📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Civic on level ground and let the engine cool for several hours.
  • Set the parking brake and place the transmission in Park.
  • Open the hood and remove the coolant reservoir cap only when the engine is cold.
  • If raising the front, use a floor jack and support the Civic with jack stands at the front pinch welds.
  • A thermostat is a spring-loaded valve that opens when the engine reaches operating temperature.
  • A torque wrench tightens bolts to an exact tightness so the aluminum housing is not cracked.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise and Secure the Front

  • Use the floor jack rated 2-ton minimum to lift the front of your Civic high enough to access the lower engine area.
  • Place jack stands rated 2-ton minimum under the front pinch welds.
  • Gently lower the Civic onto the stands and shake the vehicle lightly to confirm it is stable.
  • Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.

Step 2: Remove the Lower Splash Shield

  • Use the plastic trim clip remover to remove the plastic clips from the lower splash shield.
  • Use the 10mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove any 10mm fasteners holding the shield.
  • Set the shield and clips aside in order.
  • Tip: Take a quick photo first.

Step 3: Drain Some Coolant

  • Place the drain pan 2-gallon minimum under the radiator drain area.
  • Use your hand or a flat-blade screwdriver medium to carefully open the radiator drain plug if accessible.
  • Drain about 1 gallon of coolant, or enough to lower the level below the thermostat housing.
  • Close the drain plug by hand until snug. Do not overtighten plastic drain parts.
  • If the drain plug is not easily accessible, leave it alone and expect more coolant to spill when the hose is removed.

Step 4: Locate the Thermostat Housing

  • Follow the lower radiator hose from the radiator toward the engine.
  • The hose connects to the thermostat housing on the engine side.
  • Use shop towels around the area to catch leftover coolant.

Step 5: Remove the Lower Radiator Hose

  • Use hose clamp pliers to squeeze the spring clamp on the lower radiator hose.
  • Slide the clamp back onto the hose, away from the thermostat housing neck.
  • Twist the hose gently by hand to break it loose.
  • If stuck, use a flat-blade screwdriver medium carefully between the hose and housing to loosen the seal. Do not gouge the aluminum.
  • Pull the hose off and aim it into the drain pan 2-gallon minimum.

Step 6: Remove the Thermostat Housing

  • Use the 12mm socket, 3/8-inch extension 6-inch, and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the thermostat housing bolts.
  • Hold the housing as the last bolt comes out so it does not drop.
  • Pull the thermostat housing away from the engine.
  • Note the direction of the old thermostat before removing it.
  • Tip: Match the old thermostat orientation.

Step 7: Remove the Old Thermostat and Seal

  • Pull the old thermostat out by hand.
  • Remove the old thermostat seal/O-ring by hand.
  • Use shop towels to clean coolant from the sealing surface.
  • Do not scrape aggressively. The housing and engine mating surfaces are aluminum and can be damaged.

Step 8: Install the New Thermostat

  • Install the new thermostat seal/O-ring onto the new thermostat if it is not pre-installed.
  • Place the new thermostat into the housing area in the same direction as the old one.
  • Make sure the thermostat sits flat and the seal is not twisted.
  • Tip: A twisted seal will leak.

Step 9: Reinstall the Thermostat Housing

  • Position the thermostat housing squarely against the engine.
  • Start all bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use the 12mm socket, 3/8-inch extension 6-inch, and torque wrench 5-50 Nm to tighten the housing bolts evenly.
  • Torque to 12 Nm (9 ft-lbs).
  • Do not overtighten. The housing bolts thread into aluminum.

Step 10: Reinstall the Lower Radiator Hose

  • Push the lower radiator hose fully onto the thermostat housing neck by hand.
  • Use hose clamp pliers to move the spring clamp back to its original position.
  • Make sure the clamp sits behind the raised bead on the housing neck.

Step 11: Refill the Cooling System

  • Confirm the radiator drain plug is closed.
  • Use the funnel with narrow spout to fill the radiator or pressurized fill point with Honda-compatible blue premixed coolant.
  • Fill slowly to reduce trapped air.
  • Fill the coolant reservoir to the MAX mark.

Step 12: Bleed Air From the Cooling System

  • Leave the coolant cap off while the engine is still cold.
  • Start the engine and set the heater to full hot with the fan on low.
  • Watch the coolant level and add Honda-compatible blue premixed coolant as the level drops.
  • Let the engine idle until the upper radiator hose becomes hot and the radiator fan cycles on.
  • Use shop towels to wipe any spilled coolant.
  • Install the coolant cap once air bubbles stop and the level stabilizes.

Step 13: Reinstall the Lower Splash Shield

  • Use the plastic trim clip remover to position the clips back into the splash shield.
  • Use the 10mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to reinstall any 10mm fasteners.
  • Tighten the 10mm fasteners snugly by hand. Do not strip the plastic retainers.

Step 14: Lower the Vehicle

  • Use the floor jack rated 2-ton minimum to lift the Civic slightly off the jack stands.
  • Remove the jack stands rated 2-ton minimum.
  • Lower the Civic slowly to the ground.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Let the engine cool completely, then recheck the coolant level in the reservoir.
  • ✅ Top off with Honda-compatible blue premixed coolant if the level drops.
  • ✅ Check around the thermostat housing and lower radiator hose for leaks.
  • ✅ Take a short test drive while watching the temperature gauge.
  • ✅ After the test drive, let the engine cool again and recheck for leaks.
  • ✅ Dispose of old coolant properly. Do not pour it on the ground or into drains.
