Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Drain the Coolant
- Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
- Place a drain pan 2-gallon minimum under the radiator drain area.
- Remove the radiator cap by hand only after the engine is completely cool.
- Use a Phillips screwdriver #2 or pliers 8-inch to open the radiator drain plug, depending on plug style.
- Let the coolant drain fully into the pan.
- Open slowly to control flow.
Step 2: Remove the Under Cover and Accessory Belts
- Use a trim clip removal tool and 10mm socket to remove the lower engine under cover fasteners.
- Use a 12mm socket to loosen the accessory belt adjuster lock bolts.
- Use a 12mm socket to turn the belt adjusters and release belt tension.
- Remove the accessory drive belts by hand.
- Inspect the belts for cracks or glazing. Replace them if worn.
Step 3: Remove the Radiator Fans
- Use a 10mm socket to remove the radiator fan mounting bolts.
- Disconnect the fan electrical connectors by pressing the locking tabs by hand.
- Lift the fan assemblies straight up and out.
- This gives more room to remove the crankshaft pulley and timing covers.
Step 4: Remove the Crankshaft Pulley
- Install the crankshaft pulley holder onto the crank pulley.
- Use a 22mm socket and 1/2-inch breaker bar to loosen the crankshaft pulley bolt.
- Remove the crankshaft pulley bolt and washer by hand.
- Pull the crankshaft pulley straight off the crankshaft nose.
- Do not pry against the timing cover with a screwdriver.
Step 5: Remove the Timing Belt Covers
- Use a 10mm socket to remove the front timing belt cover bolts.
- Remove the left, right, and center timing belt covers by hand.
- Keep the bolts grouped by cover location so they go back in the same places.
- Take photos before disassembly.
Step 6: Align the Timing Marks
- Use a 22mm socket on the crankshaft bolt temporarily threaded into the crankshaft.
- Turn the engine clockwise only until the crankshaft and camshaft timing marks line up with their reference marks.
- Do not use the arrows on the cam sprockets as timing marks. Use the small line marks.
- Use a paint marker if available to mark the belt-to-sprocket positions before removing the belt.
Step 7: Remove the Timing Belt
- Use a 12mm socket to loosen and remove the timing belt tensioner bolts.
- Remove the timing belt tensioner.
- Slide the timing belt off the cam sprockets, idler pulleys, crank sprocket, and water pump.
- Do not rotate any sprockets after the belt is removed.
- If reusing reference marks, keep the old belt oriented so you can compare it with the new belt.
Step 8: Remove the Water Pump
- Place the drain pan 2-gallon minimum under the water pump area.
- Use pliers 8-inch to move the lower radiator hose clamp back from the water pump outlet.
- Twist and remove the lower radiator hose by hand.
- Use a 10mm socket to remove the water pump mounting bolts.
- Pull the water pump straight off the engine.
- More coolant will drain out. Keep your face and hands clear.
Step 9: Clean the Mounting Surface
- Use a plastic gasket scraper to clean old gasket material from the engine block surface.
- Use shop towels to wipe the area clean and dry.
- Do not use a metal scraper. It can gouge the aluminum sealing surface.
- Make sure no old gasket pieces fall into the coolant passages.
Step 10: Install the New Water Pump
- Place the new water pump gasket onto the new water pump.
- Position the water pump against the engine by hand.
- Start all water pump bolts by hand to avoid cross-threading.
- Use a 10mm socket to snug the bolts evenly in a crisscross pattern.
- Use a torque wrench 10-150 ft-lbs with a 10mm socket to tighten the water pump bolts to Torque to 10 Nm (7 ft-lbs).
- Reconnect the lower radiator hose and use pliers 8-inch to move the clamp back into position.
Step 11: Replace the Thermostat
- Use a 10mm socket to remove the thermostat housing bolts at the lower water pump area.
- Remove the thermostat and gasket by hand.
- Install the new thermostat with the jiggle valve positioned upward.
- A jiggle valve is the small loose pin in the thermostat that helps trapped air escape.
- Install the new thermostat gasket.
- Use a torque wrench 10-150 ft-lbs with a 10mm socket to tighten the thermostat housing bolts to Torque to 10 Nm (7 ft-lbs).
Step 12: Install New Timing Belt Components
- Use a 14mm socket to remove the timing belt idler pulley bolts one at a time.
- Install the new idler pulleys in the same locations.
- Use a torque wrench 10-150 ft-lbs with a 14mm socket to tighten smooth idler pulley bolts to Torque to 39 Nm (29 ft-lbs).
- Use a torque wrench 10-150 ft-lbs with a 14mm socket to tighten toothed idler pulley bolts to Torque to 39 Nm (29 ft-lbs).
- Install the new timing belt tensioner with a 12mm socket but do not pull the retaining pin yet.
- Use a torque wrench 10-150 ft-lbs with a 12mm socket to tighten the tensioner bolts to Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).
Step 13: Install the New Timing Belt
- Confirm the crankshaft and camshaft timing marks are still aligned.
- Install the timing belt around the crank sprocket, idlers, cam sprockets, and water pump in the correct routing.
- Keep the belt tight on the non-tensioner side while routing it.
- Use your fingers to keep belt teeth seated fully on each sprocket.
- Pull the tensioner retaining pin by hand once the belt is correctly routed.
- Wait about 5 minutes for the hydraulic tensioner to fully apply tension.
Step 14: Verify Timing Before Reassembly
- Use a 22mm socket and 1/2-inch breaker bar on the crankshaft bolt.
- Rotate the engine clockwise by hand two full crankshaft turns.
- Stop at the timing mark position and confirm all timing marks line up again.
- If marks do not align, remove the belt and correct the timing before starting the engine.
- Do not use the starter motor for this check.
Step 15: Reinstall Timing Covers and Crank Pulley
- Use a 10mm socket to reinstall the timing belt covers.
- Use a torque wrench 10-150 ft-lbs with a 10mm socket to tighten timing cover bolts snugly to Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).
- Slide the crankshaft pulley onto the crankshaft nose by hand.
- Install the crankshaft pulley bolt and washer by hand.
- Use the crankshaft pulley holder, 22mm socket, and torque wrench 10-150 ft-lbs to tighten the crankshaft pulley bolt to Torque to 130 Nm (96 ft-lbs).
Step 16: Reinstall Radiator Fans and Accessory Belts
- Lower the radiator fan assemblies into place by hand.
- Reconnect the fan electrical connectors by hand until they click.
- Use a 10mm socket to install the fan mounting bolts.
- Use a torque wrench 10-150 ft-lbs with a 10mm socket to tighten fan bolts to Torque to 7 Nm (62 in-lbs).
- Install the accessory drive belts by hand.
- Use a 12mm socket to adjust belt tension.
- Use a 12mm socket to tighten the adjuster lock bolts.
- Use a torque wrench 10-150 ft-lbs with a 12mm socket to tighten accessory belt lock bolts to Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).
Step 17: Refill and Bleed the Cooling System
- Close the radiator drain plug using a Phillips screwdriver #2 or pliers 8-inch, depending on plug style.
- Use a funnel spill-free coolant fill kit at the radiator neck.
- Fill with Subaru-compatible blue long-life coolant until the radiator stays full.
- Fill the coolant overflow tank to the full mark.
- Reconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket.
- Start the engine and let it idle with the heater set to full hot.
- Watch for air bubbles in the funnel and keep adding coolant as the level drops.
- Once the radiator fans cycle on and off, install the radiator cap by hand.
Step 18: Reinstall the Under Cover
- Use a trim clip removal tool to align the under cover clips.
- Use a 10mm socket to reinstall the lower under cover fasteners.
- Lower the vehicle safely using the floor jack 2-ton minimum after removing the jack stands 2-ton minimum.
