- Park your Odyssey on level ground and let the engine cool fully, preferably for several hours.
- Set the parking brake and place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
- If you need more room underneath, raise the front with a floor jack and place it securely on jack stands.
- Set the cabin temperature controls to full hot before draining coolant. This helps coolant circulate during refill and bleeding.
- A thermostat is a spring-loaded valve that opens when the engine warms up, allowing coolant to flow through the radiator.
- A torque wrench tightens bolts to an exact tightness so small aluminum parts are not cracked or stripped.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the Lower Splash Shield
- Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
- If raised, confirm the Odyssey is stable on jack stands rated 2-ton minimum.
- Use a plastic trim clip remover to remove the lower splash shield clips.
- Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove any lower shield bolts.
- Set the shield and fasteners aside in order.
- Tip: Use a cup for clips.
Step 2: Drain Some Coolant
- Place a drain pan 2-gallon minimum under the radiator drain area.
- Slowly remove the coolant reservoir cap by hand only if the engine is cold.
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver or your fingers to open the radiator drain plug, depending on access.
- Drain about 1 gallon of coolant, enough to lower the level below the thermostat housing.
- Close the radiator drain plug by hand. Do not overtighten plastic drain plugs.
Step 3: Locate the Thermostat Housing
- Follow the lower radiator hose from the radiator toward the engine.
- The hose connects to the thermostat housing on the lower/front side of the V6 engine.
- Use a shop towel to wipe the area clean so dirt does not enter the cooling system.
Step 4: Disconnect the Lower Radiator Hose
- Place the drain pan 2-gallon minimum under the thermostat housing.
- Use hose clamp pliers to squeeze the spring clamp on the lower radiator hose.
- Slide the clamp back on the hose.
- Gently twist the hose by hand to break it loose.
- If stuck, use a flat-blade screwdriver carefully at the hose edge, but do not gouge the aluminum housing.
- Pull the hose off and let remaining coolant drain into the pan.
- Tip: Twist first, then pull.
Step 5: Remove the Thermostat Housing
- Use a 10mm socket, 3/8-inch drive extension 6-inch, and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the thermostat housing bolts.
- Support the housing by hand as the last bolt comes out.
- Pull the housing straight away from the engine.
- Note the thermostat direction before removal. The spring side faces into the engine.
Step 6: Remove the Old Thermostat and Seal
- Pull the old thermostat out by hand.
- Remove the old thermostat seal/O-ring by hand.
- Use shop towels to clean the sealing surfaces.
- Do not use metal scrapers on the aluminum sealing surface.
- Make sure no old seal material remains.
Step 7: Install the New Thermostat
- Install the new thermostat seal/O-ring onto the new thermostat.
- Install the thermostat into the engine with the spring side facing inward.
- If the thermostat has a small jiggle valve or bleed pin, position it at the top.
- A jiggle valve is a tiny loose pin that lets trapped air pass during filling.
- Tip: Match the old thermostat position.
Step 8: Reinstall the Thermostat Housing
- Position the thermostat housing squarely against the engine.
- Start all bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to snug the bolts evenly.
- Use a torque wrench 3/8-inch drive and 10mm socket to tighten the housing bolts to Torque to 12 Nm (9 ft-lbs).
Step 9: Reconnect the Lower Radiator Hose
- Push the lower radiator hose fully onto the thermostat housing nipple.
- Use hose clamp pliers to move the spring clamp back to its original position.
- Make sure the clamp sits behind the raised bead on the housing.
- Wipe the area dry with shop towels so leaks are easier to spot later.
Step 10: Refill the Cooling System
- Insert a funnel into the coolant reservoir fill opening.
- Add Honda-compatible blue premixed coolant slowly until the level reaches the MAX mark.
- Squeeze the upper radiator hose by hand several times to help move trapped air.
- Keep the coolant container nearby for topping off during warm-up.
Step 11: Bleed Air From the Cooling System
- Start the engine and let it idle with the reservoir cap off.
- Set the cabin heat to full hot and the fan to low.
- Watch the coolant level and add Honda-compatible blue premixed coolant as the level drops.
- Let the engine warm until the radiator fans cycle on at least once.
- Use safety glasses and keep hands clear of belts, pulleys, and fans.
- Install the reservoir cap once bubbling stops and the level is stable.
Step 12: Reinstall the Lower Splash Shield
- Shut the engine off and check for leaks around the thermostat housing and lower hose.
- Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to reinstall lower shield bolts.
- Use the plastic trim clip remover by hand to help seat any push clips without damaging them.
- If any larger underbody bolts were removed, tighten them snugly; do not overtighten plastic shield hardware.
Step 13: Lower the Vehicle
- If raised, use the floor jack rated 2-ton minimum to lift slightly off the jack stands.
- Remove the jack stands rated 2-ton minimum.
- Lower the Odyssey slowly to the ground.
- Remove the wheel chocks.
✅ After Repair
- Check the coolant level again after the engine fully cools. Top off to the MAX mark if needed.
- Take a short test drive while watching the temperature gauge. It should stay normal and steady.
- After the drive, let the engine cool and inspect the thermostat housing and hose for leaks.
- Dispose of old coolant properly. Most parts stores or recycling centers accept used coolant.
