Replacing the thermostat on your CX-5 involves draining part of the engine coolant, removing the thermostat housing, installing a new thermostat and seal, then refilling and bleeding the cooling system. The thermostat controls coolant flow so the engine warms up correctly and does not overheat.

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your CX-5 on level ground and let the engine cool for at least 3 hours.
  • Set the parking brake and place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • Open the hood and remove the engine cover by pulling it upward by hand.
  • Use a 10mm socket to disconnect the negative battery cable. Move it aside so it cannot touch the battery post.
  • If raising the front, use a floor jack rated 2-ton minimum and support the vehicle with jack stands rated 2-ton minimum.
  • A thermostat is a temperature-controlled valve. It opens when the engine warms up so coolant can flow through the radiator.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the lower splash shield

  • Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
  • Use a trim clip removal tool to remove the plastic push clips from the lower engine splash shield.
  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the splash shield bolts.
  • Lower the shield and set it aside.
  • Keep clips organized.

Step 2: Drain the engine coolant

  • Place a drain pan 10-liter minimum under the radiator drain area.
  • Slowly remove the coolant reservoir cap by hand to release any remaining pressure.
  • Use a flat-blade screwdriver if needed to open the radiator drain plug carefully.
  • Let the coolant drain until flow slows to a drip.
  • Close the radiator drain plug by hand, then snug it gently with the flat-blade screwdriver if needed. Do not overtighten plastic parts.

Step 3: Access the thermostat housing

  • Locate the lower radiator hose where it connects to the thermostat housing on the engine side.
  • Use hose clamp pliers to squeeze the spring clamp tabs and slide the clamp back on the hose.
  • Twist the hose gently by hand to break it loose, then pull it off the thermostat housing.
  • If stuck, use a flat-blade screwdriver carefully at the hose edge only. Do not gouge the aluminum housing.
  • A spring clamp is the factory hose clamp that uses spring tension instead of a screw.

Step 4: Remove the thermostat housing

  • Use a 10mm socket, 3/8-inch extension, and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the thermostat housing bolts.
  • Pull the thermostat housing straight off by hand.
  • Remove the old thermostat and seal from the housing or engine opening.
  • Use shop towels to catch leftover coolant.
  • Note the thermostat direction.

Step 5: Clean the sealing surfaces

  • Use shop towels to wipe the thermostat housing and engine sealing surface clean.
  • Do not scratch the sealing surface with metal tools.
  • Check that no old gasket or O-ring material remains.
  • The sealing surface is the flat area where the gasket or O-ring prevents leaks.

Step 6: Install the new thermostat

  • Install the new engine thermostat in the same direction as the old one.
  • Install the new thermostat housing gasket or O-ring seal.
  • Make sure the seal sits flat and is not pinched.
  • If the thermostat has a small jiggle valve, position it upward if the design allows.
  • A jiggle valve is a small loose pin that helps trapped air escape during filling.

Step 7: Reinstall the thermostat housing

  • Place the thermostat housing back onto the engine by hand.
  • Start all housing bolts by hand first to prevent cross-threading.
  • Use a 10mm socket, 3/8-inch extension, and torque wrench rated 5-60 Nm to tighten the thermostat housing bolts evenly.
  • Torque to 8-10 Nm (71-89 in-lbs).
  • Small bolts strip easily.

Step 8: Reconnect the lower radiator hose

  • Push the lower radiator hose fully onto the thermostat housing by hand.
  • Use hose clamp pliers to move the spring clamp back to its original position.
  • Confirm the clamp sits behind the raised bead on the hose neck.
  • The raised bead is the lip that helps keep the hose from slipping off.

Step 9: Refill the cooling system

  • Install a coolant funnel kit onto the coolant reservoir or radiator fill point as applicable.
  • Add Mazda-compatible FL22 long-life coolant slowly until the reservoir reaches the full mark.
  • If using concentrate, mix it with distilled water at the correct ratio before filling.
  • Squeeze the upper and lower radiator hoses gently by hand several times to help push air out.
  • Pour slowly to reduce air pockets.

Step 10: Reconnect the battery

  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to reconnect the negative battery cable.
  • Tighten the terminal until it does not move by hand.
  • Torque to 4-6 Nm (35-53 in-lbs).

Step 11: Bleed air from the cooling system

  • Start the engine and let it idle with the coolant funnel kit installed.
  • Set the cabin heater to maximum temperature and low fan speed using the climate controls.
  • Watch the coolant level in the funnel and add coolant as the level drops.
  • Let the engine warm up until the radiator fan cycles on and warm air comes from the vents.
  • Use safety glasses and keep hands clear of the cooling fan and belts.
  • When bubbles stop rising, shut the engine off and let it cool.

Step 12: Reinstall the lower splash shield

  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to reinstall the splash shield bolts.
  • Use a trim clip removal tool by hand to help seat the plastic clips if needed.
  • Torque splash shield bolts to 7-9 Nm (62-80 in-lbs).

Step 13: Final coolant level check

  • After the engine fully cools, check the coolant reservoir level by sight.
  • Add Mazda-compatible FL22 long-life coolant to the full mark if needed.
  • Use shop towels to wipe away spills so future leaks are easier to spot.

  • ✅ Start your CX-5 and check around the thermostat housing and lower radiator hose for leaks.
  • ✅ Watch the temperature gauge during the first drive. It should stay near the normal middle range.
  • ✅ After the first full heat-up and cool-down cycle, recheck coolant level and top off if needed.
  • ✅ If the heater blows cold air or the temperature rises too high, stop driving and re-bleed the cooling system.
  • ✅ Dispose of old coolant safely. Do not pour it on the ground or into drains.
