🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the Front Lower Splash Shield
- Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
- Use the floor jack 2-ton minimum to raise the front of your Odyssey if you need more room.
- Place jack stands 2-ton minimum under the proper front support points.
- Use a Phillips screwdriver #2 and trim clip removal tool to remove the lower splash shield fasteners.
- Set the splash shield and clips aside in order.
- Tip: Take a phone photo first.
Step 2: Relieve Cooling System Pressure
- Make sure the engine is cold to the touch.
- Slowly loosen the radiator cap or coolant reservoir cap by hand to release any leftover pressure.
- Remove the cap fully only after you are sure there is no pressure.
Step 3: Drain Some Coolant
- Place the drain pan 2-gallon minimum under the radiator drain area.
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver 1/4-inch to carefully open the radiator drain plug.
- Drain enough coolant so the level is below the thermostat housing. Usually 1 gallon is enough.
- Close the radiator drain plug by hand, then snug it gently with the flat-blade screwdriver 1/4-inch.
- If replacing the drain plug washer, install the new coolant drain plug washer.
- Tip: Do not overtighten plastic drain plugs.
Step 4: Locate the Thermostat Housing
- Follow the lower radiator hose to the engine. The thermostat sits inside the housing where this hose attaches.
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver 1/4-inch or hose clamp pliers to loosen the lower radiator hose clamp, depending on clamp style.
- Slide the clamp back on the hose.
Step 5: Remove the Lower Radiator Hose
- Twist the hose gently by hand to break it loose from the thermostat housing.
- If stuck, use the flat-blade screwdriver 1/4-inch carefully between the hose and housing edge. Do not cut or puncture the hose.
- Pull the hose off and aim it toward the drain pan 2-gallon minimum.
- Use shop towels to catch spills.
Step 6: Remove the Thermostat Housing
- Use a 10mm socket, 3/8-inch ratchet, and 3/8-inch extension 6-inch to remove the thermostat housing bolts.
- Keep the bolts together so they go back in the same location.
- Pull the housing straight off the engine.
- Remove the thermostat and old rubber seal/O-ring by hand.
- Tip: Note the thermostat direction before removal.
Step 7: Clean the Sealing Surfaces
- Use shop towels to wipe the thermostat housing and engine sealing surfaces clean.
- Do not gouge the aluminum surface with sharp tools.
- Make sure the old rubber seal/O-ring is fully removed.
Step 8: Install the New Thermostat
- Install the new thermostat rubber seal/O-ring onto the new engine coolant thermostat.
- Place the thermostat into the engine in the same direction as the old one.
- If the thermostat has a small jiggle valve or bleed pin, position it at the top. This helps trapped air escape.
- Hold the thermostat seated squarely by hand.
Step 9: Reinstall the Thermostat Housing
- Position the thermostat housing over the thermostat without shifting the seal.
- Start the bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Use the 10mm socket, 3/8-inch ratchet, and 3/8-inch extension 6-inch to snug the bolts evenly.
- Use the torque wrench 5-50 Nm to tighten the housing bolts to Torque to 12 Nm (9 ft-lbs).
Step 10: Reinstall the Lower Radiator Hose
- Slide the lower radiator hose fully onto the thermostat housing neck by hand.
- Use hose clamp pliers or a flat-blade screwdriver 1/4-inch to move the clamp back to its original position.
- Make sure the hose is not twisted and the clamp sits behind the raised lip of the housing neck.
Step 11: Refill the Cooling System
- Install the funnel spill-free coolant filling kit on the radiator or coolant fill neck.
- Pour Honda-compatible blue premixed coolant slowly into the funnel.
- Pause often so air can bubble out.
- Fill until the coolant level stays steady.
Step 12: Bleed Air From the Cooling System
- Set the cabin heat to maximum hot and the blower to low.
- Start the engine and let it idle with the funnel spill-free coolant filling kit installed.
- Watch for air bubbles rising through the funnel.
- As the engine warms up, the upper radiator hose will get hot when the thermostat opens.
- Add more Honda-compatible blue premixed coolant as the level drops.
- Do not rev the engine hard while bleeding.
- Continue until the radiator fans cycle on and off once and bubbles stop.
Step 13: Cap the System and Reinstall the Splash Shield
- Turn the engine off and let it cool for several minutes.
- Remove the funnel spill-free coolant filling kit according to its instructions.
- Install the radiator cap or coolant reservoir cap by hand.
- Use the Phillips screwdriver #2 and trim clip removal tool to reinstall the lower splash shield.
- If any 10mm splash shield bolts were removed, use the 10mm socket and tighten them snugly.
Step 14: Lower the Vehicle
- Use the floor jack 2-ton minimum to raise the front slightly off the jack stands.
- Remove the jack stands 2-ton minimum.
- Lower your Odyssey slowly to the ground.
- Remove the wheel chocks.
