📋 Before You Begin
- 📋 Park your Frontier on level ground and set the parking brake.
- 📋 Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
- 📋 Disconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket.
- 📋 Raise the front with a floor jack rated 3-ton minimum and support it with jack stands rated 3-ton minimum.
- 📋 A harmonic balancer is the crankshaft pulley at the front of the engine. It must be pulled off with a special puller.
- 📋 A timing chain tensioner keeps the chain tight using spring and oil pressure.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Disconnect Battery and Remove Skid Protection
- Use a 10mm socket to disconnect the negative battery cable.
- Use a 12mm socket or 14mm socket to remove the front skid plate if equipped.
- Set all bolts aside in labeled containers.
- Label bolts as you go.
Step 2: Drain Coolant and Engine Oil
- Place a drain pan under the radiator drain area.
- Open the radiator drain carefully and drain the coolant.
- Use a 14mm socket to remove the engine oil drain plug.
- Drain the oil completely into the drain pan.
- Reinstall the oil drain plug and torque to 34 Nm (25 ft-lbs).
Step 3: Remove Engine Covers and Intake Ducting
- Use a 10mm socket to remove the plastic engine cover fasteners.
- Use a 10mm socket or screwdriver to loosen the air intake tube clamps.
- Disconnect the mass airflow sensor electrical connector by pressing the release tab.
- Remove the intake tube and air ducting from the engine bay.
Step 4: Remove Upper Intake Manifold
- Use a 10mm socket and 12mm socket to remove brackets and intake manifold bolts.
- Disconnect vacuum hoses and electrical connectors by hand.
- Lift the upper intake manifold straight up.

- Do not drop bolts inside.
Step 5: Remove Serpentine Belt

Step 6: Remove Cooling Fan, Shroud, and Front Accessories

- Use a 10mm socket and 12mm socket to remove front accessory brackets as needed.
- Move wiring and hoses aside gently. Do not pull on connectors.
Step 7: Remove Crankshaft Pulley
- Install the crankshaft pulley holding tool to hold the pulley still.
- Use a 27mm socket and 1/2-inch breaker bar to loosen the crankshaft pulley bolt.
- Use the harmonic balancer puller to pull the pulley off the crankshaft.
- Do not pry against the timing cover.
Step 8: Remove Valve Covers
- Use a 10mm socket to remove ignition coil bolts.
- Pull the ignition coils upward and set them aside in order.
- Use a 10mm socket to remove both valve cover bolts.
- Lift off the valve covers carefully.
- Remove old valve cover gaskets and spark plug tube seals.
Step 9: Remove Front Timing Cover
- Use a 10mm socket, 12mm socket, and 14mm socket to remove timing cover bolts.
- Use a plastic trim clip remover or plastic razor scraper to gently separate the cover.
- Do not gouge the aluminum sealing surfaces.
- Remove the front cover and set it on a clean workbench.
Step 10: Set Engine to Top Dead Center
- Use a 27mm socket on the crankshaft bolt area to rotate the engine clockwise only.
- Align the crankshaft and camshaft timing marks to the factory timing positions.
- Use a paint marker to mark the chain-to-sprocket positions before removal.
- Top dead center means piston number one is at the top of its compression stroke.
Step 11: Remove Timing Chain Tensioners and Guides
- Use a 10mm socket and 12mm socket to remove timing chain tensioner bolts.
- Use a camshaft holding tool to prevent camshaft movement.
- Remove the chain guides and tensioners in order.
- Keep your fingers clear of chain pinch points.
Step 12: Remove Timing Chains
- Remove the primary timing chain first.
- Remove both secondary timing chains after the tension is released.
- Do not rotate the crankshaft or camshafts after chain removal.
- Compare old chains, guides, and tensioners with the new parts before installing.
Step 13: Install New Timing Chains, Guides, and Tensioners
- Install the new secondary timing chains using the colored chain links and factory sprocket marks.
- Install the new primary timing chain using the colored chain links and factory crank/cam timing marks.
- Use a 10mm socket and 12mm socket to install the guides and tensioners.
- Typical small timing guide fasteners are tightened carefully with a 3/8-inch torque wrench; do not overtighten aluminum-thread bolts.
- Release the tensioners only after all timing marks are aligned.
- Check timing marks twice.
Step 14: Rotate Engine by Hand
- Use a 27mm socket and rotate the crankshaft clockwise two full turns.
- Stop immediately if the engine binds or feels locked.
- Recheck that the timing marks return to their proper alignment positions.
- If marks are off, remove the chains and correct the timing before continuing.
Step 15: Clean Sealing Surfaces
- Use a plastic razor scraper and gasket scraper to remove old sealant.
- Use brake cleaner on a towel to clean oil from sealing surfaces.
- Do not let debris fall into the oil pan or timing area.
- Sealing surfaces must be clean and dry before applying new sealant.
Step 16: Install Front Timing Cover
- Apply front timing cover sealant to the cover in the same pattern as the factory sealant path.
- Install the timing cover carefully without smearing the sealant.
- Use a 10mm socket, 12mm socket, and 14mm socket to install the bolts by hand first.
- Tighten bolts gradually with a 3/8-inch torque wrench in a crisscross pattern.
- Small cover bolts are typically tightened lightly; avoid stripping aluminum threads.
Step 17: Install Crankshaft Front Seal and Pulley
- Install the new crankshaft front seal squarely into the timing cover.
- Slide the crankshaft pulley back onto the crankshaft.
- Use the crankshaft pulley holding tool and 27mm socket to tighten the crankshaft pulley bolt.
- Use the factory torque-plus-angle method if your service information specifies it for the pulley bolt.
Step 18: Reinstall Valve Covers
- Install new valve cover gaskets and spark plug tube seals.
- Use a 10mm socket to reinstall the valve covers.
- Tighten valve cover bolts evenly with a 3/8-inch torque wrench.
- Reinstall ignition coils using a 10mm socket.
Step 19: Reinstall Intake Manifold and Accessories
- Install new upper intake manifold gaskets.
- Use a 10mm socket and 12mm socket to reinstall the intake manifold and brackets.
- Reconnect all vacuum hoses and electrical connectors.
- Install the intake ducting and tighten clamps with a 10mm socket.
Step 20: Install New Serpentine Belt
- Route the new serpentine belt around the pulleys using your photo.
- Use the serpentine belt tool to rotate the tensioner.
- Slide the belt into place and release the tensioner slowly.
- Make sure the belt ribs sit fully in every pulley groove.
Step 21: Refill Oil and Coolant
- Install a new oil filter by hand.
- Use a funnel to refill the engine with fresh engine oil.
- Use a coolant fill funnel kit to refill the cooling system.
- Reconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket.
Step 22: First Start Check
- Before starting, check that all tools are removed from the engine bay.
- Start the engine and listen carefully.
- A brief rattle for one or two seconds may occur while oil pressure fills the tensioners.
- Shut the engine off immediately if you hear loud knocking, grinding, or continuous chain noise.
