🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Raise and Secure the Front
- Use wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
- Use a floor jack, rated 2-ton minimum to lift the front of your Tucson at the front center jacking point.
- Place jack stands, rated 2-ton minimum under the proper front support points.
- Gently lower the vehicle onto the jack stands and lightly shake the vehicle to confirm it is stable.
- Never work under only a jack.
Step 2: Remove the Lower Engine Splash Shield
- Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
- Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the splash shield bolts.
- Use a plastic trim clip remover to remove any plastic push clips.
- Set the shield and fasteners aside in order.
Step 3: Drain Some Coolant
- Place a drain pan, 2-gallon minimum under the radiator drain area.
- Slowly loosen the coolant reservoir cap by hand to release any tiny leftover pressure.
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver, medium if needed to open the radiator drain plug carefully.
- Drain about 1 gallon of coolant, or until the level is below the thermostat housing.
- Close the radiator drain plug by hand, then snug gently with the flat-blade screwdriver, medium if needed. Do not overtighten plastic parts.
Step 4: Locate the Thermostat Housing
- Follow the lower radiator hose from the radiator toward the engine.
- The hose connects to the thermostat housing on the engine side.
- Use clean shop towels around the area to catch small coolant spills.
Step 5: Remove the Lower Radiator Hose from the Housing
- Use pliers, hose clamp type to squeeze the spring clamp tabs together.
- Slide the clamp back along the hose.
- Twist the hose gently by hand to break it loose.
- If the hose is stuck, use a flat-blade screwdriver, medium very carefully between the hose and housing edge. Do not gouge the aluminum or plastic sealing surface.
- Pull the hose off and aim any coolant into the drain pan, 2-gallon minimum.
- Twist first, then pull.
Step 6: Remove the Thermostat Housing
- Use a 12mm socket, 3/8-inch extension, 6-inch, and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the thermostat housing bolts.
- Hold the housing while removing the last bolt so it does not drop.
- Pull the housing straight away from the engine.
- Remove the old thermostat and seal by hand.
- Note the thermostat direction before removal. The spring side normally faces the engine.
Step 7: Clean the Sealing Surfaces
- Use a plastic scraper to remove old gasket residue from the housing and engine sealing surface.
- Wipe the area with clean shop towels.
- Do not use a metal scraper. It can scratch the sealing surface and cause leaks.
- Make sure no debris falls into the coolant passage.
Step 8: Install the New Thermostat
- Install the engine coolant thermostat in the same direction as the old one.
- Install the thermostat seal or gasket fully seated in its groove.
- If the thermostat has a small jiggle valve or air bleed hole, position it at the top, near the 12 o’clock position.
- Correct direction prevents overheating.
Step 9: Reinstall the Thermostat Housing
- Place the housing squarely against the engine by hand.
- Start all housing bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Use a 12mm socket, 3/8-inch extension, 6-inch, and 3/8-inch ratchet to snug the bolts evenly.
- Use a torque wrench, 5-30 Nm range to tighten the thermostat housing bolts to Torque to 20 Nm (15 ft-lbs).
Step 10: Reconnect the Lower Radiator Hose
- Push the lower radiator hose fully onto the thermostat housing by hand.
- Use pliers, hose clamp type to move the spring clamp back to its original position.
- Make sure the clamp sits behind the raised bead on the housing neck.
Step 11: Refill the Cooling System
- Confirm the radiator drain plug is closed.
- Use a coolant spill-free funnel kit and funnel, long neck at the coolant fill point.
- Add Hyundai-compatible phosphate HOAT coolant concentrate or premix.
- If using concentrate, mix it 50/50 with distilled water before pouring.
- Fill slowly until the coolant level stabilizes.
Step 12: Bleed Air from the Cooling System
- Leave the coolant spill-free funnel kit installed.
- Start the engine and set the cabin heater to maximum heat with the fan on low.
- Let the engine idle while watching the funnel level.
- Use clean shop towels to wipe small spills immediately.
- As air bubbles come out, add coolant to keep the funnel from running empty.
- Wait until the upper radiator hose gets warm and the radiator fan cycles once, if conditions allow.
- Do not let the temperature gauge climb above normal. Shut the engine off if it starts overheating.
Step 13: Check for Leaks
- With the engine idling, use a flashlight if available and inspect the thermostat housing, lower radiator hose, and drain plug area.
- If coolant leaks from the hose, shut the engine off and use pliers, hose clamp type to reposition the clamp after it cools.
- If coolant leaks from the housing, shut the engine off, let it cool, and recheck gasket seating and bolt torque with the torque wrench, 5-30 Nm range.
Step 14: Reinstall the Splash Shield
- After leak checking, shut the engine off and let hot parts cool enough to work safely.
- Use a plastic trim clip remover to align any plastic clips.
- Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to reinstall the lower engine splash shield bolts.
- Tighten splash shield bolts snug only. These small bolts do not need heavy force.
Step 15: Lower the Vehicle
- Use a floor jack, rated 2-ton minimum to raise your Tucson slightly off the jack stands.
- Remove the jack stands, rated 2-ton minimum.
- Lower the vehicle slowly to the ground.
- Remove the wheel chocks.

- ✅ Let the engine cool completely, then recheck the coolant level in the reservoir.
- ✅ Top off to the proper mark using the same coolant mixture.
