🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Raise the Front of the Truck
- Use a floor jack rated 2-ton minimum to lift the front of your Colorado at the front frame lift point.
- Place jack stands rated 2-ton minimum under the frame rails.
- Lower the truck gently onto the jack stands.
- Keep the wheel chocks in place at the rear wheels.
- Give the truck a gentle shake.
Step 2: Remove the Front Lower Splash Shield
- Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
- Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the lower splash shield fasteners.
- Lower the shield and set it aside.
- Keep the bolts together so they do not get lost.
Step 3: Drain the Coolant
- Place a drain pan 2-gallon minimum under the radiator drain area.
- Slowly remove the coolant reservoir cap by hand to release any leftover pressure.
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver if needed to open the radiator drain plug.
- Let the coolant drain until the flow slows to a drip.
- Close the radiator drain plug by hand, then snug it lightly with the flat-blade screwdriver if applicable.
- Do not overtighten the plastic drain plug.
Step 4: Note the Serpentine Belt Routing
- Use your phone to take a clear picture of the belt path before removal.
- The serpentine belt is the long rubber belt that drives the alternator, water pump, and other accessories.
- Look for a belt routing decal under the hood and compare it to your photo.
Step 5: Remove the Serpentine Belt
- Place the serpentine belt tool on the belt tensioner.
- Rotate the tensioner to release belt tension.
- Slide the belt off the nearest smooth pulley by hand.
- Slowly release the tensioner back to its resting position.
- Remove the belt from the engine bay.
- Never let the tensioner snap back.
Step 6: Remove Parts Blocking the Water Pump
- Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove any small bracket or shield blocking water pump access.
- Use hose clamp pliers to move any hose clamps that block the pump area.
- Twist hoses gently by hand before pulling them off.
- If a hose is stuck, use a flat-blade screwdriver carefully at the hose edge. Do not gouge the metal sealing surface.
Step 7: Remove the Old Water Pump
- Place shop towels under the pump area to catch coolant.
- Use a 10mm socket or 13mm socket with a 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the water pump mounting bolts.
- Remove the bolts in a crisscross pattern so the pump comes off evenly.
- Pull the water pump straight away from the engine.
- More coolant may spill, so keep the drain pan in position.
Step 8: Clean the Sealing Surface
- Use a plastic gasket scraper to remove old gasket material from the engine surface.
- Wipe the area with shop towels until it is clean and dry.
- Do not use a metal scraper because it can scratch the aluminum sealing surface.
- Make sure no old gasket pieces fall into the coolant passage.
- Clean metal seals best.
Step 9: Install the New Water Pump
- Install the new water pump gasket or seal onto the new water pump.
- Hold the water pump squarely against the engine by hand.
- Start all mounting bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Use a 10mm socket or 13mm socket to snug the bolts evenly in a crisscross pattern.
- Use a torque wrench rated 5-80 ft-lbs to tighten the water pump bolts to Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).
- If your replacement pump includes separate pulley bolts, use a 10mm socket and torque wrench to tighten pulley bolts to Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).
Step 10: Reinstall Hoses and Brackets
- Slide coolant hoses fully onto their fittings by hand.
- Use hose clamp pliers to move the clamps back to their original positions.
- Use a 10mm socket to reinstall any removed brackets or shields.
- Tighten small bracket bolts snugly with the 3/8-inch drive ratchet.
- Do not overtighten small bolts into aluminum parts.
Step 11: Install the Serpentine Belt
- Route the new serpentine belt around the pulleys using your photo or the under-hood diagram.
- Leave the easiest smooth pulley for last.
- Use the serpentine belt tool to rotate the belt tensioner.
- Slip the belt over the last pulley by hand.
- Slowly release the tensioner.
- Check every pulley groove with a flashlight and make sure the belt sits straight.
Step 12: Reinstall the Lower Splash Shield
- Lift the splash shield back into position.
- Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to install the fasteners.
- Tighten the fasteners snugly.
Step 13: Lower the Truck
- Use the floor jack rated 2-ton minimum to lift the front slightly off the jack stands.
- Remove the jack stands.
- Lower your Colorado slowly to the ground.
Step 14: Refill the Cooling System
- Use a funnel with narrow spout to fill the coolant reservoir with Dex-Cool compatible 50/50 premix coolant.
- Fill to the cold fill mark on the reservoir.
- Reconnect the negative battery cable with a 10mm socket.
- Start the engine and set the heater to full hot with the fan on low.
- Let the engine idle while watching the coolant level.
- Add coolant as the level drops.
- Install the coolant reservoir cap once the level stabilizes.
Step 15: Bleed Air and Check Operation
