🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Confirm This Is a Timing Chain Job

  • Use an OBD-II scan tool to check for timing-related codes before disassembly.
  • Common symptoms include rattling at startup, cam/crank correlation codes, rough idle, low power, or extended crank.
  • If the concern is only routine maintenance, no belt replacement is needed because your Canyon uses a chain.
  • Do not replace parts blindly.

Step 2: Disconnect the Battery

  • Use a 10mm socket to loosen the negative battery terminal.
  • Move the cable aside so it cannot touch the battery post.

Step 3: Raise and Secure the Front of the Truck

  • Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • Use a floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to raise the front of your Canyon.
  • Set the truck securely on jack stands rated 3-ton minimum.
  • Gently shake the truck by hand before getting underneath to confirm it is stable.

Step 4: Remove Lower Shields and Access Panels

  • Use a 7mm socket, 10mm socket, and plastic trim clip remover to remove lower splash shields as equipped.
  • Keep bolts and clips grouped by location.
  • Cardboard labels prevent mix-ups.

Step 5: Drain Fluids as Needed

  • Place a 10-quart drain pan under the engine.
  • Use the correct metric socket or wrench to remove drain plugs or hoses as needed for access.
  • Drain engine oil if removing the front cover and lower oil pan sealing areas.
  • Drain coolant if cooling system components block front cover removal.

Step 6: Remove Intake Ducting and Front Engine Accessories

  • Use a flat-blade screwdriver or 7mm socket to loosen intake duct clamps.
  • Use metric sockets 10mm-15mm to remove brackets or accessory components blocking timing cover access.
  • Disconnect electrical connectors by pressing the lock tabs by hand. Use a pick tool only if the lock is stuck.

Step 7: Remove the Drive Belt

  • Use the correct metric socket or wrench on the belt tensioner.
  • Rotate the tensioner slowly to release belt tension.
  • Slide the belt off the pulleys and note the routing before removal.
  • Take a belt-routing photo first.

Step 8: Support the Engine

  • Install an engine support bar across the upper body structure if an engine mount bracket must be removed.
  • Do not place a jack directly under thin aluminum oil pan areas without a wide wood block.
  • Use metric sockets 15mm-18mm to remove only the mounts or brackets needed for access.

Step 9: Remove the Valve Cover

  • Use a 10mm socket to remove ignition coil fasteners and valve cover bolts.
  • Use a pick tool carefully to release harness clips.
  • Lift the valve cover straight up to avoid damaging the sealing surface.
  • Discard the old valve cover gasket.

Step 10: Remove the Crankshaft Pulley

  • Use a crankshaft pulley holding tool to hold the pulley steady.
  • Use a 1/2-inch drive breaker bar and correct metric socket to loosen the crankshaft pulley bolt.
  • Use a harmonic balancer puller to remove the pulley evenly.
  • Do not pry against the timing cover.

Step 11: Remove the Timing Cover

  • Use metric sockets 8mm-15mm to remove timing cover bolts.
  • Use a plastic gasket scraper to break old sealant gently.
  • Do not gouge the aluminum sealing surfaces.
  • Keep bolts in order because lengths may vary.

Step 12: Set Engine to Top Dead Center

  • Use a breaker bar and crankshaft socket to rotate the engine clockwise only.
  • Align the crankshaft and camshaft timing marks according to the timing chain kit instructions.
  • Top Dead Center means piston number one is at the top of its compression stroke.
  • Use the camshaft holding tool to prevent camshaft movement.

Step 13: Remove the Chain Tensioner, Guides, and Chain

  • Use metric sockets 10mm-13mm to remove the timing chain tensioner bolts.
  • Remove the chain guides using the correct metric socket.
  • Slide the timing chain off the sprockets without rotating the camshafts or crankshaft.
  • If anything moves, stop and realign timing marks before continuing.

Step 14: Install the New Timing Chain Components

  • Install the new guides using metric sockets.
  • Install the new timing chain with the colored chain links aligned to the crankshaft and camshaft timing marks.
  • Install the new tensioner using a torque wrench.
  • Use the torque specs supplied with the timing chain kit or OEM service information for your exact fasteners.
  • Do not guess torque values on timing components.

Step 15: Verify Timing Before Closing the Engine

  • Remove the camshaft holding tool.
  • Use the breaker bar to rotate the crankshaft clockwise by hand two full turns.
  • Recheck all timing marks after rotation.
  • If the engine locks, binds, or marks do not align correctly, stop and correct the timing before reassembly.
  • Hand rotation catches mistakes safely.

Step 16: Clean and Reseal the Timing Cover

  • Use a plastic gasket scraper and shop towels to clean old sealant from the timing cover and engine block.
  • Install a new crankshaft front seal.
  • Apply the correct engine-safe RTV sealant from the timing cover gasket/sealant set.
  • Use a torque wrench to tighten cover bolts in an even pattern.

Step 17: Reinstall the Crankshaft Pulley

  • Slide the crankshaft pulley into position by hand.
  • Install a new crankshaft pulley bolt.
  • Use the crankshaft pulley holding tool, torque wrench, and torque angle gauge to tighten the bolt to the required OEM torque-plus-angle specification.
  • Do not reuse a torque-to-yield crankshaft pulley bolt.

Step 18: Reinstall Valve Cover and Accessories

  • Install the new valve cover gasket.
  • Use a 10mm socket and torque wrench to tighten valve cover bolts evenly.
  • Reinstall brackets, wiring clips, ignition coils, and intake ducting using metric sockets and a flat-blade screwdriver.

Step 19: Reinstall Drive Belt and Shields

  • Use the correct metric socket or wrench to rotate the belt tensioner.
  • Route the belt over the pulleys using your photo or belt-routing diagram.
  • Use 7mm socket, 10mm socket, and plastic trim clip remover to reinstall shields and panels.

Step 20: Refill Fluids and Reconnect Battery

  • Install a new oil filter and refill with the correct engine oil.
  • Refill coolant if any was drained.
  • Use a 10mm socket to reconnect the negative battery cable.
  • Check for tools, rags, and loose connectors before starting the engine.
