📋 Before You Begin
- 📍 Park your Tucson on firm, level ground. Select Park, apply the parking brake, and allow the engine to cool fully.
- 🧊 Use Hyundai-compatible phosphate-based coolant. Do not choose coolant only by color or mix incompatible coolant types.
- 📸 Photograph the accessory-belt routing before removal. Also use the routing label under the hood if present.
- 🔧 A belt tensioner is the spring-loaded arm that keeps the accessory belt tight. It must be rotated carefully against spring pressure.
- 🪣 Position the drain pan before opening the radiator drain valve.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Raise and Secure the Vehicle
- Place the wheel chocks behind both rear wheels.
- Use the 21mm lug-nut socket and 1/2-inch-drive breaker bar to loosen the right-front lug nuts approximately one-half turn.
- Raise the right-front lifting point with the floor jack rated 2-ton minimum.
- Place a jack stand rated 2-ton minimum beneath the approved body support point, then lower your Tucson onto it.
- Remove the lug nuts with the 21mm lug-nut socket and remove the wheel.
Step 2: Remove the Right Splash Shield
- Wear safety glasses before working underneath the vehicle.
- Use the 10mm socket and 3/8-inch-drive ratchet to remove the shield screws.
- Use the flat-blade trim-clip tool to lift the centers of the plastic retainers, then remove the retainers.
- Move the right splash shield aside to expose the belt and water-pump area.
Step 3: Drain the Coolant
- Place the 12-liter drain pan beneath the radiator drain valve.
- Slowly remove the radiator cap by hand only after confirming the engine and upper radiator hose are cold.
- Open the plastic radiator drain valve by hand. Do not force it with pliers.
- Allow the coolant to drain completely, then close the drain valve snugly by hand.
- Loosen the cap slowly to release residual pressure.
Step 4: Loosen the Water-Pump Pulley Bolts
- Leave the accessory belt installed temporarily so it helps hold the pulley.
- Use the 10mm socket, 150mm socket extension, and 3/8-inch-drive ratchet to loosen each water-pump pulley bolt approximately one turn.
- Do not remove the bolts yet.
Step 5: Remove the Accessory Drive Belt
- Confirm the belt routing using your photograph or the under-hood routing label.
- Fit the 17mm socket and 1/2-inch-drive breaker bar onto the automatic belt tensioner.
- Rotate the tensioner slowly against spring pressure until the belt becomes loose.
- Slide the belt off the water-pump pulley, then slowly release the tensioner.
- Remove the belt and inspect it. Replace it if it is cracked, shiny, frayed, stretched, or soaked with coolant.
- Keep fingers clear of the spring-loaded tensioner.
Step 6: Remove the Water-Pump Pulley
- Use the 10mm socket and 3/8-inch-drive ratchet to remove the loosened pulley bolts.
- Remove the pulley from the pump hub. If it sticks, move it gently by hand rather than prying against the engine.
Step 7: Remove the Old Water Pump
- Reposition the 12-liter drain pan beneath the pump because additional coolant will escape.
- Use the 12mm socket, 150mm socket extension, and 3/8-inch-drive ratchet to remove the water-pump mounting bolts.
- Record each bolt position as it is removed because bolt lengths may differ.
- Pull the pump straight away from the engine. Tap it gently by hand if the gasket is stuck.
- Do not pry between the pump and aluminum sealing surface with a metal screwdriver.
Step 8: Clean the Sealing Surface
- Use the plastic gasket scraper to remove all old gasket material without scratching the aluminum.
- Use the soft nylon cleaning brush and clean shop towels to clean the sealing surface and bolt holes.
- Keep debris out of the open coolant passages.
- Confirm the surface is clean, dry, and free of deep corrosion.
- Never use abrasive power tools on aluminum.
Step 9: Install the New Water Pump
- Compare the new and old pumps. Confirm that the mounting holes, pulley hub, and coolant passages match.
- Position the new water pump gasket exactly as supplied. Do not add sealant unless the gasket manufacturer specifically requires it.
- Hold the pump squarely against the engine and install every bolt by hand to prevent cross-threading.
- Use the 12mm socket and 3/8-inch-drive torque wrench rated 5-80 Nm to tighten the bolts gradually in a crisscross pattern.
- Torque the water-pump mounting bolts to 19.6-24.5 Nm (14-18 ft-lbs).
Step 10: Install the Pulley and Belt
- Place the pulley onto the pump hub and start all bolts by hand.
- Use the 10mm socket and 3/8-inch-drive ratchet to tighten the pulley bolts lightly and evenly.
- Route the accessory belt around every pulley except the easiest smooth pulley, following the routing photograph or label.
- Use the 17mm socket and 1/2-inch-drive breaker bar to rotate the tensioner, slide the belt onto the final pulley, and release the tensioner slowly.
- Check that every belt rib sits fully inside the grooved pulleys.
- Use the 10mm socket and 3/8-inch-drive torque wrench rated 5-80 Nm to tighten the pump-pulley bolts.
- Torque the water-pump pulley bolts to 9.8-11.8 Nm (87-104 in-lbs).
Step 11: Refill and Bleed the Cooling System
- Confirm the radiator drain valve is closed.
- Install the coolant funnel with adapter set at the radiator filler neck.
- Slowly add Hyundai-compatible phosphate-based coolant premix until the radiator remains full.
- Fill the coolant reservoir to the “F” or “MAX” line.
- Set the cabin temperature to maximum heat and the blower to low.
- Start the engine and allow it to idle with the funnel installed. Add coolant as the level drops.
- Watch the temperature gauge continuously. Shut the engine off immediately if it rises above normal.
- When the upper radiator hose becomes hot and air bubbles stop, briefly raise engine speed to approximately 2,000 rpm several times.
- Allow the cooling fan to cycle while checking for leaks around the new pump.
- Shut the engine off, let it cool completely, top off the radiator and reservoir, then install the radiator cap securely.
Step 12: Reassemble the Wheel Well
- Use the flat-blade trim-clip tool to reinstall serviceable shield retainers.
- Use the 10mm socket and 3/8-inch-drive ratchet to reinstall the splash-shield screws snugly without stripping the plastic.
- Install the right-front wheel and hand-start all lug nuts.
- Raise your Tucson slightly with the floor jack rated 2-ton minimum, remove the jack stand, and lower the vehicle.
- Use the 21mm lug-nut socket and 1/2-inch-drive torque wrench rated 40-150 Nm to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern.
- Torque the wheel lug nuts to 88-107 Nm (65-79 ft-lbs).
✅ After Repair
- 🔍 Inspect the pump, radiator drain valve, and nearby hoses for leaks with the engine idling.
- 🌡️ Confirm the temperature gauge remains at its normal position and the cabin heater produces steady heat.
- 👂 Listen for belt squealing, scraping, or grinding. Shut the engine off if any abnormal sound occurs.
- 🧊 After a complete cool-down, recheck the radiator and reservoir levels. Add compatible premixed coolant if needed.
- 🛣️ Take a short test drive, allow the engine to cool again, and perform one final leak and coolant-level inspection.
