Replacing the water pump on your Tacoma requires draining the coolant, removing the drive belt and cooling fan parts, unbolting the pump, then installing a new pump and gasket. The water pump circulates coolant through the engine and radiator, so a leaking or noisy pump can quickly lead to overheating.

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park your Tacoma on level ground and let the engine cool completely.
  • 🧤 Wear safety glasses and gloves before handling coolant.
  • 🔋 Disconnect the negative battery cable with a 10mm wrench.
  • 🪣 Place a drain pan under the radiator drain area before opening the cooling system.
  • 🔧 A serpentine belt is the long rubber belt that drives the alternator, A/C compressor, and water pump pulley.
  • 🔧 A fan clutch wrench holds or turns the mechanical fan fasteners without damaging the fan or pulley.
  • ♻️ Recycle old coolant properly. Do not pour coolant on the ground or into drains.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Disconnect the Battery

  • Use a 10mm wrench to loosen the negative battery terminal nut.
  • Lift the negative cable off the battery post and move it aside so it cannot spring back.

Step 2: Raise the Front Slightly

  • Use a floor jack 3-ton minimum to raise the front of your Tacoma if you need more room underneath.
  • Support it securely with jack stands 3-ton minimum.
  • Confirm the truck is stable before reaching underneath.

Step 3: Drain the Coolant

  • Make sure the engine is cold.
  • Remove the radiator cap slowly by hand using a shop towel.
  • Place a drain pan 3-gallon minimum under the radiator drain cock.
  • Open the radiator drain cock by hand. Use pliers gently only if it is stuck.
  • Drain the coolant, then close the drain cock snugly by hand.
  • Do not overtighten plastic drains.

Step 4: Remove the Engine Under Cover if Equipped

  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the under cover bolts if your Tacoma has the front lower cover installed.
  • Lower the cover and set it aside with its bolts.

Step 5: Remove the Fan Shroud Upper Fasteners

  • Use a 10mm socket, 3/8-inch drive ratchet, and 3/8-inch drive extension 6-inch to remove the fan shroud upper bolts.
  • Leave the shroud loose in place for now.
  • The fan shroud is the plastic ring around the cooling fan that directs airflow through the radiator.

Step 6: Remove the Mechanical Fan and Fan Clutch

  • Use a fan clutch wrench set (specialty) to hold the water pump pulley and loosen the fan clutch nuts.
  • Use a 12mm wrench to remove the four fan clutch nuts.
  • Lift the fan and shroud upward together carefully.
  • Set the fan upright. Do not lay the fan clutch flat.
  • Watch the radiator fins.

Step 7: Note the Belt Routing

  • Take a clear photo of the serpentine belt path before removing it.
  • If the belt routing label is present under the hood, compare your photo to the label.

Step 8: Remove the Serpentine Belt

  • Place a serpentine belt tool (specialty) or 3/8-inch drive breaker bar on the belt tensioner.
  • Rotate the tensioner to release belt tension.
  • Slide the belt off one pulley, then slowly release the tensioner.
  • Remove the belt from the engine bay.
  • Inspect the belt. Replace it if cracked, shiny, frayed, or soaked with coolant.

Step 9: Remove the Water Pump Pulley

  • Use a fan clutch wrench set (specialty) to hold the water pump pulley from turning.
  • Use a 12mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the water pump pulley bolts.
  • Remove the pulley and set it aside.

Step 10: Remove Hoses or Brackets Blocking the Pump

  • Use pliers to move any spring clamps away from the water pump hose connections.
  • Use a flathead screwdriver small to gently loosen stuck hoses.
  • Use a 10mm socket or 12mm socket with the 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove small brackets that block water pump access.
  • Keep track of bolt locations because lengths may differ.

Step 11: Remove the Old Water Pump

  • Place the drain pan 3-gallon minimum under the water pump area.
  • Use a 10mm socket, 12mm socket, 3/8-inch drive ratchet, and 3/8-inch drive extension 6-inch to remove the water pump mounting bolts.
  • Break the pump loose by gently wiggling it by hand.
  • Remove the water pump from the engine.
  • Expect more coolant to drain out.

Step 12: Clean the Sealing Surface

  • Use a plastic scraper to remove old gasket material from the engine sealing surface.
  • Use shop towels to wipe the area clean and dry.
  • Do not use a metal scraper or abrasive disc on the aluminum surface.
  • A smooth surface prevents leaks.

Step 13: Install the New Water Pump

  • Place the new water pump gasket/O-ring onto the new engine water pump.
  • Hold the pump squarely against the engine.
  • Start all mounting bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a 10mm socket, 12mm socket, and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to snug the bolts evenly in a crisscross pattern.
  • Use a torque wrench 5-80 ft-lbs to tighten the water pump bolts to Torque to 21 Nm (15 ft-lbs).

Step 14: Reinstall Brackets and Hoses

  • Use a 10mm socket or 12mm socket with the 3/8-inch drive ratchet to reinstall any removed brackets.
  • Use pliers to return hose spring clamps to their original positions.
  • Make sure every hose is fully seated past the raised bead on its fitting.

Step 15: Reinstall the Water Pump Pulley

  • Place the pulley onto the new water pump hub.
  • Start all pulley bolts by hand.
  • Use a fan clutch wrench set (specialty) to hold the pulley.
  • Use a 12mm socket and torque wrench 5-80 ft-lbs to tighten the pulley bolts to Torque to 21 Nm (15 ft-lbs).

Step 16: Reinstall the Serpentine Belt

  • Route the belt around the pulleys using your photo as a guide.
  • Use the serpentine belt tool (specialty) or 3/8-inch drive breaker bar to rotate the tensioner.
  • Slide the belt over the final pulley, then slowly release the tensioner.
  • Check that the belt ribs sit correctly in every pulley groove.
  • Misrouted belts can overheat fast.

Step 17: Reinstall the Fan and Shroud

  • Lower the fan and shroud into place together carefully.
  • Install the fan clutch onto the water pump studs.
  • Start the four fan clutch nuts by hand.
  • Use a fan clutch wrench set (specialty) to hold the pulley.
  • Use a 12mm wrench to tighten the fan clutch nuts evenly to Torque to 21 Nm (15 ft-lbs).
  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to reinstall the fan shroud bolts.

Step 18: Reinstall the Engine Under Cover

  • Raise the lower cover into place by hand if removed.
  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to install the cover bolts.
  • Tighten the cover bolts snugly. Do not overtighten small cover hardware.

Step 19: Refill the Cooling System

  • Install the coolant funnel spill-free kit onto the radiator neck.
  • Pour Toyota-compatible pink long-life coolant 50/50 premix slowly into the radiator.
  • Fill until the radiator stays full and coolant remains in the funnel.
  • Fill the coolant reservoir to the “FULL” mark.

Step 20: Reconnect the Battery

  • Place the negative battery cable back onto the battery post.
  • Use a 10mm wrench to tighten the terminal nut until snug.

Step 21: Bleed Air from the Cooling System

  • Start the engine with the coolant funnel spill-free kit still installed.
  • Set the heater to full hot and the fan to low.
  • Let the engine idle until it reaches normal operating temperature.
  • Watch for air bubbles coming up through the funnel.
  • Use nitrile gloves and gently squeeze the upper radiator hose a few times to help move trapped air.
  • Add coolant as the level drops.
  • When bubbles stop and the heater blows warm, turn the engine off.

Step 22: Cap the System and Lower the Vehicle

  • Use the stopper from the coolant funnel spill-free kit to remove the funnel without spilling.
  • Install the radiator cap by hand until fully seated.
  • Use the floor jack 3-ton minimum to lift the front slightly off the jack stands.
  • Remove the jack stands 3-ton minimum.
  • Lower your Tacoma slowly to the ground.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Start the engine and inspect around the water pump, hose connections, and radiator drain cock for leaks.
  • ✅ Watch the temperature gauge during the first 10-15 minute test drive.
  • ✅ After the engine cools completely, recheck the radiator and reservoir coolant levels.
  • ✅ Top off with Toyota-compatible pink long-life coolant 50/50 premix if needed.
  • ✅ If the heater blows cold or the temperature rises above normal, stop driving and bleed the cooling system again.
  • ✅ Recycle the old coolant safely.
