🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Drain coolant
- Raise the front of the Explorer with a floor jack and support it with jack stands.
- Use a drain pan under the radiator area and open the coolant drain if equipped, or disconnect the lower radiator hose carefully.
- Drain enough coolant so the level drops below the thermostat housing.
- Keep spills cleaned up right away.
Step 2: Remove intake ducting and access covers
- Use the 8mm socket and ratchet to remove the air intake duct or any covers blocking access to the thermostat housing.
- Move the ducting aside without damaging clamps or sensors.
Step 3: Disconnect hoses from thermostat housing
- Use pliers to release the hose clamps.
- Twist and pull the coolant hoses free from the thermostat housing.
- Expect some coolant to spill, so keep the drain pan under the area.
Step 4: Remove thermostat housing
- Use the 10mm socket, short extension, and ratchet to remove the thermostat housing bolts.
- Lift the housing off carefully.
- Remove the old gasket or seal and clean the mounting surface with a shop towel.
Step 5: Install new thermostat
- Remove the old thermostat from the housing if it is separate, or replace the thermostat and housing assembly if your replacement is built that way.
- Install the new thermostat in the correct orientation. The spring side normally faces the engine.
- Install the new gasket or seal.
- Do not reuse a flattened seal.
Step 6: Reinstall housing and tighten bolts
- Set the housing in place by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Use the 10mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the housing bolts.
- Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).
Step 7: Reconnect hoses and intake ducting
- Push the coolant hoses fully onto the housing ports.
- Use pliers to reinstall the hose clamps in their original positions.
- Reinstall the intake ducting and tighten the 8mm socket fasteners.
Step 8: Refill coolant
- Close the drain point if it was opened.
- Use a funnel to fill the cooling system with the correct coolant mix.
- Fill the reservoir to the marked line.
Step 9: Bleed air from the system
- Start the engine with the reservoir cap off and let it idle.
- Turn the heater to full hot and the fan to low.
- Watch for the coolant level to drop as air escapes. Add coolant as needed.
- When the upper hose gets hot and cabin heat is steady, the thermostat has opened.
- Install the reservoir cap once the level stabilizes.
Step 10: Final check
- Inspect around the thermostat housing and hose connections for leaks.
- Lower the vehicle.
- After a short road test, recheck the coolant level when the engine is cold.
