🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Disconnect battery power
- Use the 10mm wrench to remove the negative battery cable from the battery.
- Isolate the cable so it cannot spring back and touch the terminal.
Step 2: Raise and secure the truck
- Use the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift the front end.
- Set the truck on jack stands (rated for truck weight).
- Remove the wheel chocks only after the truck is secure.
Step 3: Remove access components
- Use the 15mm socket and ratchet if the lower splash shield or wheelhouse liner needs to come down for access.
- If equipped, remove the small starter heat shield fasteners with the 13mm socket.
Step 4: Disconnect the starter wiring
- Use the 13mm socket to remove the battery cable nut from the starter terminal.
- Remove the small control wire from the solenoid terminal.
- Move both wires aside so they cannot snag during removal.
- Tip: Do not pull on the wire itself.
Step 5: Remove the starter motor
- Use the 15mm socket, ratchet, and short extension to remove the two starter mounting bolts.
- Support the starter with one hand while removing the last bolt.
- Lower the starter out of the bellhousing area.
Step 6: Install the new starter motor
- Position the new starter in place by hand.
- Install the mounting bolts finger-tight first with the 15mm socket.
- Torque the starter mounting bolts to 50 Nm (37 ft-lbs).
Step 7: Reconnect the starter wiring
- Reconnect the control wire to the solenoid terminal.
- Install the battery cable and tighten the nut with the 13mm socket.
- Torque the starter electrical nut to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).
Step 8: Reinstall shields and lower the truck
- Reinstall any heat shields or splash shields using the 13mm socket or 15mm socket.
- Lower the truck carefully with the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum).
- Reconnect the negative battery cable with the 10mm wrench.

- Start the engine and listen for smooth cranking.
- Check for warning lights on the dash.
- If the starter clicks but does not crank, recheck battery cable tightness and starter wiring.
- Make sure there are no loose tools or shield fasteners left underneath.
