Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Disconnect the Battery
- Use a 10mm socket to loosen the negative battery terminal clamp.
- Lift the negative cable off the battery post. If it is stuck, use a battery terminal puller.
- Move the cable aside so it cannot spring back and touch the battery post.
- Use a 10mm socket to loosen and remove the positive battery terminal if more room is needed.
- Negative cable comes off first.
Step 2: Remove the Engine Cover and Intake Duct
- Use your hands to lift the plastic engine cover straight upward if fitted.
- Use a flat-head screwdriver to loosen the hose clamp at the air intake duct.
- Use a trim clip removal tool to remove any plastic clips holding the intake snorkel.

- Lift the intake ducting out of the way to access the starter area near the transmission bellhousing.
- The bellhousing is the front section of the transmission case where it bolts to the engine.
Step 3: Locate the Starter Motor
- Stand at the front of your Forester and look toward the rear of the engine bay, where the engine meets the transmission.
- The starter is a small cylindrical motor mounted to the transmission bellhousing with two main mounting bolts.
- Use a flashlight if needed to identify the thick battery cable and smaller control wire on the starter solenoid.
- The solenoid is the smaller round section attached to the starter that switches battery power to the motor.
Step 4: Raise the Front If More Access Is Needed
- Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
- Use a floor jack rated 2-ton minimum at the front center jacking point.
- Support the vehicle with jack stands rated 2-ton minimum under the proper front support points.
- Gently lower the vehicle onto the jack stands and shake the vehicle lightly to confirm it is stable.
- Wear safety glasses before looking or reaching underneath.
Step 5: Disconnect the Starter Wiring
- Confirm the negative battery cable is still disconnected before touching the starter wiring.
- Use a 12mm socket to remove the nut holding the large battery cable to the starter solenoid.
- Pull the large cable straight off the stud and move it aside.
- Use your fingers or a flat-head screwdriver gently to release the lock tab on the small starter control connector.
- Pull the small connector straight off. Do not pull on the wire itself.
- Take a photo before removal.
Step 6: Remove the Starter Mounting Bolts
- Use a 14mm socket, 3/8-inch drive ratchet, and 3/8-inch drive 6-inch extension to loosen the upper starter mounting bolt.
- Use a 14mm socket with a 3/8-inch drive universal joint if the angle is tight.
- Use a 14mm socket to loosen the lower starter mounting bolt.
- Support the starter with one hand while removing the last bolt so it does not drop.
- Remove the starter motor from the bellhousing.
Step 7: Compare the Old and New Starter
- Place both starters side by side on a clean surface.
- Check that the mounting ears, gear position, electrical terminals, and connector shape match.
- Use a flat-head screwdriver to carefully transfer any small protective cover or bracket only if the replacement starter requires it.
- Do not force a starter that does not sit flat against the mounting surface.
Step 8: Install the New Starter
- Position the new starter against the transmission bellhousing by hand.
- Start both mounting bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Use a 14mm socket, 3/8-inch drive ratchet, and 3/8-inch drive 6-inch extension to snug both mounting bolts evenly.
- Use a torque wrench 10-80 Nm range and 14mm socket to tighten the starter mounting bolts to Torque to 50 Nm (37 ft-lbs).
- Start bolts by hand first.
Step 9: Reconnect the Starter Wiring
- Push the small starter control connector onto the solenoid until it clicks.
- Apply a small amount of dielectric grease around the connector seal if desired. Dielectric grease helps keep moisture out of electrical connectors.
- Install the large battery cable onto the starter solenoid stud.
- Use a 12mm socket to install the starter cable nut.
- Use a torque wrench 10-80 Nm range and 12mm socket to tighten the starter cable nut to Torque to 9 Nm (80 in-lbs).
- Make sure the cable does not touch metal brackets or moving parts.
Step 10: Reinstall the Intake Duct and Engine Cover
- Set the intake duct back into position.
- Use a flat-head screwdriver to tighten the intake hose clamp until snug.
- Use a trim clip removal tool or your fingers to reinstall the plastic clips.
- Use needle-nose pliers to reinstall any small hose clamps.
- Push the engine cover back down by hand until it seats on its mounting points.
Step 11: Lower the Vehicle
- Use the floor jack rated 2-ton minimum to lift the front slightly off the jack stands.
- Remove the jack stands rated 2-ton minimum.
- Lower your Forester slowly to the ground with the floor jack.
- Remove the wheel chocks.
Step 12: Reconnect the Battery
- Install the positive battery terminal first if it was removed.
- Use a 10mm socket to tighten the positive terminal clamp to Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).
- Install the negative battery terminal last.
- Use a 10mm socket to tighten the negative terminal clamp to Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).
- Do not over-tighten the clamps. They can crack.
