🔧 Sierra 1500 - Water Pump Replacement
Your Sierra’s water pump circulates coolant through the engine and radiator. If it’s leaking (coolant drip from the pump/weep hole) or the bearing is noisy, replacement is the correct fix to prevent overheating.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-4 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Work on a fully cool engine—hot coolant can cause severe burns.
- ⚠️ Disconnect the negative battery cable—your Sierra’s electric cooling fans can turn on unexpectedly.
- ⚠️ Support the truck safely if you raise it—use jack stands, never only a jack.
- ⚠️ Catch and dispose of coolant properly—pets are attracted to it and it’s toxic.
- ⚠️ Keep coolant off the serpentine belt—coolant can make the belt slip.

📋 Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and chock the rear wheels.
- 🔋 Disconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket.
- 🧊 Make sure the engine is completely cool (upper radiator hose should feel cool).
- 📝 Take a quick photo of the belt routing sticker (or draw the routing) before removing the belt.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the intake duct (for access)
- Use an 8mm socket or flat-blade screwdriver to loosen the hose clamps on the air intake duct.
- Unclip any small hoses/sensors from the duct by hand, then lift the duct out.
Step 2: Drain the coolant
- Place a drain pan under the radiator drain (petcock).
- Open the drain using a flat-blade screwdriver (some drains are hand-turn; don’t force it).
- Remove the surge tank cap slowly (only when cool) to help it drain faster.
Step 3: Remove the upper fan shroud / fan assembly (if equipped as a removable module)
- Disconnect the cooling fan electrical connectors by hand.
- Remove shroud fasteners using a 10mm socket and a trim clip remover as needed.
- Lift the shroud/fan assembly straight up and out carefully.
- If it resists, recheck hidden clips/bolts.
Step 4: Release serpentine belt tension and remove the belt
- Install the serpentine belt tool on the belt tensioner and rotate it to relieve tension. (A belt tensioner is a spring-loaded pulley that keeps the belt tight.)
- Slide the belt off the water pump pulley first, then remove it from the rest of the pulleys.
Step 5: Remove coolant hoses from the water pump
- Use pliers (hose clamp pliers) to compress the hose clamps and slide them back on the hose.
- Twist the hose gently to break it loose, then pull it off the water pump.
- Use shop towels to catch remaining coolant.
Step 6: Remove the water pump
- Remove the water pump mounting bolts using a 10mm socket and extensions as needed.
- Pull the water pump straight forward and out.
- Remove old gasket material from the engine surface using a plastic gasket scraper.
- Do not gouge the aluminum sealing surface.
Step 7: Install the new water pump and gaskets
- Install the new gaskets/seals onto the new pump (match orientation exactly).
- Position the pump on the engine and start all bolts by hand to avoid cross-threading.
- Tighten bolts evenly in a crisscross pattern using a torque wrench: Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).
Step 8: Reinstall hoses, belt, and fan/shroud
- Reinstall coolant hoses and position clamps using hose clamp pliers.
- Route the serpentine belt correctly and apply tension using the serpentine belt tool.
- Reinstall the fan/shroud assembly and bolts using a 10mm socket.
- Reconnect the fan electrical connectors by hand until they click.
- Reinstall the intake duct and tighten clamps using an 8mm socket or flat-blade screwdriver.
Step 9: Refill and bleed the cooling system
- Close the radiator drain.
- Refill the surge tank using a funnel with Dex-Cool coolant (50/50 premix) to the FULL COLD line.
- If equipped with a coolant air bleed screw: open it using the appropriate socket, fill until coolant flows without bubbles, then close it snugly.
- Reconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket.
- Start the engine and set HVAC to heat (full hot) and low fan speed.
- Let it idle until warm, watching the temperature gauge and checking for leaks.
- Shut off, let it cool fully, then top off to FULL COLD.
✅ After Repair
- 🔎 Check for leaks around the water pump and hose connections with the engine running and again after a full cool-down.
- 🌡️ Road test 10-15 minutes, then recheck coolant level after it cools.
- 🧼 Clean any spilled coolant off pulleys/belt using shop towels.
- 🛠️ If the belt chirps/squeals, recheck belt routing and make sure coolant didn’t get on it.
