Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove The Radiator Cap And Engine Covers

  • Make sure the engine is cold, then slowly remove the radiator cap by hand.
  • Use a trim clip removal tool to remove any front lower splash shield clips if they block access to the radiator drain.
  • Use a 10mm socket to remove any splash shield bolts that block access.
  • Take photos before removing covers.

Step 2: Drain The Coolant

  • Place a 2-gallon drain pan under the radiator drain cock at the lower radiator area.
  • Use a flat-blade screwdriver or your fingers to carefully open the radiator drain cock.
  • Let the coolant drain until the flow slows to a drip.
  • Close the radiator drain cock by hand. Do not overtighten it.
  • If the radiator drain plug gasket is damaged, replace it now.

Step 3: Remove The Serpentine Belt

  • Use a 19mm wrench on the belt tensioner hex and rotate the tensioner to release belt tension.
  • A belt tensioner is a spring-loaded pulley that keeps the belt tight.
  • Slide the belt off one pulley by hand, then slowly release the tensioner.
  • Remove the belt from the engine bay.
  • Inspect the belt. Replace it if it has cracks, shiny glazing, frayed edges, or coolant contamination.

Step 4: Move Hoses And Brackets Out Of The Way

  • Use hose clamp pliers to loosen any coolant hose clamp connected to the water pump area.
  • Slide the clamp back on the hose, then gently twist the hose by hand to loosen it.
  • Use a flat-blade screwdriver carefully if the hose is stuck, but do not gouge the aluminum sealing surface.
  • Use a 10mm or 12mm socket to remove small brackets that block water pump bolt access.
  • Label hoses with tape if needed so they go back in the same place.

Step 5: Remove The Old Water Pump

  • Place shop towels below the water pump area to catch leftover coolant.
  • Use a 12mm socket to loosen the water pump mounting bolts a little at a time.
  • Remove the water pump bolts and keep track of their locations if lengths differ.
  • Gently pull the water pump straight off the engine.
  • If it is stuck, tap lightly by hand or use gentle side pressure. Do not pry hard on the aluminum engine surface.

Step 6: Clean The Sealing Surface

  • Use a plastic gasket scraper to remove old gasket material from the engine surface.
  • A sealing surface is the flat area where the gasket prevents leaks.
  • Wipe the area clean with shop towels.
  • Do not use metal scrapers or power sanding discs. They can damage the aluminum and cause leaks.
  • Make sure no old gasket pieces fall into the coolant passages.

Step 7: Install The New Water Pump

  • Place the new water pump gasket/O-ring onto the new water pump.
  • If the gasket design requires it, use only the sealant supplied or specified with the pump. Do not add extra sealant to a dry-style gasket.
  • Hold the new water pump against the engine by hand.
  • Start all water pump bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a 12mm socket to snug the bolts evenly in a crisscross pattern.
  • Use a torque wrench to tighten the water pump bolts evenly to Torque to 21 Nm (15 ft-lbs).

Step 8: Reinstall Hoses And Brackets

  • Push the coolant hose fully onto the water pump fitting by hand.
  • Use hose clamp pliers to slide the clamp back to its original position.
  • Use a 10mm or 12mm socket to reinstall any removed brackets.
  • For small 10mm bracket bolts, tighten securely by hand with the ratchet unless a specific bracket torque is available.
  • Check that no hose is kinked or rubbing the belt path.

Step 9: Reinstall The Serpentine Belt

  • Route the serpentine belt around the pulleys using your photo as a guide.
  • Use a 19mm wrench to rotate the belt tensioner and create slack.
  • Slide the belt over the final pulley by hand.
  • Slowly release the tensioner with the 19mm wrench.
  • Check every pulley groove to make sure the belt sits straight and fully seated.
  • A misrouted belt can shred quickly.

Step 10: Refill The Cooling System

  • Install a cooling system spill-free funnel kit into the radiator filler neck.
  • Use a long-neck funnel to fill the radiator with Toyota-compatible pink Super Long Life coolant premixed 50/50.
  • Fill slowly to reduce trapped air.
  • Fill the coolant reservoir to the FULL line.
  • Reconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket and tighten it snugly.

Step 11: Bleed Air From The Cooling System

  • Leave the spill-free funnel installed and partly filled with coolant.
  • Start the engine and set the heater to full hot with the blower on low.
  • Let the engine idle while watching the coolant level in the funnel.
  • As air bubbles come out, add coolant as needed with the long-neck funnel.
  • When the upper radiator hose becomes hot and bubbles mostly stop, install the radiator cap by hand.
  • Use safety glasses and gloves because coolant may splash during bleeding.

Step 12: Reinstall Splash Shields

  • Use a trim clip removal tool to reinstall plastic clips.
  • Use a 10mm socket to reinstall splash shield bolts.
  • Tighten splash shield bolts snugly by hand with the ratchet.

  • โœ… Let your Tacoma idle until fully warm and check for leaks around the water pump, hoses, and radiator drain.
  • ๐ŸŒก๏ธ Watch the temperature gauge. Shut the engine off if it rises above normal.
  • ๐Ÿ”ฅ Confirm the heater blows warm air. No heat can mean trapped air in the cooling system.
