๐ Before You Begin
- ๐ Park your Highlander on level ground and let the engine cool fully.
- ๐งฑ Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels before lifting the front.
- ๐งค Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves before handling coolant.
- ๐ A thermostat housing is the small metal coolant outlet that holds the thermostat in place.
- ๐ A torque wrench tightens bolts to a measured amount so they are not too loose or too tight.
- ๐ A spill-free coolant funnel attaches to the radiator or reservoir neck and helps remove trapped air while filling.
๐จ Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Raise and Secure the Front
- Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum at the front center jacking point to raise the front of your Highlander.
- Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the front support points.
- Gently lower the vehicle onto the jack stands and shake it lightly to confirm it is stable.
- Never crawl under an unsupported vehicle.
Step 2: Remove the Lower Engine Cover
- Use the 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the lower splash shield bolts.
- Use the trim clip removal tool to remove plastic clips without breaking them.
- Set the shield, bolts, and clips aside in order.
Step 3: Drain Some Coolant
- Place the drain pan 2-gallon minimum under the radiator drain area.
- Make sure the engine is cool, then slowly remove the coolant reservoir/radiator cap by hand.
- Use the flat-blade screwdriver if needed to carefully open the radiator drain plug.
- Drain about 1 gallon of coolant, or enough that the thermostat housing area will not spill heavily.
- Close the radiator drain plug by hand until snug. Do not overtighten.
Step 4: Access the Thermostat Housing
- The thermostat is mounted at the engine end of the lower radiator hose on the 2.7L engine.
- Use hose clamp pliers to compress the lower radiator hose clamp.
- Slide the clamp back on the hose.
- Twist the hose gently by hand to break it loose, then pull it off the thermostat housing.
- Use shop towels to catch remaining coolant.
- Twist first, then pull straight off.
Step 5: Remove the Thermostat Housing
- Use the 12mm socket, 3/8-inch drive ratchet, and 3/8-inch drive 6-inch extension to remove the thermostat housing bolts.
- Pull the thermostat housing away from the engine carefully.
- Note the thermostat position before removal. The small jiggle valve/air bleed should face upward when applicable.
Step 6: Remove the Old Thermostat
- Pull the old thermostat out by hand.
- Remove the old gasket/O-ring from the thermostat.
- Use shop towels to clean the sealing surfaces.
- Do not gouge the aluminum sealing surface with metal tools.
Step 7: Install the New Thermostat
- Install the new thermostat gasket/O-ring onto the new engine coolant thermostat.
- Place the thermostat into the engine in the same direction as the old one.
- If the thermostat has a jiggle valve, position it at the top.
- The spring side usually faces the engine.
Step 8: Reinstall the Thermostat Housing
- Position the thermostat housing squarely over the thermostat.
- Start the bolts by hand to avoid cross-threading.
- Use the 12mm socket, 3/8-inch drive ratchet, and 3/8-inch drive 6-inch extension to snug the bolts evenly.
- Use the torque wrench inch-pound range to tighten the thermostat housing bolts to Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).
Step 9: Reconnect the Lower Radiator Hose
- Push the lower radiator hose fully onto the thermostat housing by hand.
- Use hose clamp pliers to move the clamp back to its original position.
- Confirm the clamp sits behind the raised bead on the housing neck.
Step 10: Refill the Cooling System
- Install the spill-free coolant funnel kit at the fill point.
- Pour in Toyota Super Long Life Coolant or equivalent pink premixed coolant slowly.
- Fill until the funnel level stays steady.
- Squeeze the upper and lower radiator hoses by hand several times to help release trapped air.
Step 11: Bleed Air from the Cooling System
- Start the engine and leave the transmission in Park.
- Set the cabin heater to maximum temperature and low fan speed using the climate controls.
- Watch the coolant level in the spill-free coolant funnel kit.
- Add coolant as the level drops.
- Let the engine warm up until the radiator fans cycle on and warm air comes from the vents.
- Use safety glasses and keep hands clear of fans and belts.
Step 12: Check for Leaks
- Use shop towels to dry the thermostat housing area.
- Inspect the hose connection, thermostat housing, and radiator drain plug for leaks.
- If leaking at the housing, shut the engine off, let it cool, and recheck gasket seating and bolt torque.
Step 13: Reinstall the Lower Engine Cover
- Use the trim clip removal tool to reinstall plastic clips.
- Use the 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to reinstall splash shield bolts.
- Tighten splash shield fasteners snugly by hand tool only.
Step 14: Lower the Vehicle
- Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to raise the front slightly off the jack stands.
- Remove the jack stands rated 3-ton minimum.
- Lower your Highlander slowly to the ground.

- โ Road test your Highlander for 10-15 minutes while watching the temperature gauge.
- โ Let the engine cool completely, then recheck coolant level and top off if needed.
- โ Confirm the heater blows warm air at idle and while driving.
- โ Recheck the thermostat housing and lower hose area for any dried coolant residue or wetness.
