Replacing the starter motor on your CX-5 means removing the failed electric motor that cranks the engine, then installing a new one in the same position. On the 2.5L turbo engine, the starter is mounted low on the engine/transmission area, so safe lifting and battery disconnection are important.

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park your CX-5 on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • 🧱 Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels before lifting the front.
  • 🔋 Open the hood and disconnect the negative battery cable with a 10mm socket. The negative cable is the black cable marked “−”.
  • ⏱️ Wait at least 3 minutes after disconnecting the battery before working near electrical connectors.
  • 💡 A universal joint is a small swiveling socket adapter that helps reach bolts at an angle.
  • 💡 Dielectric grease is a non-conductive grease used to protect electrical connector seals from moisture.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Disconnect the Battery

  • Use a 10mm socket to loosen the negative battery terminal clamp.
  • Lift the negative cable off the battery post and tuck it aside so it cannot spring back.
  • Do not remove the positive cable unless needed for access.
  • Always disconnect negative first.

Step 2: Raise and Support the Front

  • Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • Use a floor jack rated 3-ton minimum at the front center jacking point.
  • Raise the front of your CX-5 high enough to work safely underneath.
  • Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the front side support points.
  • Gently lower the vehicle onto the jack stands and shake the vehicle lightly to confirm it is stable.

Step 3: Remove the Lower Splash Shield

  • Put on safety glasses before working underneath.
  • Use a trim clip removal tool to remove the plastic push clips from the lower splash shield.
  • Use a 10mm socket to remove the small splash shield bolts.
  • Lower the splash shield and set it aside.
  • Keep clips grouped by location.

Step 4: Locate the Starter Motor

  • Use a work light to look at the lower engine/transmission area.
  • The starter is a short cylindrical motor mounted to the transmission bellhousing near the engine.
  • Identify the large battery cable on the starter solenoid and the smaller control wire connector.
  • The solenoid is the smaller cylinder attached to the starter; it switches battery power to the starter motor.

Step 5: Remove the Starter Electrical Connections

  • Use a flat-blade screwdriver to gently release the locking tab on the small starter control connector.
  • Pull the small connector straight off by the connector body, not by the wire.
  • Use a 12mm socket or 12mm wrench to remove the nut holding the large battery cable to the starter solenoid.
  • Move the large battery cable away from the starter.
  • Torque on installation: starter battery cable nut to 9-12 Nm (80-106 in-lbs)

Step 6: Remove the Starter Mounting Bolts

  • Support the starter with one hand so it does not drop when the bolts come out.
  • Use a 14mm socket, 3/8-inch ratchet, 3/8-inch extension set, and 3/8-inch universal joint to loosen the starter mounting bolts.
  • Remove the lower starter bolt first, then remove the upper starter bolt.
  • If access is tight, use a 14mm socket with a shorter extension to change the angle.
  • Torque on installation: starter mounting bolts to 38-51 Nm (28-38 ft-lbs)

Step 7: Remove the Old Starter

  • Carefully slide the starter straight out of the transmission bellhousing.
  • Rotate the starter as needed to clear nearby brackets and wiring.
  • Do not force it against the wiring harness or coolant hoses.
  • Compare the old starter to the new starter before installation.
  • Match the nose shape carefully.

Step 8: Install the New Starter

  • Guide the new starter into position by hand.
  • Start both mounting bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a 14mm socket, 3/8-inch extension set, and 3/8-inch ratchet to snug the mounting bolts.
  • Use a torque wrench rated 10-100 Nm with a 14mm socket to tighten the mounting bolts.
  • Torque to 38-51 Nm (28-38 ft-lbs)

Step 9: Reconnect the Starter Wiring

  • Apply a small amount of dielectric grease to the seal area of the small control connector only.
  • Push the small control connector onto the starter until it clicks.
  • Install the large battery cable onto the starter solenoid stud.
  • Use a 12mm socket and torque wrench rated 10-100 Nm to tighten the battery cable nut.
  • Torque to 9-12 Nm (80-106 in-lbs)
  • Make sure the rubber protective boot fully covers the positive cable connection.

Step 10: Reinstall the Lower Splash Shield

  • Lift the splash shield into place by hand.
  • Install the plastic clips with your fingers, then seat them with a trim clip removal tool if needed.
  • Use a 10mm socket to reinstall the splash shield bolts.
  • Torque small splash shield bolts snug only, about 5-8 Nm (44-71 in-lbs)

Step 11: Lower the Vehicle

  • Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to raise the front slightly off the jack stands.
  • Remove the jack stands rated 3-ton minimum.
  • Lower your CX-5 slowly to the ground.
  • Remove the wheel chocks.

Step 12: Reconnect the Battery

  • Place the negative battery cable back onto the battery post.
  • Use a 10mm socket to tighten the terminal clamp.
  • Torque to 4-6 Nm (35-53 in-lbs)
  • Apply battery terminal protector spray after tightening the terminal.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Start your CX-5. The engine should crank strongly and start without grinding, clicking, or delay.
  • ✅ Turn the engine off and restart it 2-3 times to confirm the starter works consistently.
  • ✅ Check that the battery warning light turns off after startup.
  • ✅ Recheck around the starter area for loose wires, missing clips, or the positive cable boot being out of place.
  • ✅ After battery disconnection, reset the clock and any one-touch window functions if needed.
  • ✅ If the engine still only clicks, test the battery condition and starter relay circuit before replacing more parts.
