Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Disconnect the Battery

- Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to loosen the negative battery-terminal clamp.
- Lift the clamp from the battery post and isolate it so it cannot spring back into contact.
Step 2: Raise the Front Safely
- Place the wheel chocks securely behind the rear tires.
- Use the 3-ton floor jack beneath the front crossmember, then support the F-150 on 3-ton jack stands at the frame lifting points.
- Lower the floor jack until the vehicle rests securely on the stands. Leave the jack lightly touching the crossmember as backup support.
Step 3: Drain the Coolant
- Slowly loosen the coolant reservoir cap by hand only after confirming the engine is completely cold.

Step 4: Remove the Air-Intake Duct

- Cover the throttle opening with a clean towel.
Step 5: Remove the Electric Cooling-Fan Assembly
- Use the plastic trim-removal tool to release the fan wiring harness clips.
- Press the locking tab by hand and unplug the electric-fan connector. Do not pull on the wires.
- Use an 8mm or 10mm socket, as fitted, with the ratchet and extension to remove the upper fan-shroud retaining bolts.
- Release any lower locating tabs, then carefully lift the fan and shroud assembly straight upward and out.
- Keep the assembly clear of the radiator fins, which bend easily.
Step 6: Loosen the Water-Pump Pulley Bolts
- Before removing the belt, use a 10mm socket and ratchet to loosen each water-pump pulley bolt approximately one turn.
- Leave the bolts installed. Belt tension helps prevent the pulley from rotating during loosening.
Step 7: Remove the Accessory Drive Belt
- Confirm the belt-routing photograph or underhood diagram is available.
- Fit a 15mm six-point socket and breaker bar onto the belt tensioner.
- Rotate the tensioner against spring pressure and slide the belt off the water-pump pulley.
- Slowly release the tensioner. Remove the belt and inspect it for cracks, glazing, missing ribs, or coolant contamination.
- Never let the spring-loaded tensioner snap back.
Step 8: Remove the Water-Pump Pulley
- Use the 10mm socket and ratchet to remove the previously loosened pulley bolts.
- Remove the pulley from the water-pump hub and place it on a clean surface.
Step 9: Disconnect the Water-Pump Coolant Connection
- Reposition the drain pan beneath the front of the engine.
- If a hose is attached directly to the pump, use hose-clamp pliers to compress and move its spring clamp away from the fitting.
- Twist the hose gently by hand to break the seal, then remove it. Do not pry against a plastic fitting.
- If the fitted pump uses a bolted coolant tube, use an 8mm socket and ratchet to remove its retaining fastener, then pull the tube straight out.
Step 10: Remove the Old Water Pump
- Use an 8mm socket, extension, and ratchet to remove the water-pump mounting bolts.
- Note each bolt’s original location because bolt lengths may differ.
- Support the pump by hand and pull it straight away from the engine. Catch the remaining coolant in the drain pan.
- Do not pry against the aluminum timing cover or sealing surface.
Step 11: Clean and Inspect the Mounting Surface
- Use the plastic gasket scraper to remove gasket residue without gouging the aluminum surface.
- Use the nylon cleaning brush and shop towels to clean the mating surface and bolt holes.

- Do not use a metal scraper or abrasive power tool on the aluminum sealing surface.
Step 12: Install the New Water Pump
- Fit the new dry gasket or molded seal to the replacement pump. Do not add silicone unless the pump manufacturer specifically requires it.
- Position the pump squarely against the engine and start every mounting bolt by hand.
- Use the 8mm socket and ratchet to snug the bolts evenly in a crisscross pattern.
- Use the inch-pound torque wrench and 8mm socket to tighten the water-pump bolts to Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).
- Do not overtighten the bolts; the pump mounts to an aluminum cover.
Step 13: Reconnect the Coolant Connection
- Lubricate a replacement O-ring with clean premixed coolant and install it by hand if the coolant tube was removed.
- Push the tube or hose fully onto the water-pump connection by hand.
- Use hose-clamp pliers to return the spring clamp to its original position.
- If equipped with a tube-retaining bolt, install it with the 8mm socket and tighten it to Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).
Step 14: Install the Pulley and Belt
- Place the pulley onto the pump hub and start all pulley bolts by hand.

- Use the 15mm socket and breaker bar to rotate the tensioner, slide the belt over the final pulley, and release the tensioner slowly.
- Check with a flashlight that every belt rib is seated correctly in every grooved pulley.
- Hold the pulley from turning with the installed belt and use the torque wrench with the 10mm socket to tighten the pulley bolts to Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).
Step 15: Reinstall the Cooling-Fan Assembly
- Lower the fan and shroud assembly into its lower locating points without touching the radiator core.
- Install the upper bolts with the correct 8mm or 10mm socket and ratchet.
- Use the inch-pound torque wrench to tighten the fan-shroud bolts to Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).
- Reconnect the electric-fan connector by hand until its lock clicks, then secure the harness clips with the trim-removal tool.
Step 16: Reinstall the Air-Intake Duct
- Remove the towel from the throttle opening and inspect the duct for loose objects.
- Install the duct fully onto the throttle body and air-cleaner housing.
- Reconnect the breather fitting by hand.
- Use the 8mm socket and ratchet to tighten the duct clamps until secure. Do not crush the plastic duct.
Step 17: Refill and Bleed the Cooling System
- Confirm the radiator drain valve is closed and install the spill-free funnel on the coolant reservoir.
- Pour the properly mixed 50/50 Ford-specification coolant slowly into the reservoir until it reaches the cold-fill range.
- Use the funnel to allow trapped air to escape for several minutes.
- Reconnect the negative battery cable with the 10mm socket and torque wrench. Torque to 7 Nm (62 in-lbs).
- Start the engine with the reservoir funnel installed. Set the heater to maximum heat and the blower to low.
- Watch the coolant level and add premixed coolant as air bubbles escape. Keep hands and tools away from the belt and electric fan.
- Allow the engine to reach operating temperature. Confirm warm air comes from the vents and the upper radiator hose becomes hot.
- Switch the engine off, allow it to cool completely, then adjust the reservoir to the cold-fill mark.
Step 18: Pressure-Test the Repair
- With the engine cold, install the cooling-system pressure tester and Ford reservoir adapter.
- Pump the tester only to the pressure printed on the reservoir cap; do not exceed the cap rating.
