🔧 Tacoma - Timing Belt Replacement

Your Tacoma’s 2.7L inline-4 engine uses a timing chain, not a timing belt. The timing chain is inside the engine and is not a normal maintenance replacement item like a belt.

If you are hearing rattling, have cam/crank correlation codes, or suspect timing wear, this becomes an advanced timing chain diagnosis and repair, not a simple belt replacement.

Difficulty Level: Advanced | Estimated Time: 6-10 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Do not remove timing components unless the engine is set to Top Dead Center. Top Dead Center means cylinder #1 is positioned at the top of its compression stroke.
  • ⚠️ Incorrect timing can cause a no-start, rough running, check engine light, or internal engine damage.
  • ⚠️ Disconnect the negative battery cable before working near the starter, alternator, or front engine wiring.
  • ⚠️ Let the engine cool fully before draining coolant or removing front engine parts.
  • ⚠️ Support the vehicle securely with jack stands if raising it. Never rely on a floor jack alone.

  • Serpentine belt - Qty: 1 if worn or cracked

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park your Tacoma on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • 🧊 Let the engine cool completely before opening the cooling system.
  • 🔋 Use a 10mm socket to disconnect the negative battery cable.
  • 🧰 This is not a beginner timing-belt service. Your Tacoma has a timing chain, and chain service requires accurate engine timing alignment.
  • 📸 Take photos before unplugging hoses, brackets, and electrical connectors. This helps during reassembly.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Verify the Engine Uses a Timing Chain

  • Use a flashlight to inspect the front of the engine. Your Tacoma does not have an external timing belt cover.
  • The timing chain is behind the metal front timing cover, inside the engine.
  • If your goal is routine maintenance, no timing belt replacement is required.
  • No belt service needed here.

Step 2: Check Symptoms Before Replacing Parts

  • Use an OBD2 scan tool to check for trouble codes before disassembly. An OBD2 scan tool reads engine fault codes from the truck’s computer.
  • Look for timing-related codes such as camshaft/crankshaft correlation faults.
  • Listen for chain rattle on cold start. A brief rattle can point to tensioner or guide wear.
  • If there are no symptoms or fault codes, timing chain replacement is usually unnecessary.

Step 3: Drain Coolant If Timing Chain Service Is Needed

  • Place a 2-gallon drain pan under the radiator drain.
  • Use pliers or a flat-blade screwdriver as needed to open the radiator drain valve carefully.
  • Remove the radiator cap only when the engine is completely cool.
  • Store used coolant safely away from pets and children.

Step 4: Remove Front Engine Accessories

  • Use a serpentine belt tool to rotate the belt tensioner and remove the serpentine belt. The tensioner is spring-loaded and keeps the belt tight.
  • Use 10mm, 12mm, and 14mm sockets to remove front brackets and accessory fasteners as needed.
  • Use a plastic trim clip remover to release any harness clips from the timing cover area.
  • Label connectors and hoses with tape before moving them aside.

Step 5: Remove the Crankshaft Pulley

  • Use a crankshaft pulley holding tool to keep the pulley from turning.
  • Use a 22mm socket and 1/2-inch breaker bar to loosen the crankshaft pulley bolt.
  • Use a harmonic balancer puller to remove the crankshaft pulley. A harmonic balancer puller safely pulls the pulley off the crankshaft without prying.
  • Do not pry against the timing cover because it can crack or bend.

Step 6: Remove the Valve Cover

  • Use a 10mm socket to remove ignition coil fasteners and valve cover bolts.
  • Move wiring harnesses gently by hand after releasing clips with a plastic trim clip remover.
  • Lift the valve cover straight up without damaging the gasket surface.
  • Clean gasket surfaces with a plastic gasket scraper only.

Step 7: Set Cylinder #1 to Top Dead Center

  • Use a 22mm socket on the crankshaft bolt to rotate the engine clockwise only.
  • Align the crankshaft timing mark with the TDC mark.
  • Confirm the camshaft timing marks are aligned according to the timing marks on the chain and sprockets.
  • Do not rotate the engine backward during timing setup.

Step 8: Remove the Timing Cover

  • Use 10mm, 12mm, and 14mm sockets to remove timing cover bolts.
  • Note bolt locations because timing cover bolts may be different lengths.
  • Use a plastic gasket scraper to break loose old sealant carefully.
  • Do not gouge the aluminum sealing surfaces.

Step 9: Remove the Timing Chain Tensioner, Guides, and Chain

  • Use a 10mm or 12mm socket to remove the timing chain tensioner bolts.
  • Use a 10mm or 12mm socket to remove the chain guide bolts.
  • Remove the timing chain only after confirming all timing marks are aligned.
  • Keep the crankshaft and camshafts from moving once the chain is removed.

Step 10: Install the New Timing Chain Components

  • Install the new guides using a 10mm or 12mm socket.
  • Install the new timing chain with colored chain links aligned to the crankshaft and camshaft timing marks.
  • Install the new tensioner using a 10mm or 12mm socket.
  • Release the tensioner only after the chain is correctly positioned.
  • Use a torque wrench for all guide and tensioner bolts. Torque to OEM specification for your Tacoma’s 2.7L engine service manual procedure.

Step 11: Rotate Engine by Hand and Recheck Timing

  • Use a 22mm socket and ratchet to rotate the crankshaft clockwise two full turns.
  • Stop if you feel hard resistance. Do not force the engine.
  • Recheck that crankshaft and camshaft timing marks return to their correct positions.
  • If marks do not align correctly, remove and reset the chain before reassembly.

Step 12: Reinstall the Timing Cover

  • Use a plastic gasket scraper and shop towels to clean all sealing surfaces.
  • Apply front timing cover sealant in the correct bead pattern.
  • Install a new crankshaft front oil seal before reinstalling the cover.
  • Use 10mm, 12mm, and 14mm sockets to install timing cover bolts in their original locations.
  • Use a torque wrench. Torque timing cover bolts to OEM specification for each bolt size and location.

Step 13: Reinstall the Valve Cover and Crankshaft Pulley

  • Install the new valve cover gasket by hand.
  • Use a 10mm socket to install the valve cover bolts evenly.
  • Use a crankshaft pulley holding tool and 22mm socket to reinstall the crankshaft pulley bolt.
  • Use a 1/2-inch torque wrench. Torque the crankshaft pulley bolt to OEM specification.

Step 14: Reinstall Belt, Accessories, and Coolant

  • Use 10mm, 12mm, and 14mm sockets to reinstall brackets and accessory components.
  • Use a serpentine belt tool to reinstall the serpentine belt on the correct routing path.
  • Use a coolant funnel kit to refill the cooling system with the correct coolant.
  • Reconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Start the engine and listen for abnormal rattling, knocking, or belt noise.
  • ✅ Watch the oil pressure and temperature warning lights. Shut off the engine immediately if a warning light appears.
  • ✅ Check for oil leaks around the timing cover, valve cover, and crankshaft seal.
  • ✅ Check coolant level after the engine warms up and cools back down.
  • ✅ Use an OBD2 scan tool to clear any stored codes and verify no timing-related codes return.
  • ✅ Road test gently, then recheck for leaks.
