs sit correctly in every pulley groove.
- Misaligned belts shred quickly.
Step 12: Reinstall the Intake Air Duct
- Set the intake air duct back into position.
- Use a 10mm socket to reinstall any retaining fasteners.
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver to tighten the air duct clamps until snug.
Step 13: Reinstall the Lower Splash Shield
- Lift the lower splash shield into place.
- Use a trim clip removal tool by hand to reinstall the plastic push clips.
- Use a 10mm socket to reinstall any shield bolts.
- Tighten small shield bolts snug only; do not overtighten plastic retainers.
Step 14: Refill the Cooling System
- Remove the coolant reservoir cap by hand.
- Install a coolant funnel spill-free kit at the reservoir opening.
- Add Dex-Cool compatible 50/50 coolant until the reservoir reaches the cold fill mark.
- Leave some coolant in the funnel so air can burp out during warm-up.
Step 15: Reconnect the Battery and Bleed Air
- Use a 10mm socket to reconnect the negative battery cable.
- Start the engine and let it idle with the spill-free funnel installed.
- Set the heater to full hot and blower to low using the climate controls.
- Watch for air bubbles in the funnel as the engine warms up.
- When the upper radiator hose becomes hot and bubbles slow down, top off coolant as needed.
- Install the coolant reservoir cap by hand.
Step 16: Lower the Vehicle
- Use a floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift the front slightly off the jack stands.
- Remove the jack stands rated 3-ton minimum.
- Lower your Canyon slowly to the ground.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Let the engine reach normal operating temperature and check for leaks around the water pump and hoses.
- ✅ Watch the temperature gauge. It should stay in the normal range.
- ✅ After the first full heat cycle, let the engine cool completely and recheck coolant level at the reservoir.
- ✅ Add Dex-Cool compatible 50/50 coolant to the cold fill mark if needed.
- ✅ Recheck the serpentine belt to confirm it is centered on all pulleys.
- ✅ Dispose of old coolant at an approved recycling or service facility.
