🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Relieve cooling-system pressure
- Put on the nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
- Cover the cold radiator cap with a clean shop towel. Turn it slowly to the first stop, pause, and then remove it completely.
- Remove the coolant reservoir cap by hand.
Step 2: Drain enough coolant
- Position the 10-quart drain pan beneath the radiator drain area.
- Use the flat-tip screwdriver to open the radiator drain plug carefully if its slotted head requires a tool. Do not force or completely remove the plastic plug.
- Drain coolant until the level is below the thermostat housing. Closing the drain after approximately one gallon is normally sufficient.
- Tighten the plastic drain plug gently by hand. Do not use the torque wrench or overtighten it.
- Save clean coolant only in a clean container.
Step 3: Create working room
- Locate the lower radiator hose and follow it to the engine. The metal connection at the engine is the thermostat water inlet.
- If the air-intake duct blocks access, use the flat-tip screwdriver to loosen its clamp.
- Use the plastic trim-removal tool to release the duct retainers, then lift the duct out without pulling on attached wiring.
Step 4: Disconnect the lower radiator hose
- Place the drain pan directly below the thermostat water inlet.
- Use the hose-clamp pliers to compress the spring clamp and slide it several inches back on the hose. Hose-clamp pliers safely hold the spring clamp compressed.
- Twist the hose gently by hand to break its seal. If stuck, use the 90-degree hose pick only between the hose and fitting; do not puncture the hose or scratch the sealing surface.
- Pull the hose from the inlet and allow the remaining coolant to drain.
Step 5: Remove the thermostat water inlet
- Use the 10mm socket, extension, and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to loosen the water-inlet fasteners evenly.
- Support the inlet while removing the final fastener, then pull the inlet straight away from the engine.
- Note the thermostat’s installed direction and the position of its air-bleed valve before removing it.
- Remove the thermostat and rubber sealing ring by hand.
Step 6: Clean and inspect the sealing surfaces
- Use the plastic gasket scraper and clean shop towels to remove residue from the water inlet and engine mating surfaces.
- Do not use a metal scraper or allow debris to fall into the coolant passage.
- Inspect the water inlet for cracks, corrosion, or distortion. Replace it if damaged.
- Inspect the lower hose for swelling, cracking, oil contamination, or a hardened end. Replace it if damaged.
Step 7: Install the new thermostat
- Fit the new rubber sealing ring onto the new thermostat. Do not apply RTV silicone unless the replacement-part instructions explicitly require it.
- Install the thermostat with its spring side facing into the engine.
- Position the thermostat’s small air-bleed valve at the top, matching the original orientation.
- Hold the thermostat fully seated while positioning the water inlet over it.
Step 8: Reinstall the water inlet
- Start every water-inlet fastener by hand to prevent crossed threads.
- Use the 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to tighten the fasteners evenly in alternating passes.
- Use the inch-pound torque wrench and 10mm socket to tighten the water-inlet fasteners to 9.8 Nm (87 in-lbs).
- Do not apply extra force; the housing and engine threads can be damaged easily.
Step 9: Reconnect the lower radiator hose
- Push the lower radiator hose fully onto the water inlet by hand.
- Use the hose-clamp pliers to return the spring clamp to its original position behind the raised bead on the fitting.
- Confirm that the hose is not twisted and the clamp sits squarely around it.
Step 10: Reinstall the intake duct
- Position the intake duct and press its retainers into place by hand.
- Use the flat-tip screwdriver to tighten the duct clamp until secure. Do not crush the plastic duct.
Step 11: Refill the cooling system
- Attach the spill-free coolant funnel kit to the radiator filler neck.
- Pour Nissan-compatible blue premixed coolant into the funnel slowly. Premixed coolant already contains the correct water ratio and should not be diluted.
- Pause frequently so trapped air can escape. Continue until the radiator remains full.
- Fill the coolant reservoir by hand to the MAX line.
Step 12: Bleed trapped air
- Leave the spill-free coolant funnel installed and set the cabin heater to maximum heat with the blower on low.
- Start the engine and let it idle while watching the coolant level. Keep hands, tools, clothing, and the funnel clear of the cooling fans and belts.
- Add premixed coolant as the level falls. Small bubbles are normal while air leaves the system.
- Once the engine warms, briefly raise engine speed to approximately 2,000 rpm several times, then let it return to idle.
- Continue until warm air comes steadily from the vents, bubbling stops, and the upper radiator hose becomes warm.
- Shut off the engine immediately if the temperature warning appears, the heater suddenly turns cold, or coolant begins surging from the funnel.
Step 13: Close the cooling system
- Switch off the engine and allow the coolant level to settle.
- Use the spill-free coolant funnel kit’s stopper to remove the funnel without spilling coolant.
- Install the radiator cap by hand and turn it fully to the locked position.
- Use clean shop towels to wipe away spilled coolant, then reinstall the reservoir cap by hand.

- 🔍 Start the engine and inspect the thermostat housing, lower hose connection, and radiator drain plug for leakage.
- 🌡️ Confirm that the engine warms normally, the cabin heater produces steady heat, and no temperature warning appears.
