The thermostat controls coolant flow between the engine and radiator. On your Edge, replacing it requires draining some coolant, removing the thermostat housing, installing the new thermostat/seal, then refilling and bleeding the cooling system.

  • โš ๏ธ Never open the coolant reservoir cap when the engine is hot. Hot coolant can spray out and cause burns.

  • ๐Ÿงค Wear gloves and safety glasses. Coolant is slippery, toxic, and harmful to pets.
  • ๐Ÿ”‹ Battery disconnect is not normally required for this thermostat replacement, but keep tools away from the battery terminals.

  • ๐Ÿงด A coolant funnel kit is a spill-control funnel that attaches to the coolant reservoir and helps remove trapped air while refilling.
  • ๐Ÿ”ง A torque wrench tightens bolts to the correct force so the plastic thermostat housing is not cracked or left loose.
  • ๐Ÿ“Œ Keep the new thermostat clean. Dirt on the seal can cause leaks.

๐Ÿ”จ Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the Engine Appearance Cover

  • Use both hands to lift the plastic engine cover straight upward from its rubber mounting points.
  • Set the cover aside where it will not be stepped on.
  • Pull evenly, not sideways.

Step 2: Remove the Air Inlet Duct for Access

  • Use an 8mm socket or flat-blade screwdriver to loosen the air duct clamp at the throttle body.
  • Use an 8mm socket or flat-blade screwdriver to loosen the clamp at the air filter box.
  • Disconnect any small breather hose from the duct by hand if it blocks removal.
  • Lift the duct out and place it aside.

Step 3: Relieve Cooling System Pressure

  • Make sure the engine is cold.
  • Slowly turn the coolant reservoir cap counterclockwise by hand.
  • If you hear pressure escaping, stop and wait until it finishes, then remove the cap fully.

Step 4: Drain Some Coolant

  • Place a 2-gallon drain pan under the radiator drain area.
  • Use a plastic trim clip remover to remove any lower splash shield clips needed for access.
  • Use your hand or a flat-blade screwdriver carefully on the radiator drain petcock if accessible, and drain about 1 gallon of coolant.
  • If the drain petcock is not easy to reach, use hose clamp pliers to loosen the lower radiator hose clamp slightly and drain coolant carefully from the hose connection.
  • Close the drain petcock or reinstall the hose and clamp securely after draining.

Step 5: Locate the Thermostat Housing

  • Follow the upper radiator hose from the radiator toward the engine.
  • The hose attaches to the thermostat housing on the engine side.
  • Use shop towels under the housing area to catch small coolant spills.

Step 6: Disconnect the Upper Radiator Hose

  • Use hose clamp pliers to squeeze the spring clamp tabs on the upper radiator hose.
  • Slide the clamp back onto the hose.
  • Twist the hose gently by hand to break it loose, then pull it off the thermostat housing.
  • If stuck, use a flat-blade screwdriver carefully between the hose and housing edge. Do not gouge the plastic housing.
  • Twist first, then pull.

Step 7: Remove the Thermostat Housing Bolts

  • Use a 10mm socket, 6-inch socket extension, and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the thermostat housing bolts.
  • Hold the housing with one hand as the last bolt comes out.
  • Pull the housing away from the engine.
  • Expect a small amount of coolant to drain out. Catch it with the drain pan and shop towels.

Step 8: Remove the Old Thermostat and Seal

  • Pull the old thermostat out by hand.
  • Remove the old seal/O-ring by hand or with a flat-blade screwdriver used very gently.
  • Do not scratch the sealing surface. A scratch can cause a coolant leak.

Step 9: Clean the Sealing Surfaces

  • Use shop towels to wipe the thermostat housing and engine sealing area clean.
  • Do not use metal scrapers on the aluminum or plastic sealing surfaces.
  • Make sure no old seal pieces remain.

Step 10: Install the New Thermostat

  • Install the new thermostat in the same orientation as the old one.
  • Install the new thermostat seal/O-ring fully into its groove by hand.
  • If the thermostat has a small jiggle valve or air bleed, position it upward when possible.
  • Match the old thermostat position.

Step 11: Reinstall the Thermostat Housing

  • Place the housing squarely against the engine by hand.
  • Start all bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a 10mm socket, 6-inch socket extension, and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to snug the bolts evenly.
  • Use an inch-pound torque wrench with a 10mm socket to tighten the thermostat housing bolts to Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).
  • Do not overtighten. The housing can crack.

Step 12: Reconnect the Upper Radiator Hose

  • Push the upper radiator hose fully onto the thermostat housing by hand.
  • Use hose clamp pliers to move the spring clamp back to its original position.
  • Make sure the clamp sits behind the raised bead on the housing neck.

Step 13: Reinstall the Air Inlet Duct

  • Place the air duct back between the air filter box and throttle body.
  • Reconnect any breather hose by hand.
  • Use an 8mm socket or flat-blade screwdriver to tighten both air duct clamps snugly.

Step 14: Refill the Cooling System

  • Install the coolant funnel kit onto the coolant reservoir.
  • Pour the correct Ford-approved prediluted coolant into the reservoir until it reaches the proper level.
  • Leave some coolant in the funnel so air bubbles can escape while the engine warms up.

Step 15: Bleed Air from the Cooling System

  • Start the engine and let it idle with the coolant funnel installed.
  • Set the cabin heat to maximum temperature and low fan speed using the climate controls.
  • Watch for bubbles in the funnel as trapped air leaves the system.
  • Let the engine warm until the upper radiator hose gets hot and the cooling fan cycles if conditions allow.
  • Add coolant as the level drops.
  • Use nitrile gloves and keep hands clear of belts and fans.

Step 16: Cap the System and Check for Leaks

  • Shut the engine off.
  • Use the stopper from the coolant funnel kit to remove the funnel without spilling coolant.
  • Install the coolant reservoir cap by hand.
  • Use a flashlight if available, or visually inspect around the thermostat housing and upper radiator hose for leaks.
  • If you removed a splash shield, reinstall it using the plastic trim clip remover.

Step 17: Reinstall the Engine Cover

  • Line up the engine cover with the rubber mounting points.
  • Press straight down by hand until it seats firmly.

  • โœ… Test drive your Edge for 10-15 minutes while watching the temperature gauge.
  • ๐ŸŒก๏ธ The temperature should rise normally and stay steady near the middle of the gauge.
  • ๐Ÿ”ฅ Confirm the heater blows warm air after the engine reaches operating temperature.
  • ๐Ÿ” After the engine cools completely, recheck the coolant level in the reservoir and top off if needed.
  • ๐Ÿ’ง Recheck for leaks around the thermostat housing, upper radiator hose, and radiator drain area.
  • โš ๏ธ If the temperature rises above normal, stop driving and shut the engine off. Air may still be trapped or another cooling system fault may be present.
