🔧 RAV4 - Thermostat Replacement

Replacing the thermostat on your RAV4 means draining some engine coolant, removing the thermostat housing, installing a new thermostat and gasket, then refilling and bleeding the cooling system. The thermostat controls coolant flow so the engine warms up properly and does not overheat.

  • ⚠️ Do not open the radiator cap or coolant reservoir cap while the engine is hot.
  • ⚠️ Keep coolant off belts, pulleys, and electrical connectors.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not normally required for this repair on your RAV4.

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your RAV4 on level ground and let the engine cool for several hours.
  • Set the parking brake and place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • Use a floor jack only to lift the vehicle. Jack stands hold the vehicle safely while you work underneath.
  • A thermostat is a spring-loaded valve that opens when the engine reaches operating temperature.
  • A torque wrench tightens bolts to the correct tightness so parts seal without cracking.
  • A coolant funnel kit helps remove trapped air from the cooling system while refilling.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lift and Secure the Front

  • Use wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • Use a floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift the front of your RAV4 at the front center jacking point.
  • Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the front side jack points.
  • Gently lower the vehicle onto the jack stands and lightly shake the vehicle to confirm it is stable.
  • Never work under a jack alone.

Step 2: Remove the Lower Engine Splash Shield

  • Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the splash shield bolts.
  • Use a plastic trim clip remover to remove the plastic clips.
  • Lower the splash shield and set it aside.
  • Keep clips grouped by location.

Step 3: Drain Some Coolant

  • Place a drain pan 2-gallon minimum under the radiator drain area.
  • Slowly loosen the coolant reservoir cap by hand to release any leftover pressure.
  • Use a flat-blade screwdriver if needed to open the radiator drain cock carefully.
  • Drain enough coolant so the level drops below the thermostat housing, usually about 1 gallon.
  • Close the drain cock by hand until snug. Do not overtighten plastic drain fittings.

Step 4: Access the Thermostat Housing

  • Locate the lower radiator hose where it connects to the engine-side thermostat housing.
  • Use hose clamp pliers to squeeze the spring clamp and slide it back on the hose.
  • Twist the hose gently by hand to break it loose.
  • If stuck, use a flat-blade screwdriver carefully between the hose and housing edge to help loosen it without cutting the hose.
  • Pull the hose off and aim it toward the drain pan 2-gallon minimum.

Step 5: Remove the Thermostat Housing

  • Use a 10mm socket, 6-inch socket extension, and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the thermostat housing bolts.
  • Pull the housing straight away from the engine.
  • Note the thermostat direction before removing it. The spring side faces into the engine.
  • Remove the old thermostat and gasket or O-ring by hand.

Step 6: Clean the Sealing Surfaces

  • Use a plastic scraper to clean the thermostat housing and engine sealing surfaces.
  • Use shop towels to wipe away coolant and debris.
  • Do not use metal scrapers. They can gouge the aluminum sealing surface and cause leaks.
  • Clean surfaces seal best.

Step 7: Install the New Thermostat

  • Install the new engine coolant thermostat in the same direction as the old one.
  • Install the new thermostat gasket or O-ring fully seated around the thermostat.
  • If the thermostat has a small jiggle valve or bleed pin, position it at the top when installed.
  • A jiggle valve is a tiny loose pin that helps air escape during filling.

Step 8: Reinstall the Thermostat Housing

  • Position the thermostat housing squarely against the engine.
  • Start the bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a 10mm socket, 6-inch socket extension, and 3/8-inch torque wrench to tighten the housing bolts evenly.
  • Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).
  • Do not overtighten. The housing and threads can be damaged.

Step 9: Reconnect the Lower Radiator Hose

  • Slide the lower radiator hose fully onto the thermostat housing neck by hand.
  • Use hose clamp pliers to move the clamp back to its original position.
  • Make sure the clamp sits behind the raised bead on the housing neck.

Step 10: Refill the Cooling System

  • Install the coolant funnel kit on the coolant reservoir or radiator fill point as applicable.
  • Pour Toyota Super Long Life Coolant or equivalent pink premixed coolant slowly into the system.
  • Fill until the coolant level stays steady in the funnel.
  • Squeeze the upper radiator hose gently by hand several times to help move trapped air.

Step 11: Bleed Air from the Cooling System

  • Start the engine and let it idle with the coolant funnel kit installed.
  • Set the cabin heater to full hot and fan to low using the climate controls.
  • Watch for air bubbles in the funnel as the engine warms up.
  • Use safety glasses and keep hands away from belts and fans.
  • When the upper radiator hose becomes hot, the thermostat has opened.
  • Keep adding coolant as the level drops.
  • Once bubbles mostly stop and the heater blows hot air, shut the engine off.

Step 12: Reinstall the Splash Shield

  • Remove the coolant funnel kit and install the coolant cap securely by hand.
  • Use shop towels to wipe spilled coolant.
  • Raise the splash shield into place.
  • Use a plastic trim clip remover by hand to help align clips if needed.
  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to reinstall splash shield bolts.
  • Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs) if using a 3/8-inch torque wrench.

Step 13: Lower the Vehicle

  • Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift the front slightly off the jack stands.
  • Remove the jack stands rated 3-ton minimum.
  • Lower your RAV4 slowly to the ground.
  • Remove the wheel chocks.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Check the coolant level after the engine fully cools. Top off to the correct level if needed.
  • ✅ Look under the thermostat housing and lower radiator hose for leaks.
  • ✅ Take a short test drive while watching the temperature gauge.
  • ✅ After the test drive, let the engine cool again and recheck coolant level.
  • ✅ Properly recycle old coolant. Do not pour it on the ground or into drains.
  • ✅ If the temperature rises above normal, stop driving and recheck for trapped air, low coolant, or leaks.
