๐จ Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the Engine Cover and Under Cover Access
- Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove any plastic under-cover fasteners needed to access the lower radiator drain area.
- If the top engine appearance cover blocks your view, lift it straight up by hand from its rubber mounting grommets.
- Keep clips in a cup.
Step 2: Remove the Radiator Cap or Reservoir Cap
- Make sure the engine is cold.
- Use your hand with a shop towel to slowly loosen the radiator cap or coolant reservoir cap.
- This lets air enter so coolant drains smoothly.
Step 3: Drain Some Coolant
- Place the 2-gallon drain pan under the radiator drain cock.
- Use your hand or a flat-blade screwdriver to carefully open the radiator drain cock.
- Drain about 1 gallon of coolant, or enough so the coolant level drops below the thermostat housing.
- Close the radiator drain cock by hand until snug; do not overtighten plastic parts.
- If equipped with a drain plug gasket, replace it during reassembly.
Step 4: Locate the Thermostat Housing
- Follow the lower radiator hose toward the engine using your hand and eyes.
- The hose connects to the thermostat housing on the engine side.
- Use a shop towel to wipe the area clean so dirt does not enter the cooling system.
Step 5: Remove the Lower Radiator Hose from the Housing
- Use hose clamp pliers to squeeze the spring clamp tabs together.
- Slide the clamp back several inches on the hose.
- Use your hand to twist the hose gently to break it loose.
- If stuck, use a flat-blade screwdriver carefully between the hose and housing lip, but do not gouge the metal or tear the hose.
- Pull the hose off the thermostat housing and aim it toward the drain pan.
Step 6: Remove the Thermostat Housing
- Use a 10mm socket, 3/8-inch extension, and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the thermostat housing bolts.
- Support the housing with your hand as the last bolt comes out.
- Pull the housing straight away from the engine.
- Note the thermostat position before removing it.
Step 7: Remove the Old Thermostat and Seal
- Use your hand to remove the old thermostat from the engine opening.
- Remove the old gasket or rubber seal from the thermostat or housing.
- Use a plastic scraper to clean the sealing surface gently.
- Do not use a metal scraper because it can scratch the aluminum sealing surface and cause leaks.
Step 8: Install the New Thermostat
- Install the new thermostat gasket or seal onto the new engine thermostat.
- Place the thermostat into the engine opening in the same direction as the old one.
- If the thermostat has a jiggle valve, position it at the top. A jiggle valve is a small loose pin that helps trapped air escape.
- Match the old thermostat orientation.
Step 9: Reinstall the Thermostat Housing
- Set the thermostat housing squarely against the engine by hand.
- Start all bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Use a 10mm socket, 3/8-inch extension, and torque wrench to tighten the housing bolts evenly.
- Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).
- Do not overtighten; the housing and aluminum threads can be damaged.
Step 10: Reconnect the Lower Radiator Hose
- Push the lower radiator hose fully onto the thermostat housing neck by hand.
- Use hose clamp pliers to move the spring clamp back to its original position.
- Make sure the clamp sits behind the raised lip on the housing.
Step 11: Refill the Cooling System
- Install the coolant spill-free funnel kit at the radiator filler neck or coolant reservoir opening as applicable.
- Use a long-neck funnel to add Toyota-compatible long-life coolant, premixed 50/50 slowly.
- Fill until the coolant level reaches the proper full mark or the funnel level stays steady.
- Squeeze the upper and lower radiator hoses by hand several times to help push out trapped air.
Step 12: Bleed Air from the Cooling System
- Leave the spill-free funnel kit installed.
- Start the engine and let it idle with the cabin heater set to full hot and fan on low.
- Watch the coolant level in the funnel and add coolant as the level drops.
- Let the engine idle until the radiator fan cycles on and warm air blows from the vents.
- Use safety glasses and keep hands away from belts and fans.
- Install the cap once bubbles stop and the level is stable.
Step 13: Reinstall Covers
- Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to reinstall any under-cover fasteners removed earlier.
- Push the engine appearance cover back onto its rubber grommets by hand if removed.
- Wipe spilled coolant with shop towels.

- โ Let the engine reach normal temperature and confirm the temperature gauge stays steady near the middle.
- ๐ Check around the thermostat housing, lower hose, and radiator drain cock for leaks.
