🔧 Focus - Water Pump Replacement

The water pump circulates coolant through your Focus to keep the engine from overheating. Replacing it means draining the cooling system, removing the accessory drive belt, replacing the pump and gasket, then refilling and bleeding the coolant system.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2.5-4 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Only work on the cooling system when the engine is completely cold. Hot coolant can cause severe burns.
  • ⚠️ Disconnect the negative battery cable before working near the belt and pulley area.
  • ⚠️ Keep coolant away from pets and children. It is poisonous and has a sweet smell.
  • ⚠️ Support your Focus securely with jack stands if you raise the front of the car. Never rely on a floor jack alone.
  • ⚠️ Use the correct coolant type. Mixing incompatible coolants can damage the cooling system.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 13mm socket
  • 15mm wrench
  • 3/8-inch drive ratchet
  • 3/8-inch drive extension
  • Torque wrench 5-50 Nm
  • Flat-blade screwdriver
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • Drain pan 2-gallon minimum
  • Coolant funnel kit
  • Floor jack rated 2-ton minimum
  • Jack stands rated 2-ton minimum
  • Wheel chocks
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Shop towels
  • Plastic gasket scraper

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine water pump - Qty: 1
  • Water pump gasket or seal - Qty: 1
  • Engine coolant, orange OAT-compatible 50/50 premix - Qty: 2 gallons
  • Accessory drive belt - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🚗 Park your Focus on level ground and let the engine cool fully.
  • 🧱 Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • 🔋 Use a 10mm socket to disconnect the negative battery cable. The negative cable is the black cable marked “-”.
  • 🧊 Remove the coolant reservoir cap only when the engine is cold. This lets the coolant drain more smoothly.
  • 📌 A serpentine belt is the long rubber belt that drives accessories like the alternator and water pump.
  • 📌 A torque wrench tightens bolts to an exact tightness so they do not loosen or break.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise and Secure the Front

  • Use the floor jack rated 2-ton minimum to lift the front of your Focus at the proper front jacking point.
  • Place jack stands rated 2-ton minimum under the approved support points.
  • Gently lower the car onto the jack stands and lightly shake the vehicle to confirm it is stable.
  • Never crawl under a car on a jack.

Step 2: Remove the Lower Splash Shield

  • Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
  • Use a trim clip removal tool to remove plastic push clips from the lower splash shield.
  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove any splash shield screws or bolts.
  • Set the splash shield and fasteners aside in order.

Step 3: Drain the Coolant

  • Place a drain pan 2-gallon minimum under the radiator drain area.
  • Use a flat-blade screwdriver to carefully open the radiator drain valve if equipped.
  • If access to the drain valve is poor, use pliers only if necessary and turn gently to avoid breaking the plastic valve.
  • Let the coolant drain fully into the pan.
  • Close the drain valve by hand, then snug gently with the flat-blade screwdriver if needed.
  • Do not overtighten plastic drain valves.

Step 4: Release the Accessory Drive Belt Tension

  • Use a 15mm wrench on the belt tensioner. The tensioner is a spring-loaded arm that keeps the belt tight.
  • Rotate the tensioner to relieve belt tension.
  • Slide the accessory drive belt off the water pump pulley.
  • Slowly release the tensioner with the 15mm wrench.
  • If you are replacing the belt, remove it completely and compare its routing before removal.

Step 5: Remove the Water Pump Pulley

  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to loosen the water pump pulley bolts.
  • If the pulley turns, hold it steady by pressing on the belt or using shop towels for grip.
  • Remove the pulley bolts and pull the pulley off the water pump.
  • Keep the bolts together so they go back in the same location.

Step 6: Remove the Old Water Pump

  • Place the drain pan 2-gallon minimum under the water pump area because more coolant will spill.
  • Use a 10mm socket, 3/8-inch drive ratchet, and 3/8-inch drive extension to remove the water pump mounting bolts.
  • Pull the water pump straight away from the engine.
  • If it is stuck, tap gently by hand. Do not pry hard against aluminum sealing surfaces.
  • Remove the old gasket or seal.

Step 7: Clean the Sealing Surface

  • Use a plastic gasket scraper to clean the engine-side sealing surface.
  • Use shop towels to wipe away old coolant and debris.
  • Do not use a metal scraper. It can gouge the aluminum and cause leaks.
  • Make sure the surface is clean, flat, and dry before installing the new pump.

Step 8: Install the New Water Pump

  • Install the new water pump gasket or seal onto the new water pump.
  • Position the water pump against the engine by hand.
  • Start all water pump bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to snug the bolts evenly in a crisscross pattern.
  • Use a torque wrench 5-50 Nm with a 10mm socket to tighten the water pump bolts to Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).
  • Even tightening helps prevent leaks.

Step 9: Reinstall the Water Pump Pulley

  • Place the pulley onto the water pump hub.
  • Start the pulley bolts by hand.
  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to snug the bolts.
  • Use a torque wrench 5-50 Nm with a 10mm socket to tighten the pulley bolts to Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).

Step 10: Reinstall the Accessory Drive Belt

  • Route the accessory drive belt around the pulleys exactly as it was before removal.
  • Use a 15mm wrench to rotate the belt tensioner.
  • Slip the belt over the final pulley, then slowly release the tensioner.
  • Check that the belt ribs sit correctly in every pulley groove.
  • A misrouted belt can jump off quickly.

Step 11: Refill the Cooling System

  • Install a coolant funnel kit into the coolant reservoir opening.
  • Pour orange OAT-compatible 50/50 premix coolant into the reservoir until it reaches the MAX line.
  • Keep the drain pan under the engine while filling and check around the new water pump for leaks.

Step 12: Bleed Air from the Cooling System

  • Use a 10mm socket to reconnect the negative battery cable.
  • Start the engine and set the heater to full hot with the blower on low.
  • Let the engine idle while watching the coolant level in the funnel.
  • Add orange OAT-compatible 50/50 premix coolant as the level drops.
  • Allow the engine to reach normal operating temperature.
  • Watch for steady heat from the vents and no large bubbles in the funnel.
  • Shut the engine off and let it cool completely.
  • Remove the coolant funnel kit and install the coolant reservoir cap.

Step 13: Reinstall the Lower Splash Shield

  • Use a trim clip removal tool to reinstall the plastic push clips.
  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to reinstall the splash shield screws or bolts.
  • Do not overtighten plastic or small splash shield fasteners.

Step 14: Lower the Vehicle

  • Use the floor jack rated 2-ton minimum to lift the vehicle slightly off the jack stands.
  • Remove the jack stands rated 2-ton minimum.
  • Lower your Focus slowly to the ground.
  • Remove the wheel chocks.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Start the engine and inspect the water pump area for coolant leaks.
  • ✅ Watch the temperature gauge during the first drive. Stop immediately if it overheats.
  • ✅ After the engine cools completely, recheck the coolant level and top off to the MAX line if needed.
  • ✅ Recheck for leaks again after one full heat cycle and after the next short drive.
  • ✅ Dispose of used coolant properly. Do not pour it on the ground or into a drain.
