🔧 Silverado 1500 - Thermostat Replacement

Replace the thermostat by draining some coolant, removing the lower radiator hose and thermostat housing, then installing the new thermostat and seal. I’d use the Motorad 523-190 thermostat. It matches the stock-style 187°F rating and includes the seal.

Assumption: These steps apply to the stock 5.3L cooling system.

  • ⚠️ Work only when the engine is completely cold. Hot coolant can cause severe burns.
  • 🧤 Wear gloves and safety glasses. Coolant is poisonous and slippery.
  • 🐾 Keep drained coolant away from children and animals. Its sweet smell attracts pets.
  • 🛑 Never open the coolant reservoir cap while the engine is warm.
  • 🔋 Battery disconnection isn’t normally required for this repair.
  • ♻️ Capture and recycle the old coolant. Don’t pour it onto the ground or into a drain.

Don’t install a 160°F or 180°F racing thermostat on an otherwise stock Silverado 1500. Colder isn’t automatically better. That myth has sold plenty of unnecessary parts.


📋 Before You Begin

  • 📍 Park on level ground, select Park, apply the parking brake, and let the engine become completely cold.
  • 🌡️ Set the heater temperature to full hot before switching off the ignition.
  • 🧹 Clean dirt from around the coolant reservoir cap and thermostat housing.
  • 🪣 Position the drain pan beneath the lower radiator hose area.
  • 🔎 Check the replacement thermostat and new seal before draining the cooling system.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the upper cover

  • Use the plastic trim-removal tool to release any push retainers securing the upper radiator sight shield.
  • Lift the shield out and store its retainers safely.
  • Remove the coolant reservoir cap slowly by hand only after confirming the engine is cold.

Step 2: Drain enough coolant

  • Place the large drain pan beneath the lower radiator hose connection.
  • If an accessible radiator drain is fitted, open it slowly by hand and drain approximately one gallon.
  • If no usable drain is accessible, use the hose-clamp pliers to move the lower hose clamp back. Carefully loosen the hose until coolant begins flowing into the pan.
  • Close the drain or reinstall the hose once the coolant level is below the thermostat housing.
  • Loosen the hose slowly to control the flow.

Step 3: Locate the thermostat housing

  • Follow the lower radiator hose toward the engine. It connects to the thermostat housing at the front of the water pump.
  • Use clean shop towels to clean around the housing before opening it.

Step 4: Disconnect the lower radiator hose

  • Use the hose-clamp pliers to compress the spring clamp and slide it several inches away from the housing.
  • Twist the hose gently by hand to break the seal, then pull it from the housing.
  • Catch the remaining coolant with the large drain pan.
  • Don’t pry aggressively against the housing. It can be damaged surprisingly easily.

Step 5: Remove the thermostat housing

  • Use the 10mm socket, 3-inch extension, and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the two housing bolts.
  • Support the housing while removing the final bolt.
  • Pull the housing straight away from the water pump.
  • Note the thermostat’s installed direction before removing it.

Step 6: Remove the old thermostat and seal

  • Pull the thermostat and rubber seal from the opening by hand.
  • Use the plastic gasket scraper to remove stuck rubber or residue without scratching the sealing surface.
  • Use clean shop towels to wipe the housing and water-pump surfaces clean and dry.
  • Inspect the housing for cracks, pitting, or a damaged hose neck. Replace it if any damage is present.

Step 7: Install the new thermostat

  • Fit the supplied new seal onto the Motorad 523-190 thermostat.
  • Install the thermostat in the same direction as the original, with the spring and sensing element facing the engine.
  • Make sure the thermostat and seal sit completely flat in their recess.
  • Don’t apply RTV silicone unless the replacement-part instructions specifically require it.
  • A pinched seal will leak immediately.

Step 8: Reinstall the housing

  • Position the housing over the thermostat without disturbing the seal.
  • Start both bolts several turns by hand to prevent cross-threading.
  • Use the 10mm socket and 5-30 ft-lb torque wrench to tighten the bolts evenly.
  • Torque the thermostat housing bolts to 15 Nm (11 ft-lbs).
  • Don’t overtighten them. The seal makes the joint coolant-tight, not brute force.

Step 9: Reconnect the radiator hose

  • Push the lower radiator hose fully onto the housing neck by hand.
  • Use the hose-clamp pliers to return the clamp to its original position behind the raised bead.
  • Confirm the clamp sits squarely around the hose.

Step 10: Refill the cooling system

  • Confirm the radiator drain is closed and all hoses are connected.
  • Use the long-neck funnel to add the correct 50/50 premixed coolant to the cold-fill mark on the reservoir.
  • Add coolant slowly to reduce trapped air.
  • Reinstall the reservoir cap securely by hand.

Step 11: Warm the engine and purge air

  • Start the engine and let it idle with the heater set to maximum heat.
  • Watch the temperature gauge and inspect the thermostat housing and hose connections for leaks.
  • Once the engine reaches operating temperature, verify the cabin heater produces steady hot air.
  • Switch the engine off immediately if the gauge climbs toward hot, coolant leaks heavily, or the heater suddenly blows cold.

Step 12: Recheck the coolant level

  • Let the engine cool completely. This may take several hours.
  • Remove the reservoir cap by hand only when cold.
  • Use the long-neck funnel to adjust the coolant to the cold-fill mark.
  • Use the plastic trim-removal tool to reinstall the upper sight shield and its retainers.

  • ✅ Confirm the temperature gauge stabilizes in its normal operating range.
  • 🔥 Verify the heater delivers steady heat at idle and while driving.
  • 💧 Inspect the thermostat housing, lower hose, and radiator drain for fresh coolant.
  • 🧊 Recheck the reservoir level the next morning with the engine completely cold.
  • 🚫 Don’t continue driving if the temperature rises abnormally or the coolant level keeps dropping.
