📋 Before You Begin
- Park your HR-V on level ground and let the engine cool completely.
- Set the parking brake and place the transmission in Park.
- Turn the climate temperature control to full HOT before shutting the vehicle off. This helps coolant circulate through the heater core during bleeding.
- Open the hood and remove the engine cover if equipped by lifting it upward by hand.
- Use a 10mm socket to disconnect the negative battery cable.
- The thermostat is located at the lower coolant outlet where the lower radiator hose connects to the engine.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the Radiator Cap
- Make sure the engine is completely cool.
- Place a shop towel over the radiator cap.
- Press down and turn the radiator cap counterclockwise by hand to the first stop.
- Wait a few seconds, then remove it fully by hand.
- Cold engine only.
Step 2: Drain Some Coolant
- Place a 2-gallon minimum drain pan under the radiator drain area.
- Use your hand or a flathead screwdriver to open the radiator drain plug at the bottom of the radiator.
- Drain about 1 gallon of coolant, or enough so the level drops below the thermostat housing.
- Close the radiator drain plug by hand until snug. Do not overtighten the plastic plug.
- If the drain plug seal is damaged, replace the seal before closing the plug.
Step 3: Remove the Lower Radiator Hose from the Thermostat Housing
- Find the lower radiator hose where it connects to the thermostat housing on the engine.
- Use hose clamp pliers to squeeze the spring clamp tabs together.
- Slide the clamp back several inches onto the hose.
- Use your hand to twist the hose gently to break it loose.
- If stuck, use a flathead screwdriver carefully between the hose and housing to loosen the hose edge only.
- Pull the hose off the thermostat housing and aim it toward the drain pan.
- A spring clamp is the factory metal clamp that squeezes the hose tight without a screw.
Step 4: Remove the Thermostat Housing
- Use a 10mm socket, 3-inch extension, and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the thermostat housing bolts.
- Keep one hand on the housing while removing the last bolt so it does not fall.
- Pull the thermostat housing straight away from the engine by hand.
- Catch any remaining coolant with the drain pan and shop towels.
Step 5: Remove the Old Thermostat
- Pull the old thermostat out of the engine opening by hand.
- Note the direction it faces before removing it.
- Remove the old rubber seal/O-ring by hand.
- The jiggle valve, if present, is the small loose pin in the thermostat that lets trapped air escape.
Step 6: Clean the Sealing Surfaces
- Use a plastic scraper to gently clean the thermostat housing sealing surface.
- Use a plastic scraper to clean the engine-side sealing surface.
- Wipe both surfaces with shop towels until clean and dry.
- Do not use a metal scraper because it can gouge the aluminum sealing surface.
Step 7: Install the New Thermostat and Seal
- Install the new rubber seal/O-ring onto the new thermostat by hand.
- Place the thermostat into the engine opening in the same direction as the original.
- If the thermostat has a jiggle valve, position it at the top, near the 12 o’clock position.
- Make sure the thermostat sits flat and the seal is not pinched.
Step 8: Reinstall the Thermostat Housing
- Place the thermostat housing over the thermostat by hand.
- Start the thermostat housing bolts by hand to avoid cross-threading.
- Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to snug the bolts evenly.
- Use a torque wrench with a 10mm socket to tighten the housing bolts to 12 Nm (106 in-lbs).
Step 9: Reinstall the Lower Radiator Hose
- Push the lower radiator hose fully onto the thermostat housing by hand.
- Use hose clamp pliers to squeeze the spring clamp tabs.
- Slide the clamp back to its original mark on the hose.
- Release the clamp and confirm it sits squarely behind the raised bead on the housing.
Step 10: Refill the Cooling System
- Install a spill-free funnel with the correct adapter into the radiator filler neck.
- Pour Honda-compatible blue premixed coolant into the funnel until the radiator is full.
- Fill the coolant reservoir to the MAX line by hand using the same coolant.
- A spill-free funnel keeps coolant above the radiator opening so air bubbles can escape while the engine warms up.
Step 11: Bleed Air from the Cooling System
- Use a 10mm socket to reconnect the negative battery cable.
- Start the engine and let it idle with the radiator cap off and the spill-free funnel installed.
- Set the heater to full HOT and blower to low using the climate controls.
- Watch the coolant level in the funnel and add coolant as the level drops.
- Let the engine idle until the radiator fan cycles on at least once.
- Use safety glasses and gloves while watching for leaks around the thermostat housing and lower hose.
- Squeeze the upper radiator hose gently by hand with gloves to help move trapped air toward the funnel.
Step 12: Install the Radiator Cap
- Turn the engine off and let the coolant settle for a few minutes.
- Use the spill-free funnel stopper to plug the funnel.
- Remove the funnel carefully by hand.
- Top off the radiator to the neck with Honda-compatible blue premixed coolant if needed.
- Install the radiator cap by hand and turn it clockwise until fully locked.
Step 13: Final Leak Check
- Start the engine again and let it idle for 2-3 minutes.
- Use safety glasses and a flashlight if available to inspect the thermostat housing, lower hose, and radiator drain plug.
- Check that warm air comes from the cabin vents with the heat set to full HOT.
- Shut the engine off and let it cool completely.
- Once cool, check the coolant reservoir level and add Honda-compatible blue premixed coolant to the MAX line if needed.

- Drive your HR-V for 10-15 minutes while watching the temperature gauge.
- After the engine fully cools, recheck the coolant reservoir level and top off if needed.
- Inspect under the vehicle for coolant drips.
