🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Raise and Secure the Front
- Use the floor jack rated 2-ton minimum to lift the front of the Corolla at the front center jacking point.
- Place jack stands rated 2-ton minimum under the front side support points.
- Gently lower the vehicle onto the jack stands.
- Use safety glasses and nitrile gloves before working underneath.
- Shake gently to confirm stability.
Step 2: Remove the Lower Engine Cover
- Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the lower splash shield fasteners.
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver to release any plastic clips.
- Set the shield and fasteners aside in order.
Step 3: Drain the Engine Coolant
- Place the drain pan 2-gallon minimum under the radiator drain area.
- Slowly remove the radiator cap by hand only after the engine is completely cool.
- Use pliers carefully if needed to open the radiator drain cock.
- Let the coolant drain into the pan.
- Close the drain cock by hand when the coolant flow stops. Do not overtighten.
- Cool engine only. No shortcuts.
Step 4: Remove the Serpentine Drive Belt
- Look at the belt routing before removal. Take a photo with your phone.
- Use a 14mm box-end wrench on the belt tensioner pulley bolt.
- Rotate the tensioner slowly to release belt tension.
- Slide the belt off the water pump pulley first, then remove it from the other pulleys.
- A belt tensioner is a spring-loaded arm that keeps the belt tight.
- Inspect the belt. Replace it if cracked, glazed, noisy, or coolant-soaked.
Step 5: Remove the Water Pump Pulley
- Use a 10mm socket and ratchet to loosen the water pump pulley bolts.
- If the pulley spins, hold it steady by hand with gloves or use light pressure on the belt before fully removing it.
- Remove the pulley bolts and take the pulley off.
- Keep the bolts together so they go back in the same location.
Step 6: Remove the Water Pump
- Place shop towels under the water pump area to catch leftover coolant.
- Use a 10mm socket, 12mm socket, 3/8-inch ratchet, and extension set to remove the water pump mounting bolts.
- Note bolt lengths and locations as you remove them.
- Pull the water pump straight away from the engine.
- If stuck, gently tap the pump body by hand or carefully work it loose. Do not pry hard against the aluminum timing cover.
Step 7: Clean the Sealing Surface
- Use a plastic gasket scraper to clean the engine-side sealing surface.
- Wipe the area with shop towels until it is clean and dry.
- Do not gouge, scratch, or sand the aluminum surface.
- Make sure no old gasket material falls into the coolant passages.
- Clean surface prevents leaks.
Step 8: Install the New Water Pump
- Install the new water pump gasket/O-ring onto the new water pump.
- Position the water pump squarely against the engine.
- Start all mounting bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Use a 10mm socket, 12mm socket, ratchet, and extension set to snug the bolts evenly in a crisscross pattern.
- Use the torque wrench 5-50 Nm to tighten the water pump bolts to Torque to 9 Nm (80 in-lbs) unless the pump manufacturer specifies otherwise.
- Do not use sealant unless the replacement pump instructions specifically require it.
Step 9: Reinstall the Water Pump Pulley
- Place the pulley onto the new water pump.
- Start the pulley bolts by hand.
- Use a 10mm socket and ratchet to snug the bolts evenly.
- Use the torque wrench 5-50 Nm to tighten the pulley bolts to Torque to 15 Nm (11 ft-lbs).
Step 10: Reinstall the Serpentine Drive Belt
- Route the belt around the pulleys using your photo as a guide.
- Use the 14mm box-end wrench to rotate the belt tensioner.
- Slide the belt onto the final pulley, then slowly release the tensioner.
- Check that the belt ribs sit fully inside every pulley groove.
- Misaligned belts shred quickly.
Step 11: Refill the Cooling System
- Install the coolant spill-free funnel kit into the radiator fill neck.
- Use a funnel to add Toyota-compatible pink super long life coolant premix slowly.
- Fill the radiator and add coolant to the overflow reservoir up to the Full mark.
- Leave the spill-free funnel installed for air bleeding.
Step 12: Bleed Air From the Cooling System
- Reconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket.
- Start the engine and set the cabin heater to maximum heat and low fan speed.
- Let the engine idle while watching the coolant level in the spill-free funnel.
- Add coolant as air bubbles come out and the level drops.
- When the radiator fans cycle on and warm air comes from the vents, let it idle a few more minutes.
- Shut the engine off and let it cool.
- Remove the spill-free funnel kit and install the radiator cap securely by hand.
Step 13: Reinstall the Lower Engine Cover
- Use a 10mm socket and ratchet to reinstall the lower splash shield fasteners.
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver to seat any plastic clips.
- If equipped with small splash shield bolts, tighten them snugly by hand tool only. Do not overtighten plastic or thin shield hardware.
Step 14: Lower the Vehicle
- Use the floor jack rated 2-ton minimum to lift the Corolla slightly off the jack stands.
- Remove the jack stands rated 2-ton minimum.
- Lower the vehicle slowly to the ground.
- Remove the wheel chocks.
