🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Let the Engine Cool and Remove Pressure Cap
- Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
- Make sure the engine is cold to the touch.
- Slowly remove the coolant reservoir pressure cap by hand.
- Cold engine only.
Step 2: Raise and Support the Front
- Use a floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to raise the front of the F-150 if you need more room underneath.
- Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the proper front frame support points.
- Gently lower the truck onto the stands and shake the truck lightly to confirm it is stable.
Step 3: Remove the Lower Splash Shield
- Use a 8mm socket and ratchet to remove the lower splash shield fasteners.
- Use a plastic trim clip remover to release any plastic retainers.
- Set the shield and fasteners aside in order.
Step 4: Drain Some Coolant
- Place a drain pan 2-gallon minimum under the radiator drain area.
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver if needed to open the radiator drain petcock slowly.
- Drain about 1-1.5 gallons of coolant, or enough to lower the coolant level below the thermostat housing.
- Close the drain petcock by hand, then snug gently with the flat-blade screwdriver if needed.
- Do not overtighten plastic drains.
Step 5: Locate the Thermostat Housing
- Stand at the front of the engine bay and follow the lower radiator hose toward the engine.
- The thermostat is inside the housing where that hose connects to the engine.
- A thermostat housing is the cover that holds the thermostat in place and seals coolant inside.
Step 6: Remove the Lower Radiator Hose from the Housing
- Use hose clamp pliers to squeeze the spring clamp and slide it back onto the hose.
- Twist the hose gently by hand to break it loose.
- Pull the hose off the thermostat housing and aim it toward the drain pan.
- If the hose is stuck, use a flat-blade screwdriver carefully between the hose and housing lip without gouging the sealing surface.
- Twist first, pull second.
Step 7: Remove the Thermostat Housing Bolts
- Use a 10mm socket, 6-inch extension, and ratchet to remove the thermostat housing bolts.
- Keep the bolts together so they go back in the same locations.
- Pull the housing straight away from the engine.
- Expect some coolant to spill into the drain pan.
Step 8: Remove the Old Thermostat and Seal
- Remove the old thermostat by hand.
- Remove the old O-ring or gasket by hand.
- Use shop towels to clean the thermostat housing and engine sealing surfaces.
- Do not scrape aluminum sealing surfaces with metal tools.
Step 9: Install the New Thermostat
- Install the new engine thermostat with seal in the same orientation as the old one.
- Make sure the seal sits flat and is not twisted.
- If the thermostat has a small jiggle valve or air bleed, position it at the top when possible.
- A jiggle valve is a tiny air-bleed valve that helps trapped air leave the engine.
Step 10: Reinstall the Thermostat Housing
- Position the housing squarely against the engine by hand.
- Start all bolts by hand first to prevent cross-threading.
- Use a 10mm socket, 6-inch extension, and ratchet to snug the bolts evenly.
- Use a torque wrench inch-pound range to tighten the thermostat housing bolts to Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).
- Even tightening prevents leaks.
Step 11: Reconnect the Lower Radiator Hose
- Push the hose fully onto the thermostat housing by hand.
- Use hose clamp pliers to move the spring clamp back to its original position.
- Make sure the clamp sits behind the raised bead on the housing neck.
Step 12: Reinstall the Lower Splash Shield
- Lift the splash shield into place by hand.
- Use the plastic trim clip remover to guide any retainers back into position.
- Use an 8mm socket and ratchet to reinstall the fasteners until snug.
Step 13: Refill the Cooling System
- Install the coolant funnel spill-free kit onto the coolant reservoir.
- Pour Motorcraft Yellow prediluted engine coolant 50/50 into the reservoir until the level reaches the cold fill range.
- Leave the funnel partially filled so the system can pull coolant in as air escapes.
Step 14: Bleed Air from the Cooling System
- Start the engine and let it idle with the coolant funnel spill-free kit installed.
- Set the cabin heater to full hot and the blower to low using the dash controls.
- Watch for bubbles in the funnel as the engine warms up.
- When the upper radiator hose gets warm and the heater blows hot air, the thermostat has opened.
- Add coolant as needed to keep the funnel from running empty.
- Use shop towels to clean any spilled coolant.
Step 15: Final Coolant Level Check
- Turn the engine off and let it cool completely.
- Remove the coolant funnel spill-free kit.
- Install the coolant reservoir pressure cap by hand.
- Once cool, check the reservoir level and top off to the cold fill mark if needed.
