📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Tucson on level ground and let the engine cool fully.
  • Set the parking brake and place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • Open the hood and remove the negative battery cable with a 10mm socket.
  • If raising the front, use a floor jack rated 2-ton minimum and place the vehicle securely on jack stands rated 2-ton minimum.
  • A serpentine belt is the single outer belt that drives accessories like the alternator and water pump.
  • A torque wrench tightens bolts to an exact tightness so parts seal without cracking.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the Lower Engine Shield

  • Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
  • Use a 10mm socket and plastic trim clip remover to remove the lower splash shield fasteners.
  • Set the shield and fasteners aside in order so they go back in the same locations.
  • Take a photo first.

Step 2: Drain the Coolant

  • Place a drain pan 2-gallon minimum under the radiator drain area.
  • Slowly remove the coolant reservoir cap by hand only after the engine is cold.
  • Open the radiator drain with a flat-blade screwdriver if needed, and let the coolant drain fully.
  • If the radiator drain is difficult to access, remove the lower radiator hose clamp carefully with a flat-blade screwdriver and drain from the hose.
  • Close the drain once coolant flow stops.

Step 3: Remove the Accessory Drive Belt

  • Before removing the belt, take a clear photo of the belt routing.
  • Use a serpentine belt tool (specialty) or 17mm socket on the belt tensioner to rotate the tensioner and release belt tension.
  • Slide the belt off one pulley, then slowly release the tensioner.
  • Remove the belt from the engine bay.
  • Do not let the tensioner snap back.

Step 4: Remove Components Blocking the Water Pump

  • Use a 10mm socket and 12mm socket to remove any small brackets or covers blocking access to the water pump.
  • If the coolant hose is attached to the pump area, use a flat-blade screwdriver to loosen the hose clamp and twist the hose gently to break it free.
  • Do not pry hard on aluminum parts. Aluminum cracks easier than steel.

Step 5: Remove the Water Pump Pulley

  • Use a 10mm socket or 12mm socket to loosen the water pump pulley bolts.
  • If the pulley turns, hold the pulley by hand with a shop towel and loosen the bolts a little at a time in a crisscross pattern.
  • Remove the pulley and set it aside.

Step 6: Remove the Old Water Pump

  • Place the drain pan 2-gallon minimum under the pump because more coolant may spill.
  • Use a 10mm socket and 12mm socket to remove the water pump mounting bolts.
  • Note bolt locations. Some bolts may be different lengths.
  • Pull the water pump straight away from the engine.
  • If it is stuck, tap gently by hand or wiggle it. Do not gouge the sealing surface.

Step 7: Clean the Sealing Surface

  • Use a plastic gasket scraper to clean old gasket material from the engine sealing surface.
  • Wipe the area clean with shop towels.
  • Do not use metal scrapers or sanding discs. They can damage the aluminum surface and cause leaks.
  • The sealing surface is the flat area where the gasket sits and prevents coolant leaks.

Step 8: Install the New Water Pump

  • Install the new water pump gasket or O-ring onto the new water pump.
  • Position the new pump on the engine by hand.
  • Start all bolts by hand first to prevent cross-threading.
  • Use a 10mm socket or 12mm socket to snug the bolts in a crisscross pattern.
  • Use a torque wrench 5-80 ft-lb range to tighten the water pump bolts to Torque to 18-22 Nm (13-16 ft-lbs).
  • Even tightening prevents leaks.

Step 9: Reinstall the Water Pump Pulley

  • Place the pulley back onto the water pump hub.
  • Start the pulley bolts by hand.
  • Use a 10mm socket or 12mm socket to snug the bolts evenly.
  • Use a torque wrench 5-80 ft-lb range to tighten the pulley bolts to Torque to 8-12 Nm (71-106 in-lbs).

Step 10: Reinstall Hoses and Brackets

  • Use a flat-blade screwdriver to reinstall any hose clamps removed earlier.
  • Use a 10mm socket and 12mm socket to reinstall brackets and covers.
  • Tighten small bracket bolts to Torque to 8-12 Nm (71-106 in-lbs) unless a larger mounting bolt is used.

Step 11: Reinstall the Accessory Drive Belt

  • Route the belt around the pulleys using your photo as a guide.
  • Use the serpentine belt tool (specialty) or 17mm socket to rotate the tensioner.
  • Slide the belt fully onto the final pulley, then slowly release the tensioner.
  • Check every pulley groove by sight and touch. The belt must sit straight in all grooves.
  • Misaligned belts squeal or shred.

Step 12: Refill the Cooling System

  • Install a coolant funnel kit spill-free (specialty) on the coolant fill neck or reservoir opening.
  • Fill with Hyundai-compatible long-life coolant concentrate or premix.
  • If using concentrate, mix it 50/50 with distilled water before adding.
  • Fill slowly until the coolant level stays steady.

Step 13: Bleed Air from the Cooling System

  • Reconnect the negative battery cable with a 10mm socket.
  • Start the engine and set the cabin heater to full hot with the fan on low.
  • Let the engine idle while watching the coolant level in the coolant funnel kit spill-free (specialty).
  • Add coolant as air bubbles come out and the level drops.
  • When the radiator fans cycle on and the upper radiator hose gets hot, most air is out.
  • Shut the engine off and let it cool completely.

Step 14: Reinstall the Lower Engine Shield

  • Use a 10mm socket and plastic trim clip remover to reinstall the lower splash shield fasteners.
  • Make sure no tools or towels are left in the engine bay.

  • ✅ Recheck coolant level after the engine cools fully and top off as needed.
  • ✅ Start your Tucson and look around the water pump, hoses, and drain area for leaks.
  • ✅ Watch the temperature gauge during the first drive. Stop if it rises above normal.
  • ✅ After one or two heat cycles, recheck the coolant level again.
  • ✅ Dispose of old coolant at a proper recycling center or parts store that accepts used coolant.
