🔧 Forte - Thermostat Replacement

The thermostat on your Forte sits inside the engine coolant inlet housing connected to the lower radiator hose. Replacing it requires draining the coolant, removing the inlet housing, installing the thermostat in the correct orientation, and bleeding trapped air from the cooling system.

• 📍 Park your Forte on level ground, select Park or first gear, apply the parking brake, and switch off the engine.
• 📍 Let the engine cool for several hours. The upper radiator hose should feel cool and soft before opening the system.
• 📍 Place wheel chocks behind both rear wheels.
• 📍 Note the coolant level before draining. Unexplained coolant loss may indicate another leak.
• 📍 No infotainment setting, scan tool command, or thermostat coding is required.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise and support the front

• Use the 2-ton floor jack at the front center lifting point to raise your Forte.
• Place the 2-ton jack stands beneath the reinforced front side support points, then lower the vehicle onto them.
• Keep the wheel chocks installed and gently push the body to confirm it is stable.

Step 2: Remove the lower engine cover

• Put on the safety glasses and nitrile mechanic gloves.
• Use the 10mm socket, 3/8-inch-drive extension, and ratchet to remove the lower-cover bolts.
• Use the plastic trim-clip removal tool or flat-blade screwdriver to release the plastic retainers.
• Lower the cover and place its fasteners together.

Step 3: Drain the cooling system

• Position the 10-litre drain pan under the radiator drain outlet.
• Slowly remove the cold radiator cap by hand.
• Open the radiator drain cock by hand and allow the coolant to drain completely into the pan. The drain cock is the small plastic valve near the bottom of the radiator.
• Close the drain cock by hand until seated. Do not tighten the plastic valve with pliers.

Step 4: Disconnect the lower radiator hose

• Follow the lower radiator hose to the coolant inlet housing on the engine.
• Use the hose-clamp pliers to compress the spring clamp, then slide the clamp several centimetres back along the hose.
• Use the 90-degree hose pick carefully between the hose and fitting to break the seal. Do not gouge the hose or aluminium fitting.
• Twist and pull the hose from the inlet housing. Catch the remaining coolant with the drain pan.
• Twist first; pulling alone can damage the hose.

Step 5: Remove the thermostat inlet housing

• Use the 10mm socket, extension, and ratchet to remove the coolant inlet housing bolts evenly.
• Pull the housing straight away from the engine by hand.
• Note the thermostat orientation before removing it. Use your fingers to remove the thermostat and its seal.
• Do not pry against the aluminium sealing surface with a screwdriver.

Step 6: Clean and inspect the sealing surfaces

• Use the plastic gasket scraper and shop towels to remove old seal residue from the housing and engine mating surfaces.
• Inspect the housing with the safety glasses in place. Replace it if cracked, badly corroded, or distorted.
• Inspect the lower radiator hose for swelling, splits, or a hardened end. Replace it if damaged.
• Do not apply RTV silicone unless the replacement thermostat instructions specifically require it; the formed seal normally installs dry.

Step 7: Install the new thermostat

• Fit the new thermostat seal in its correct groove by hand without twisting it.
• Install the thermostat with its spring toward the engine.
• Position the jiggle valve at the top. The jiggle valve is the small loose air-bleed pin in the thermostat flange.
• Hold the thermostat in place while positioning the inlet housing squarely against the engine.

Step 8: Tighten the inlet housing

• Start both housing bolts by hand to prevent cross-threading.
• Use the 10mm socket and ratchet to seat the bolts evenly.
• Use the 10mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the bolts evenly to 18.6-23.5 Nm (14-17 ft-lbs).
• Do not overtighten the aluminium housing or engine threads.

Step 9: Reconnect the lower radiator hose

• Push the hose fully over the housing neck by hand until it reaches its original seated position.
• Use the hose-clamp pliers to move the spring clamp back over the raised section of the housing neck.
• Confirm visually that the clamp sits squarely in its original imprint.

Step 10: Fill the cooling system

• Install the spill-free coolant funnel in the radiator filler neck.
• Use the 2-litre measuring jug to add Kia-compatible 50/50 coolant slowly until the radiator remains full.
• Fill the coolant reservoir to the “F” or full mark using the measuring jug.
• Gently squeeze the upper radiator hose by hand several times to release trapped air, then add coolant as the level drops.

Step 11: Bleed air from the cooling system

• Keep the spill-free coolant funnel attached and ensure the transmission is in Park or Neutral with the parking brake applied.
• Start the engine and set the cabin heater to maximum temperature with the blower on low.
• Allow the engine to idle while watching the funnel. Add coolant with the measuring jug whenever the level falls.
• Watch for bubbles and monitor the temperature gauge. Shut the engine off immediately if the gauge rises above normal or coolant begins forcefully surging from the funnel.
• When the upper radiator hose becomes hot and cabin heat remains steady, briefly hold engine speed near 2,000 rpm two or three times.
• Continue until bubbles stop, then switch off the engine and allow it to cool completely.

Step 12: Set the final coolant level

• Once completely cold, use the measuring jug to top off the radiator to the filler neck.
• Remove the spill-free coolant funnel and install the radiator cap firmly by hand.
• Adjust the reservoir to the “F” mark using the measuring jug.
• Use shop towels to clean spilled coolant and inspect the thermostat housing, hose, and radiator drain for leakage.

Step 13: Reinstall the lower cover

• Raise the lower cover into position by hand.
• Use the plastic trim-clip removal tool to reinstall the reusable plastic retainers.
• Use the 10mm socket and ratchet to snug the cover bolts. Do not overtighten the small cover fasteners.

Step 14: Lower the vehicle

• Use the 2-ton floor jack to lift your Forte slightly off the jack stands.
• Remove both 2-ton jack stands, then lower the vehicle slowly.
• Remove the wheel chocks only after the vehicle is fully on the ground.

• ✅ Start the cold engine and verify that the temperature gauge rises normally and then remains stable.
• ✅ Confirm that warm air comes steadily from the cabin vents.
• ✅ Inspect the thermostat housing, lower radiator hose, drain cock, and ground beneath the vehicle for leakage.

• ✅ Recheck the coolant level over the next several drives. A continuing drop indicates trapped air or a leak.
• ✅ Take used coolant to an authorised recycling or hazardous-waste collection facility. Never pour it onto the ground or into a drain.
