🔧 Escape - Thermostat Replacement

Replace the thermostat and water-outlet housing as one assembly. It sits low on the front of the engine and connects to the lower radiator and heater hoses. Access is tight, but this is manageable with small 1/4-inch-drive tools.

I’d choose the complete thermostat-and-outlet assembly shown in the parts sidebar rather than transferring an old thermostat into a separate housing. One job, one fresh seal. Nobody enjoys draining coolant twice.

  • ⚠️ Let the engine become completely cold before opening the coolant reservoir.
  • 🧤 Wear gloves and safety glasses. Coolant is poisonous and must be kept away from children and animals.
  • 🚫 Never work beneath your Escape while it’s supported only by a jack.
  • 🧯 Clean spilled coolant immediately because it’s slippery.

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park on level ground, select Park and apply the parking brake.
  • 🛞 Place wheel chocks behind both rear wheels.
  • ❄️ Allow the engine to cool for several hours, preferably overnight.
  • 🧊 Verify the replacement assembly includes its sealing gasket or O-ring.
  • 📱 Take a picture of the hose and clamp positions before disassembly.
  • 🧽 Clean dirt from around the housing so it cannot enter the cooling system.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise and secure the front

  • Use the floor jack rated 2-ton minimum at the approved front lifting point.
  • Lower your Escape securely onto the jack stands rated 2-ton minimum.
  • Give the vehicle a gentle stability check before reaching underneath.

Step 2: Relieve residual pressure

  • Put on the safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
  • Cover the cold coolant reservoir cap with a shop towel.
  • Turn the cap slowly to its first stop. Pause if you hear pressure escaping.
  • Remove the cap only after all pressure is gone.

Step 3: Drain the coolant

  • Position the 10-quart drain pan beneath the lower radiator-hose area.
  • Use the hose-clamp pliers to compress the lower hose clamp and slide it rearward.
  • Twist the hose gently to break its seal, then pull it from the connection.
  • Let the coolant drain completely into the pan.
  • Twisting first saves hoses and knuckles.

Step 4: Locate the thermostat housing

  • Follow the lower radiator hose toward the engine. It ends at the thermostat and water-outlet housing.
  • Use the 1/4-inch-drive ratchet, appropriate 8mm or 10mm socket and extensions to move any small bracket that blocks straight access.
  • Keep every removed bolt with its bracket so the positions don’t get mixed up.

Step 5: Disconnect the housing hoses

  • Use the hose-clamp pliers to release the lower radiator-hose clamp.
  • Release the heater-hose clamp the same way.
  • Use the 90-degree pick tool only between the hose and fitting to loosen the seal. Don’t stab or stretch the hose.
  • Pull both hoses from the thermostat housing.
  • Inspect the hose ends for swelling, cracks or hardened rubber.

Step 6: Remove the thermostat assembly

  • Use the 1/4-inch-drive ratchet, 8mm socket, extensions and universal joint to remove the three housing bolts.
  • Support the housing while removing the final bolt.
  • Pull the complete thermostat and housing assembly away from the engine.
  • Remove and discard the old gasket or O-ring.

Step 7: Clean the sealing surface

  • Use the plastic gasket scraper to remove old gasket material from the engine surface.
  • Wipe the surface clean without allowing debris into the coolant passage.
  • Don’t use aggressive sandpaper or a metal scraper on the aluminum surface.

Step 8: Install the new assembly

  • Confirm the new housing’s hose outlets point in the same directions as the old part.
  • Install the new gasket or O-ring in its proper groove.
  • Place the housing squarely against the engine without pinching the seal.
  • Start all three bolts by hand for several turns.
  • Use the inch-pound torque wrench and correct socket to tighten the bolts evenly to 10 Nm (89 lb-in). charm.li)
  • Don’t overtighten them. The housing and aluminum threads can be damaged easily.

Step 9: Reconnect the hoses

  • Push each hose completely over its housing connection.
  • Use the hose-clamp pliers to return each clamp to its original position behind the raised fitting bead.
  • Reinstall any bracket using the 1/4-inch-drive ratchet and the socket used during removal.
  • Check that no hose is twisted, kinked or touching the accessory belt.

Step 10: Refill the cooling system

  • Reconnect the lower radiator hose if it was used as the drain point.
  • Use the funnel with flexible spout to add compatible 50/50 premixed coolant slowly through the reservoir.
  • Pause periodically so trapped air can rise.
  • Fill only to the cold MAX mark.

Step 11: Bleed trapped air

  • Leave the reservoir cap off and start the engine.
  • Set the cabin temperature to full hot and the blower to low.
  • Watch the coolant level and add premixed coolant when it drops.
  • Allow the engine to warm until the upper radiator hose becomes hot and cabin heat remains steady.
  • Briefly raise engine speed to approximately 2,000 rpm several times.
  • Shut the engine off if the temperature warning appears or coolant starts surging from the reservoir.

Step 12: Seal and inspect the system

  • Once bubbles stop appearing, install the reservoir cap securely by hand.
  • Use the flashlight to inspect the housing seam and both hose connections for leaks.
  • Shut the engine off and allow it to become completely cold.
  • Use the funnel with flexible spout to correct the cold level to the MAX mark.
