⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Allow the engine to become completely cold before opening the cooling system. Hot coolant can cause severe burns.
- Support your Optima with jack stands. Never work underneath a vehicle supported only by a floor jack.
- Coolant is poisonous. Keep it away from children and animals, and clean spills immediately.
- Do not allow coolant to contact the accessory drive belt or electrical connectors.
- Battery disconnection is not normally required for this repair.
- Do not mix conventional green coolant with Kia-compatible phosphate-based coolant.

📋 Before You Begin
- Park your Optima on level ground, select Park, apply the parking brake, and let the engine cool completely.
- Place wheel chocks securely behind both rear tires.
- Record the coolant temperature or warning symptoms before starting so you can compare them after the repair.
- No infotainment service mode or scan-tool command is required.
- Use a replacement thermostat supplied with its correct molded seal. Do not apply RTV silicone unless the replacement-part instructions specifically require it.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Raise and Support the Front
- Use the floor jack at the front-center lifting point and raise your Optima enough to reach the lower engine cover.
- Place the jack stands beneath the reinforced front side support points, then lower the vehicle carefully onto them.
- Wear safety glasses whenever you are underneath the vehicle.
Step 2: Remove the Lower Engine Cover
- Use the 10mm socket, ratchet, and Phillips No. 2 screwdriver to remove the bolts and retainers holding the lower engine cover.
- Support the cover with one hand while removing the final fastener, then lower it out of the way.
- Keep the fasteners arranged by location because their lengths may differ.
Step 3: Drain the Coolant
- Confirm the engine is cold, then slowly remove the radiator cap by hand.
- Position the 10-liter drain pan below the radiator drain fitting.
- Open the plastic radiator drain fitting carefully by hand. If needed, use the 6mm flat-blade screwdriver with very light pressure.
- Allow the coolant to drain until the flow stops, then close the fitting by hand until snug. Do not overtighten the plastic fitting.
- Save reusable coolant only in a clean container.
Step 4: Disconnect the Lower Radiator Hose
- Locate the thermostat coolant inlet where the lower radiator hose attaches to the engine.
- Use hose-clamp pliers to compress the spring clamp and slide it several centimeters back along the hose.
- Use your gloved hands to twist the hose gently and pull it from the inlet. Catch the remaining coolant in the drain pan.
- If the hose is stuck, use the 6mm flat-blade screwdriver only to lift the hose edge slightly. Do not gouge the aluminum fitting.
Step 5: Remove the Thermostat Inlet
- Use the 12mm socket, extension, and ratchet to remove the coolant-inlet mounting bolts.
- Pull the inlet away from the engine carefully. Note the thermostat’s direction and the position of its air-bleed pin before removal.
- Remove the thermostat and its seal by hand.
- Some coolant will remain behind the inlet, so keep the 10-liter drain pan underneath the work area.
Step 6: Clean and Inspect the Sealing Surfaces
- Use the plastic gasket scraper and shop towels to remove old seal residue from the inlet and engine mating surfaces.
- Inspect the inlet for cracks, corrosion, and distortion. Replace it if damaged.
- Do not use a metal scraper or abrasive disc. Scratches can create a coolant leak.
Step 7: Install the New Thermostat
- Fit the new seal or O-ring onto the replacement thermostat by hand.
- Install the thermostat with the temperature-sensing wax element facing the engine.
- Position the air-bleed pin, also called the jiggle valve, at the top. This small valve lets trapped air escape during filling.
- Seat the thermostat and seal evenly. Do not pinch or twist the seal.
Step 8: Reinstall the Coolant Inlet
- Position the coolant inlet without disturbing the thermostat.
- Start all mounting bolts by hand to prevent crossed threads.
- Use the 12mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the inlet bolts evenly to 19.6 Nm (14 ft-lbs).
- Do not apply sealant to a molded rubber thermostat seal.
Step 9: Reconnect the Radiator Hose
- Push the lower radiator hose fully onto the inlet by hand until it reaches its original seated position.
- Use hose-clamp pliers to return the spring clamp to its original location behind the raised bead on the inlet.
- Check that the hose is not twisted and the clamp sits squarely around it.
Step 10: Refill the Cooling System
- Install the cooling-system spill-free funnel on the radiator filler neck. A spill-free funnel holds coolant above the radiator while trapped air escapes.
- Pour Kia-compatible 50/50 premixed coolant slowly into the funnel until the radiator remains full.
- Fill the coolant reservoir by hand to the “F” or “MAX” line.
- Do not exceed approximately 8 liters total. The actual refill amount will be lower if the engine block was not fully drained.
Step 11: Bleed Trapped Air
- With the spill-free funnel installed, start the engine and set the climate controls to maximum heat with the blower on low.
- Wear gloves and squeeze the upper radiator hose gently by hand several times as the engine warms.
- Add coolant through the funnel whenever the level drops. Keep hands, clothing, and tools away from the cooling fans and drive belt.
- Wait until the upper radiator hose becomes hot and cabin heat is steady, indicating the thermostat has opened.
- Watch for air bubbles and continue until bubbling stops. Do not allow the temperature gauge to enter the hot range.
Step 12: Close the System and Check for Leaks
- Turn the engine off and allow it to cool enough for safe handling.
- Use the spill-free funnel’s stopper, remove the funnel, and install the radiator cap securely by hand.
- Use a flashlight from the spill-free funnel kit area only if supplied; otherwise visually inspect the thermostat inlet, lower hose, and radiator drain fitting for leaks.
- Top the reservoir to the “F” or “MAX” line with 50/50 premixed coolant.
Step 13: Reinstall the Lower Engine Cover
- Lift the lower engine cover into position and start all retainers by hand.
- Use the 10mm socket, ratchet, and Phillips No. 2 screwdriver to secure the cover. Tighten the small cover fasteners only until snug.
- Use the floor jack to raise your Optima slightly, remove the jack stands, and lower the vehicle to the ground.

- Run the engine until fully warm and verify the temperature gauge remains stable near its normal position.
- Confirm that the cabin heater produces steady hot air. Intermittent heat can indicate trapped air or low coolant.
- Inspect the thermostat inlet, hose connection, radiator drain fitting, and ground beneath the vehicle for leaks.
- After the engine becomes completely cold, recheck the reservoir and adjust it to the “F” or “MAX” line.
- Recheck the coolant level for the next two or three cold-start cycles.
- If the engine overheats, shut it off immediately. Do not continue driving with an air pocket, leak, or inoperative cooling fan.
- Dispose of old coolant through an authorized recycling or hazardous-waste facility. Never pour it onto the ground or into a drain.
