🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the Lower Engine Cover
- Use a 10mm socket and ratchet wrench 3/8-inch drive to remove the lower engine cover fasteners if equipped.
- Use a plastic trim clip remover to release any plastic clips without breaking them.
- Set the cover and fasteners aside in order.
- Tip: Take a photo first.
Step 2: Remove the Coolant Reservoir Cap
- Make sure the engine is fully cool.
- Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
- Slowly loosen the coolant reservoir cap by hand to release any leftover pressure.
- Remove the cap and set it somewhere clean.
Step 3: Drain Some Coolant
- Place the drain pan 2-gallon minimum under the radiator drain area.
- Use a flathead screwdriver 1/4-inch tip or your fingers to carefully open the radiator drain cock if accessible.
- Drain about 1 gallon of coolant, or enough so the thermostat housing area will not spill heavily when opened.
- Close the radiator drain cock snugly by hand or with the flathead screwdriver 1/4-inch tip. Do not overtighten it.
- Tip: Keep coolant clean if reusing.
Step 4: Locate the Thermostat Housing
- Follow the lower radiator hose to the engine. The hose connects to the thermostat housing.
- The thermostat housing is the metal or plastic outlet held to the engine with bolts.
- Use shop towels around the area to catch small coolant drips.
Step 5: Remove the Lower Radiator Hose from the Housing
- Use hose clamp pliers to squeeze the spring clamp on the lower radiator hose.
- Slide the clamp back on the hose.
- Twist the hose gently by hand to break it loose, then pull it off the thermostat housing.
- If the hose is stuck, use a flathead screwdriver 1/4-inch tip carefully at the hose edge only. Do not gouge the housing.
- Tip: Twist first, then pull.
Step 6: Remove the Thermostat Housing
- Use a 10mm socket, 3/8-inch drive extension 6-inch, and ratchet wrench 3/8-inch drive to remove the thermostat housing bolts.
- Some fasteners or nearby brackets may require a 12mm socket for access.
- Pull the thermostat housing straight away from the engine.
- Expect some coolant to spill into the drain pan 2-gallon minimum.
Step 7: Remove the Old Thermostat and Seal
- Pull the old thermostat out by hand.
- Remove the old thermostat seal or O-ring by hand.
- Use shop towels to wipe the sealing surfaces clean.
- Do not scrape aggressively with metal tools. Scratches can cause leaks.
Step 8: Install the New Thermostat
- Install the new thermostat seal or O-ring onto the new engine coolant thermostat.
- Insert the thermostat into the engine in the same direction as the old one.
- If the thermostat has a small jiggle valve or air bleed, position it at the top.
- A jiggle valve is a tiny loose pin that lets trapped air pass through the thermostat.
- Tip: Match the old thermostat orientation.
Step 9: Reinstall the Thermostat Housing
- Place the thermostat housing squarely against the engine by hand.
- Start all bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Use a 10mm socket, 3/8-inch drive extension 6-inch, and ratchet wrench 3/8-inch drive to snug the bolts evenly.
- Use a torque wrench 3/8-inch drive inch-pound to tighten the thermostat housing bolts to Torque to 9 Nm (80 in-lbs).
- If any removed bracket fasteners used the 12mm socket, reinstall them and tighten snugly unless a specific bracket torque is provided with the part.
Step 10: Reconnect the Lower Radiator Hose
- Push the lower radiator hose fully onto the thermostat housing by hand.
- Use hose clamp pliers to move the spring clamp back to its original position.
- Make sure the clamp sits behind the raised lip on the housing.
- Wipe the area dry with shop towels so leaks are easy to spot later.
Step 11: Refill the Cooling System
- Install the funnel spill-free coolant fill kit on the coolant fill point.
- Pour Toyota-compatible pink Super Long Life coolant 50/50 premix slowly into the funnel.
- Fill until the level stabilizes.
- Squeeze the upper and lower radiator hoses gently by hand to help move trapped air.
Step 12: Bleed Air from the Cooling System
- Leave the funnel spill-free coolant fill kit installed.
- Start the engine and set the cabin heat to maximum temperature with low fan speed.
- Let the engine idle while watching the coolant level in the funnel.
- Add Toyota-compatible pink Super Long Life coolant 50/50 premix as the level drops.
- When the thermostat opens, the coolant level may drop suddenly and the lower radiator hose will become warm.
- Watch for bubbles. When bubbling mostly stops and heat blows warm from the vents, air is mostly purged.
- Do not leave the vehicle unattended while running.
Step 13: Check for Leaks and Set Coolant Level
- Turn the engine off.
- Use safety glasses and keep hands away from hot fans and belts.
- Inspect the thermostat housing and hose connection with a light and shop towels.
- Remove the funnel spill-free coolant fill kit according to the funnel instructions.
- Install the coolant reservoir cap by hand.
- Set the coolant level in the reservoir to the FULL mark once the engine cools.
Step 14: Reinstall the Lower Engine Cover
- Position the lower engine cover under your Corolla.
- Install any plastic clips by hand.
- Use a 10mm socket and ratchet wrench 3/8-inch drive to reinstall the fasteners.
- Tighten them snugly. Do not overtighten plastic cover hardware.
